As most of you well know, Nintendo unleashed their Opera-powered Internet browser today to Wii owners -- for free. And, oh man, I'm glad that thing is free. So far, I couldn't play anything with flash (no YTMNDs make Summa an unhappy boy) and it was a bit laggy with getting my cursor around. Anyway, I'm sure things will be fleshed out with various updates and such. So, for now, watch as I guide you through the beginnings of the Internet Channel -- half asleep, and half a brain. Enjoy!

Remember Summa, this is Opera BETA. Full version comes out in March 2007 and you have until June 2007 to DL or you have to pay 500 points.

Other than that...I think the reviews of it are scattered, some people can do Flash/YouTube perfectly, others can't...hmmm

Wiicade.com works good, if anybody's interested.

most flash videos play perfectly - some make problems, though - but it's definitely lightyears better than the ds- or psp-browser - couldn't get my hands on a ps3-browser yet.

It's nice to watch my EBA videos on my television...

I'll give Wiicade a try.

What a crock that you have to pay for Opera. It's not like any of us paid for Firefox on our PCs. =/

Someone at the office just tried it -- seems to support some early versions of Flash. You might see some Flash banners on the web that work because designers are forced to save Version 6-7 to ensure everyone can see their ads.

I went home for lunch so that I could screw around with this. I got Flash to work on most sites I tried. Occasionally I'd have weird things happen (like being dumped back to the homepage for no apparent reason), but for the most part it worked well. It is definitely way beyond the PSP browser. The only things that didn't work was streaming WMV video and mp3 files. Anything embedded in Flash works fine though.

Summa, here's a PROTIP: Don't bother typing www...com, just type the name of the site (Destructoid). It should load right up.

I don't think you have to do anything special to get flash to work. I just went to Wiicade and it worked.

I think Flash doesn't work some places cause they use Flash 8 and Wiipera (yeah, I called it that first!) only supports Flash 7

There is clearly a lot of room for improvement, but it is off to a very good start. It will not replace my computer for browsing, but it's still pretty slick. And you cant beat free. :)

I really enjoyed Wiicade. I played some 3D pong and some sniping game (which was made better by Wiizooming!). I tried to play some Roly Poly over at Nitrome but couldn't get it working. A shame, that game owns. I'd have to say the only reason for me to use the Wii browser is when someone else is occupying the PC or I want to play flash games, or share youtube videos with the family who will watch anything on the television but quickly grow impatient when shown things on the PC.

Also, try pressing 2 for ultra text-reading zoom. It screws with images, but is great when reading online magazines and the like. Pressing 1 is an alternate way to bring up favorites as well.

Flash works, Suma.
But not the YTMND flash sadly, but other flash movies do, like those on Newgrounds.

ya know, i think YTMND isn't flash at all, its a animated GIF with a sound. when you right-click on it, you can click "save picture as", if you right-click on flash you get something else.

A wireless keyboard addition in the future would make the porn browsing alot quicker. I'd also like the word completion in the virtual keyboard to be able to learn words.

Yeah, because typing "allnaturalhairygirlongirl" over and over into your good search bar gets old!

I figured out why Summa couldn't get videos on Youtube to work. It's not a problem with Flash, it's a Javascript error. Opera on Wii doesn't fully support Javascript. Read the error message that comes up, it mentions Javascript.

Youtube videos work just fine if they're embedded on a website. A Youtube video on this site should work fine on the Wii, for example. That same video won't play on Youtube.com itself because of the Javascrip they use to embed the videos. Silly, but that's the way it is.

Anyway, there are plenty of other video sites that use Flash and Flash alone. They work well on the Wii. The only problems I'm seeing is when the video is of a decent bitrate. It struggles to play such videos. Hopefully they'll optimize it by March.

maxx77, I think it would be a combination of Javascript and an outdated version of Flash being supported. With the current official version of Flash for x86 Linux, all you get is 7 (sucks big time, but I have Mac and Windows Flash 9 here too) and certain Flash 9 things won't even work because Flash 9 allows interfacing with Javascript or some shit, while Flash 7 doesn't, so Wii Opera's Flash player may have the same exact issues as the latest official x86 Linux Flash player. Thankfully Flash 9 Linux is coming some time next year, so Adobe isn't just abandoning non-proprietary OS users.

That could be. All I know for sure is Youtube vids don't work on their site, but they're ok when embedded elsewhere. You hear that D-toid? Keep embedding videos!

Flash worked the first time. Now it goes back and forth randomly between sites I recently visited in that session. Yesterday it froze my Wii and I had to unplug it. Don't press A and B together loads. :P

The wii has always been slow for me, and I think that has something to do with the fact that it's wireless. Does anyone know who does the wifi for it?
