Nintendo: Wii is in 'unhealthy condition' in Japan photo

While Nintendo is still turning a profit and literally eating Fabergé eggs for breakfast, the Kyoto firm has admitted that the Wii is not doing so well in Japan right now. With sales hovering around the 20,000 mark for six weeks, sometimes dipping close to 15,000, Nintendo has labeled the console's status as "unhealthy."

"The Wii is in the most unhealthy condition since it hit the Japanese market," conceded Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. It might have something to with everybody in the world owning one already. Despite the sales dip, Iwata remains firm that a price cut just isn't going to happen.

"A price cut in a difficult economy cannot really excite the market and drive up sales," he explains. "As of now I really don't think that a price cut is a good option for us."

While this isn't the end of the all-powerful Wii, the sales did have to slow down some time. We live in a very faddy world full of Magpie-like people who get distracted easily, and the Wii had a better innings than it could reasonably have expected from a species that will obsess over Furbies for a straight eight weeks, then forget they ever existed.

At least Nintendo can always count on the support of its cherished hardcore gamers should the dark times ever return. Oh ... wait.

It's kinda difficult to sell a product like that when EVERYONE HAS ONE.

Hah! those people need some investigation. Charging $250 for something that costs $140 to make screams "crook". Especially in the UK market. Some of us in the US have a hard time buying food at the grocery store, let alone being gouged for obsolete hardware. FTC, where are you?!

Drach, what kind of world do you live in? Everything, and I mean everything is marked up from cost. That's the whole concept of PROFIT. Very few industries can afford to sell a product at a loss knowing that they're receiving the majority of their money in the licensing for said product. But everything from Air Conditioners to food, is sold for more than it costs to make.

Around 8 million Wii's have been sold in Japan. Both the PS2 and the DS sit will above the 20+ million mark. There are 120+ million people in Japan.

No, not everyone has one.

I think this goes beyond market saturation and represents the massive, glaring flaw with Nintendos plan for the Wii. It's hard to speak about without being aware of the sales for 360/PS3 but it goes to the core of the console-focused plan. The reason Nintendo can't boost sales with a price cut is because they have to keep making money on console sales, it's as simple as that. Even with the previously reported decrease in manufacturing costs, they still need to be making big profits on each console because their attach rate is so piss-weak. It's the only way i can make sense of the failure to implement a price cut and the price increase in the UK.

megaStryke: Yeah, but is there a Wii revision on the market? People gobbled up the DSLite and DSi because they were 'new' even though it was a minor revision and something they already owned. Probably the same with the PS2, though it's the oldest system on the market right now.

Or maybe people are doing like Nintendo intended and are getting together to play games at someone's place, just they're not buying their own console. =P

@ Junglistgamer and anyone else who is interested

I found this:

Full list for the week ending March 29‭ ‬according to Media Create:

DSi/ 57,401
PSP/ 54,148
PS3/ 22,825
Wii/ 17,276
DSL/ 8,408
PS2/ 5,246
360/ 4,849

Its from edge-online.com don't know if its a reliable source, but it these numbers seem to fit into what has been said. If things keep going this way, nintendo can put out another console with in a year or so and most likely regain there foothold. But then again this could just be because of the economic crisis (don't know if its effects Japan or not) and therefore everyone's sales will be dropping, its just a matter of time.

All my friends sold their Wiis.

I like my system, but watching Nintendo collapse would be a lot more satisfying. They deserve plenty of it.

@Drach: The difference is that people require food to survive. The Wii is *incredibly* superfluous purchase. I don't think the FTC needs to step in an let a company know that it should be making less profit on their luxury product.

I live in a place where it's possible to get things at cost. I didn't pay full price for my wii because I hunt for bargains and was paitent enough to not buy when it was new. I didn't spend $200-$300 for the touch I'm using. It's a matter of being paitent and striking when the iron is hot. People learn these things when they become adults, and have to pay for things themselves. A $199 wii would still spell profit for nintendo. Were talking about obsolete hardware. Not state of the art stuff. This console was dated when designed and yet we still are paying over what a more powerful system costs.

I suppose you don't remember getting ripped off by nintendo... But I do. And I call foul.

I agree that Nintendo needs a slice of the Humble Pie. They've alienated both developers and their original fanbase. You know, the ones that paid 70$ for a copy of n64 Zelda and continued to purchase Gamecube games and accessories long after it became clear that Xbox and PS2 were the way to go. I've shed my last tear for you, Nintendo.

I loved my Gamecube, it was my favorite console of its generation, with the most consistently high quality and enjoyable games. What the hell is wrong with you people? You get some sort of emotional connection to these companies as if they owe you something for spending 200 fucking dollars on their console 5 years ago.

Grow the fuck up. I have spent thousands at Walmart and they don't owe me anything. You paid for a product. Nintendo isn't required to take you out to lunch or snuggle with you after sex.

Edge are a pretty well-respected source so those figures are probably accurate to at least a reasonable degree. Talking about longevity, over 5000 PS2 sales is pretty damn good for such an old console. Personally I think if Nintendo want to stay in the console market they can do, but it'll take a new piece of hardware within the next couple of years. Bundle up wii motion plus with a console of broadly equal power to the 360 and make the software balance between casual and hardcore closer to that of the DS and you'd have a fantastic formula. The problem isn't attracting non-gamers, it's completely shirking the core demographic that's fucked over the Wii in the long-term.
Drach's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/09/2009 10:25

Junglist has a fine point.

Didn't iwata tell BBC that "gamers don't know what they want"?
I'm glad I only paid 199 for my wii (new) this was before the manufacturing price dropped again. I'm not buying a dsi or ANY new nintendo produced games.

Doesn't anyone remember the FTC sueing them for price fixing? Doesn't this sound familiar? (do some reading)
That alone should make an intelligent person be cautious about their products, and even consider other sources of entertainment. Check games radar for 100 reasons to hate nintendo. (I'll post a link when I get to a PC)
Fuck it. You know what? Go ahead and use your credit card to pay for that overpriced obsolete hardware. I'm just happy I was smart (cheap) enough to get one at about cost.

"Charging $250 for something that costs $140 to make screams "crook"."

Do you know how much most electronics cost to make? Its a faction of what they charge for them. Its called a business, which is suppose to make money, not loose it. Apple iPods certainly don't cost what they charge for them, but no one ever accuses Apple of charging to much, and they put out a new model every year for people to buy. Would a price drop be great? Sure it would, but until Nintendo has to drop it, there not going to.

Is everyone forgetting that the Wii is selling faster than the other two major consoles combined in the rest of the world? Slacking in a single region, even a big one like Japan, is nothing more than a minor inconvenience at best for the company.

I know so many X-Nintendo Fanboys who are really bitter at their lost love, and would love nothing more than to see them fail. Me, I could care less. I just wish I could go back and tell myself not to buy the damn thing in the first place.

equating furbies to the wii is out of the question Jim, at least furbie had his own language and was surgically attached to my school bag for most of my teens. Hope you were joking, cause i sure was.

On a more serious note to my fellow DTOIDers, there is nothing outdated with the Wii. Hell i still enjoy listening to cassette tapes, love music quality on radio, watch movies from the 70s and 80s, watch movies with a 100 dollar budgets not blockbusters, and mostly enjoy them more..if you cant see quality in the wii, i respect that, but i surely do.

As for the price thing, records are more expensive than CDs, VHS to DVDs, and so on, two things that come to mind, they are rare and other outdated hardware is cheap on the market, TVs etc... So i get your point, nintendo listen to us, make the wii cheaper and the games for 60 bucks...is that what you want people?

MotoRobo - so preferring a Wii in this day and age means 'irrational devotion' and fanboyism. I see youre point. My question is does this argument hold true for other mediums i mentioned such as low budget indie movies or cassette/records/radio quality music? I mean you could be right, there is a chance my habitual addiction to Nintendo products and simpler yet crooked presentations of music and movies, is as the title suggests, an 'unhealthy condition'

I was just wandering why you would reach such an unaccommodating conclusion with regards to my choice or preference? since you mostly seem reasonable and in fact post a lot of funny comments.

The Wii has been a fad. Seriously, that is what it has become. People aren't buying it because they like the games or are looking forward to the games coming out next year; these are people who buy something because it's cool, play it for a few months, and abandon it.
I'm surprised the system lasted this long, frankly. A $250 fad in a worldwide failing economy is downright hard to keep up, especially with the Wii failing to deliver to the crowd that will potentially continue to play it as the years roll along. Casual gamers most from thing to thing just as fast as the soap operas they watch. The last paragraph in this article is spot on: Nintendo has been milking their golden goose for all its worth, but when the eggs stop they won't have anyone to fall back on.
I'm ready for the Wii fad to die. Mostly because I'm so damn tired of going to in-laws and having to play that god-forsaken Wii sports over and over again. There is only so much of this I can take!

MotoRobo - Apologies for belated response, as a matter of fact i'm in sweden and have to sleep at night. Thanks for the clarifiction, i somewhat agree with the typology that the Wii is a fad among the mother/grandfather/relatives in general category and in no way would correlate the sales numbers to that of the PS2, which generally sold itself in bucket loads to its niche market of old.

However, as with the DS, which started off with nintendogs and brain age/drainage, games i never bought and probably won't ever, yet the popularity and legitimacy of the product became apparent with time over the PSP which had the whole MP3/movies thing going for it. There is always a discomfort in charting new territories, and having more individuals come aboard, but the wii, at least for me has proven its potential. I know everyone raves about madworld, but, the new experience actually came from Deadly creatures and No more Heroes over Devil may cry 4 or even Drake's fortune. These games used less "waggle' and effectively so, to provide for something new that i presume even Sony and Microsoft will be emulating shortly thereafter. The scorpion finishing moves are just overwhelming especially after fighting off 2 bugs a snail and then a giant rat.

The whole fanboy thing is spot on, as i know i will be buying the PS3 when God of War comes out, not because i do not think the system does not have great games already, but as you eloquently define fanboyism, i clearly fit that description, just in a different department, not the Wii.

The 'Armchair Philosophy' quote gave me cramps in my pelvis!

Thanks for the insights and cheers Brobo
