Nintendo will now offer replacement Wii Speak codes photo

I don't know if you heard earlier, but it was first said that Wii Speak units came with a one-time activation code linked to that unit, for use with the Wii Speak Channel software download. This means that only those that first purchase it can use it fully, making used units useless.

This brought about several questions. What happens if you lose your number? Or what happens if you acquire a new or replacement Wii console?

GamesIndustry tells us that Nintendo will now offer a replacement code for those situations. Unfortunately, there's still no word on if they'll offer codes for a second-hand Wii Speak unit.

From Nintendo:

"Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number."

"Following a Wii exchange"? Could that also include second-hand stuff? Hm. I would hazard a yes, but maybe?

So let me get this straight, I'll overpay for a Wii to play crappy games with a gimmick controller in addition to being bound to a Wii speak code that renders the value of my Wii speak device worthless if I decide I don't like it. Good thing I won't spend more than $129 on a Wii.

Sorry ender_x, but your comment added nothing whatsoever of value to the conversation other than flamebaiting.

On another note: I still think nintendo are money grubbing bastards for having this code system in the first smegging place.

Wow so once again everyone freaked out over nothing. Oh well either way it was no big deal in the first place, but its good to see that Nintendo is doing the right thing by offer new codes to though people who would need one.

"This means that only those that first purchase it can use it fully, *making used units useless*."

I still have problems with the misconception (marked with asterisks) above. Wii Speak Channel isn't required for in-game voice chat on Wii, but it does give you the option to sit around and chat when not actually playing a game.

Is Wii Speak "useless", as described above and in countless other articles, if it is only being used for in-game voice chat? No. More to the point, how many gamers will leave their Wii turned on with the chat channel loaded just in case someone comes to talk to them? None.

Hmm... seems like the whole issue was much ado about nothing, if you ask me. Of course, that won't stop the haters and fanboys. :)

@VaeVictus: You didn't have it straight, although given your apparent anti-Wii bias that's no surprise. And before getting sarcastic about "valuable input" from others, try posting something of worth (ie: not flamebait) next time.

@VaeVictus

The article is about the Wii Speak microphone. If you want to bash the Wii console itself without backing up any of your claims then do it in a blog or something.

As for the article itself, it's still crap that you need a code at all. The channel is pointless enough as it is... Why complicate things with a 16-digit code? Just do away with it completely and then Nintendo won't have to worry about giving replacements.
