Nintendo won't call a gun a gun photo

As much as Nintendo has changed and warped since the success of the Wii, it's nice to know that the company hasn't abandoned all of its old sensibilities. Like its complete fear of violence and love of bizarre censorship. Did you know that plastic gun peripherals for the Wii aren't allowed to be called guns? This is by royal decree of Nintendo, and even evil publisher Activision has to obey.

Activision's Jeff Muench told Game Informer how a series of "obscure Nintendo regulations" affected the gun peripherals for Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010. They look like shotguns (albeit citrus-flavored ones), but boy, they ain't shotguns. Activision was forced to call them "firearms," because I guess simply uttering the word "gun" will cause all the children in the world to shoot their mothers.

Shoot and kill whatever you want, kids. Just don't say any bad words while you're doing it!

This is pathetic. Who whines about calling a peripheral a 'firearm' instead of a 'shotgun'? Would calling it a shotgun make any more blind sheep of casual consumers buy their crappy plastic not-gun?

NERF doesn't sell "guns." It sells "blasters."

Firearms. That's a little too realistic for Nintendo surely? Shouldn't it be Zappers or Zaparms, or light/sunshine/rainbow scope?

Firearm sounds worse then gun =/

Whenever I hear firearm I think of something a lot larger then a hand gun.

Crap I actually want to set my arm on fire right now. Just so I can punch someone and yell "FIREARM!"

The most bizarre dodge of the word "gun" still has to go to Sega, who called the Genesis light gun "The Menacer".

It's not surprising they want to dodge the word gun but firearm is an odd alternative.

We should make it into a game where everyone takes turns lighting their arm and fire and writing notes to Nintendo on why censoring doesn't work when you take a word that sounds pretty boring and replace it with something as badass as FIREARM!

That's not a dodge on Sega's part, for them in the attitude full megadrive/genesis days gun was not menacing enough.

In my head I now hear the voice of a fighting game character's move being spamed over and over. FI-YA..AAAARMM, FI-YA..AAAARMM, FI-YA..AAAARMM.

@Nicojay: Obviously, you hear Captain Falcon doing it, no doubt. After all, Falcon Punch does involve a flaming arm...

I don't get it- they are talking about a game where you go out in the world and score points by not shooting alien threats or armed enemy soldiers, but defenseless animals for sport and somehow it is bad to call it a "gun". I guess it is time for me to put out a wife beating game that works with the baseball bat peripheral, it is about as wholesome a game as any of the cabela games.

So a wild beast is the same as a human being? Is that what your saying?

Listen, when deer, bears and boars can start making a game where they hunt humans, I will call them equals.

********************************************

Anyways, in regards to this being a "firearm" rather then "gun", many companies have this policy. I use to help manage a laser-tag (Q-Zar) joint in the late 90s and we had to call them "phasers" and not guns, for probably the same reason Nintendo is using.

We all know there are crazy religious zealots and other unhinged people out there. Simply removing the term gun can help negate their complaints. I am sure Nintendo has had enough crap from them as well.

Nintendo is ridiculous. They'll allow games like Chinatown Wars on the DS, but won't allow Activision to say gun? Anyone who is against video game violence knows about GTA, and I doubt that they are worried about what they decide to call a GUN on the box of Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2010. I thought Nintendo had given this shit up years ago, apparently not. Nintendo, grow up.

Negative connotations with "gun" eh?
At least they weren't forced to call them "BIG ORANGE ZAPPER OF DEATH" but that actually might have been cooler.

Technically it isn't a gun... a gun is a term reserved for cannons, artillery pieces and the like.

This is nothing new, after all even the first incarnation of the nintendo lightgun was referred to as a light "blaster"

Good Job Nintendo...anything that pisses activision off is ok by me...since i read that article about how the guy from Activision would raise the price of games if he could. And is a corporate money whore. \ I dont mind anything thats thrown in activsions way that leaves a bad taste in their mouth....I dont like boycotts....but if one started over the greed of Activision i would surely join..

Well technically if you call anything less than a canon a gun, you're bound to get a few disapproving looks from soldiers. Anything else is "The Weapon", or Rifle.
