Nintendo: We can't satisfy you, and that's awesome photo

Nintendo is good at two things: Marketing itself to non-gamers, and patronizing the hell out of proper gamers. Corporate Affairs VP Denise Kaigler is towing the corporate line perfectly, confessing that Nintendo can't please the core gamer, but that's simply super duper!

"I will give you that hardcore gamers have an insatiable appetite for everything Nintendo," she admits, "and we love that! We love that. When we get to a point where core gamers say, 'OK, Nintendo, enough! We don't need any more games from you guys ...' None of us wants to be put in that position, right?

"We don't want your appetite to ever be satisfied, because when we satisfy you, it's time for us to go [dusts off hands], 'OK! Let's go on home now!' And none of us wants to go home. So there's this sort of fun ... relationship, I think, that's happening between Nintendo and the hardcore gamer — which we enjoy and hope that the core gamer enjoys it."

I have got to admit, that is some seriously impressive spin. Quite why Nintendo's executives never went into politics, I do not know. Nintendo can't and won't ever truly appeal to us again, because it keeps our fun relationship going. Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen. I'm pretty sure that's how Chris Brown got started.

Actually, I've seen a few women on the internet very satisfied with Nintendo's Wiimote.

I'm >>THIS<< close too drop-kicking my Wii out the window, especially after hearing crap like that...

"We won't give you good games because once we give you good games, you won't want more. Its muuuch better to tell you they are coming and keep you guessing while shoveling out crapware too our real customer base...Grandpa Simpson over there."

I think thats a fair translation of what was said...

Fuck them...I have no intention of ever buying a Wii. The software library is horrible that it isn't worth my time or money. Keep churning out your dumbed down rehashes of old games and keep selling that shit to the masses, but I'm out of your game. I grew up and saw their game for what it is and I don' want to be a part of it. Call me crazy, or call me sane for seeing this transparent bullshit for what it is. Nintendo is selling shit to consumers who don't know any better and I'm too well informed to fall into that group. Enjoy your Pavlovian waggling.

Nintendo doesn't care about the hardcore audience, because they get all the loving they need (and more!) from casual relationships. The hardcore audience doesn't care about Nintendo and is splitting time between PS3 and 360. Can't we all just stop pretending and move on with our lives now?

What?! When I thought Nintendo couldn't be more fool when treating with hardcore gamers. WHAT HAPPENED?! I was a Nintendo boy in N64 era.

I mean, they will soon say that Wii Sports has the best story ever told in a videogame because it has no story, mark my words.

“proper gamers”

WTF is a proper gamer? If you buy a game and play it, then you're a gamer period. Can we please just stop using all these stupid "buzz words" to describe what kind of gamers we are. We're all just gamers, no matter if you're just starting out, or if you have been gaming for years now.

That sounds like some pretty condescending talk, right there.

In any case, I have a Wii... and just because I have a Wii doesn't mean I hate or like Nintendo or agree with everything that's said--I just enjoy a few games and that's good enough for me since I don't feel the need to have to *LOVE* every game in the Wii catalog.

To be really honest, I have to agree with Nintendo that hardcore gamers are more needy than they used to be. We're about halfway into this generation, and the number of Nintendo key franchise games is pretty good so far, compared to the other generations.

I do think there's still plenty of work to be done by Nintendo, however. And we HAVE had a bit of a Nintendo-drought last year...

Nintendo as a company has a history of adapting with the times to continually increase it's revenue. It was a love hotel at one time, for christ's sake! I personally don't feel any kind of anger towards Nintendo for the decisions it's made in the last few years because it's the most succesful video game company again. Back on top. And it's clever marketing and a unique product that's got them there.
Nintendo is a corporation before anything else. And that means chasing paper.
Am I dissapointed that I'm no longer Nintendo's target demographic? Sure. But do I hate them for rolling with the punches and coming out stronger? Hell no.

In politics, spin is the act of trying to convince people that what looks like one thing is in fact something completely different.

We care less and less about them, but we keep complaining about how bad they've become.

If we just stopped talking about them, all at once, I'm sure they would do something. For now, they get what thay want, we're talking about them.

@DaedHead: It's definitely 'toe'. Like, when someone draws a line and dares you to cross it, if you're really ballsy, you touch it with your toe/cross it with your toe. About the same as "don't fucking touch me" and you just barely poke said person.

English is weird.

Anyway, this is pretty stupid crap coming from Nintendo. The fact that they're hemorrhaging lifelong fans at a critical rate this generation alone doesn't seem to concern them as they get new blood day by day. I mean, they outright refuse to recognize their position as a joke/fad in the industry. As much as I hate to use the terms casual and hardcore, they're not catering to the audience they used to. No one's taking the system seriously so it's riddled with pure crap and they're doing absolutely nothing to stop it.

Anyone else notice they removed "of quality" from the Official Nintendo Seal? =\

BTW, in case you people don't know, these Nintendo execs know jack fucking shit about gaming. Reggie came from Pizza Hut where his big idea was something like the Brooklyn Pizza. They fucking know NOTHING about gaming. All they know is spin and PR bullshit. If you ever thought that they actually cared one iota about the industry other than profits, well then you are a fucking fool. The quality of the product is not what matters. If you ever ate Pizza Hut pizza when Reggie was in charge, well then you know what to expect from Nintendo these days. Cheap, churned out, tasteless unoriginal versions of the same old crap but for a bit more money. Plus, after they get your first couple of orders they want to start to try and pile on a whole bunch of extra crap that you didn't want in the first place, but somehow they convince you that you want it anyways. After you get it home, it sits there doing nothing, getting stale and quickly becoming useless.

Most of the Nintendo administration had no experience with video games at all when the NES first appeared. I think they did pretty well for themselves back then.

The smart ones aren't worried about finding actual good games on the system (we are playing them), we're just worried about Nintendo's awful attitude, and in a way, it does effect us (less "character" exclusives, and more Wii Music bullshit).

I would contend that Nintendo did "ok" considering their only rival back in the NES, and even SNES days was the poorly run Atari, and later Sega (who failed miserably right after the Genesis). They even had their "failed peripheral frenzy" back in the NES days, and I would say a lot of their success came from companies like Capcom, and Square making original, groundbreaking games that had never been seen before. Nintendo didn't have to do much back then (in terms of actual competition), so they were destined to succeed. Then, they kind of waned when a real competitor stepped in (Sony), and the PS2 versus the Gamecube was probably the biggest slaughter of all time. Then, they started getting even more casual friendly, pushed the DS Lite hardcore into almost every home in America, pushed things like Wii Sports onto old people and toddlers, and the rest is marketing genius history. "Most sold" doesn't mean "quality". I think taking the "of quality" off the seal is representative of their new strategy. Of course, I don't want the typical "megaStryke backlash rage" (but would love an "educated megaStryke retort"), and will note I do actually like the Wii.

As usual, taken to literally by the internet.

I think people should drop the "Nothing worth playing on Wii" nonsense to start. I mean, at least 2 really good titles come out each month, be it wii ware or retail. Sure, the other 50 games that same month are utter shovel ware, but how many games can you really buy and have time to play.

Don't take this as me defending the Wii though, because that is not my intention. I just think people should drop the bull crap, because that it all that it is.
