Nintendo: We print money! photo

Nintendo is awesome at two things: Cranking out the same franchises you've been playing for 20 years and collecting on that hard work by the millions. In fact, Nintendo has done so well recently because of the incredible success of the DS and the so far, so good record of the Wii, that they've raised their money-making predictions. From Reuters via GameSpot:

"Merchandise does not move in the January-March quarter--that is the norm in this industry," Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa was quoted in a Reuters report. "But ours somehow did."

Previously, Nintendo anticipated posting net sales of 900 billion yen ($7.6 billion) for the year, but today the company bumped that figure up more than $555 million to 966 billion yen ($8.1 billion). The company expects to release its full results for the fiscal year on April 26.

Well, as long as thos consoles and games keep me coming back for more, I'm glad to give them my money...

It's good to see that no matter what happens, Nintendo is going to be around for a long time

The money is rolling in, the DS has a huge install base and can only get bigger and the Wii is building its install base very fast. I am glad nintendo is printing money. They have been in the background too long and it looks like they are coming back.

Stop trolling, Summa. :P

The thing with nintendo is that most of their games are downright fun, despite them being rehashed plots/characters (and now graphics)

Ah, how cute, someone is bitter because someone else is actually making money in the video game console (and handheld) business. Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to stop bleeding cash and actually break even on its dreams of Xbox world gaming domination in...2025.

Good luck to them and good luck to everyone reading "The Robert Summa Show" on Dtoid. Tedious.

It just amazes me that such a stupid backward company that puts out the same games year after year with shitty graphics can make money while other brilliantly herculean godlike companies who put out the same games year after year but with great graphics seem to be sucking so much ass. WTF? You know what I think it is? It's the Summa curse! Summa is like the poor sons of bitches that always pick the wrong side in a war. They quickly sidle up to whoever they think is strongest only to get their ass handed to them by the spunky underdog.

Technically, they wouldn't have been cashing in nostalgia until roughly 2001. Regardless of this point, Nintendo's 1st party software has yet to disappoint (Mario Party not withstanding).

With any luck, Nintendo can start with new properties now that they've gotten off to a good start (sales wise anyway) with the Wii and (all around) with the DS. More new stuff like Hotel Dusk must be made!

Well, I hope they take a chunk of that cash to secure some exclusives. Hey, I love the first party games but I'm burnt out already. I want some quality third party stuff.

Hang on, I thought the Wii was most popular amongst kids and old people......Die hard loyalists? Most Wii owners either had PS2s or didnt even play games before. I'll admit that Nintendo do tend to rest on their laurels as far as intellectual property goes, but thats where 3rd party games are supposed to come in. If anybody was putting their best people on Wii development and not just pumping out licenced crap and rushjobs (Capcom, I'm looking at you... rail-shooter, FFS), Wii would be wiiked. Until then we will just have to put up with Summa's daily serving of Haterade.

I need to ask...what company does not milk it's franchises? Konami? Capcom? EA? Square Enix? You don't think that if it could, Microsoft would keep Halo going forever? Seems like Nintendo gets to be the scapegoat since they've had the luxury of being around longer for their franchises really to be mined. But I don't see any other big companies taking a different route in publishing.

Don't you guys realize... Summa is actually the biggest Nintendo Fanboy of them all. He just puts out this fake hate to get the rest of you riled up to generate traffic here and drive up ad revenue.

You can't fool me Mr. Summa...I'm on to your plan.

The DS is a truly unstoppable force, do not forget that Pokemon D/P is just around the corner for the USA and in summer it will head to the UK, and its sure to sell millions of copies and many, many more people will purchase a DS Lite system to play Pokemon once it comes out. Regardless of whether you like Pokemon or not, you cannot disagree on the fact that it makes money for nintendo! As if nintendo hasn't already made enough money, this will make them even more money!

"Nintendo, printing money on the backs of diehard loyalists since 1985."

It is a corporation that creates products that people want to buy. This is the goal of most corporations, and they happen to be doing it well lately. You may as well flame McDonalds for hocking shitty hamburgers with the same clown for god knows how long.

yawn indeed.

hell, i don't mind that nintendo is raking in (vacuuming in?) the cash. i'm just hoping sony will eventually take a page or two out of their book--i mean, i think folding@home is cool, but i don't want to buy a $600 box that happens to play blu-ray movies (ALSO GAMES) just to join in. that's what PCs are for.

It is foolish to write off Nintendo's success to the "loyalists." In fact, one of the reasons Nintendo has been so successful in recent years is because the have been able to successfully grow the market. They are reaching entirely new demographics and they have games that appeal to everyone. To suggest that Nintendo is only successful because of so-called loyalists is pretty narrow-minded.

Hay guys, Summa's right, you know.

Nintendo is ALL about the money, while poor little Sony is slaving away with their poor little PS3, selling at a LOSS so that you ONLY have to pay $600 for it. DON'T place your faith in that VILE SNAKE Nintendo, who only covets your money! Instead, you should ALL follow the righteous example of the high prophet Lord Summa, and SUCK the HALLOWED COCK of Sony, for only THEY hold your best interests at heart, and care NOT for your money, unlike the evil blight that is Nintendo! Sony has DIED for your sins and will be REBORN on the third day.

No really, guys, it's totally true.

Yeah, I don't agree with the NDF above that Nintendo are all about the Benjamins. True, the Wii has a barren spell until Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, but...

Holy moley, Batman! We've played those games before!

We've played them before? That's weird, considering that they haven't been released yet, and all. Hur hur.

But seriously. Why does Nintendo continue to get all this flak for having sequelitis (Mario this, Zelda that, Metroid the other, true enough), when the Same. God. Damn. Thing. also applies to the PS3?

Funny how I hear so much about how when Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy Motherfucking XIII are released, that all those who bashed the PS3 will be eating their words or some shit. Well, either that or I hear how the PS3 will be so boned if MGS4 and/or FFXIII are ported to the Xbox360 and are no longer exclusive to PS3, that is. Y'know, sort of like the uproar surrounding Devil May Cry 4 and such.

I hope you're right, though, because yeah, MGS4, FFXIII, and the inevitable Silent Hill 5 are really the only things so far that make me even remotely interested in the PS3, assuming of course they don't also appear on the 360.

See above paragraph re: Nintendo's supposed lack of games, as well.

Man, this sounds so familiar. It almost sounds like all of this stuff has been rehashed to death a million times before. *slaps hands to cheeks* Surely not!

It can take a while before you get to play Mario fully HD on your PS3, by looking at those numbers Summa. My guess is they don't go software only anytime soon.

The weird thing is, the whole "same ol' games over and over" thing I ranted about in my last comment seems to be just a Sony vs Nintendo thing. What about the Xbox360?

They seem to be the only ones coming out with new stuff these days.

I mean, there's Mass Effect (the forty-eleven billionth derivative of the same RPG Bioware has been making for the past 10 years or so), Bioshock (another FPS, which has been billed plenty of times as the spiritual successor to System Shock 2), Assassin's Creed (what, in essence, boils down to yet another stealth game), Fable 2 (which might be everything Fable 1 promised to be and more... maybe), Halo 3 (Halo 2 (Halo 1)), and...

No, I can't go any further. Except for Halo 3, all of those are games that I look forward to.

So yeah, if we're gonna sling shit, might as well go for the atom bomb approach rather than the sniper rifle. None of the consoles are perfect. None of them are completely hopeless either.

As for me, I'd prefer to just futilely sling shit^W^W^W STFUAJPG.
