Nintendo waited on Wii MotionPlus tech for three years photo

Destructoid editors manned a good chunk of a center row pretty close to the stage this year at Nintendo's E3 presentation. We could even see Cammie's teleprompter eyes. When the Wii MotionPlus perpherial was finally announced on stage, we all looked at each other as if to say another Nintendo add-on? Great. Superb.

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime said that the MotionPlus was a planned addition from the start. He explained in an interview with VentureBeat that they were aware of the technology back when the Wii was originally designed. They say that it was just that the cost was too high for the business model, so they held off.

"By waiting about three years, the costs come down substantially and it becomes a viable product," said Fils-Aime.

I don't know if I believe that. From the product showing we saw at E3, the games did not look like titles that came from 3 years of knowledge about the perpherial. And we've heard that some of the third-party developers were taken by surprise at E3.

Was it really so expensive that they couldn't add it on in the first place? Edge points out that Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata said in August, "...The cost of making the Wii Motion Plus is not that much, so I think we can make it very affordable." Did the price really change that much in 3 years?

Well, Nintendo held back next-gen gaming, in the gfx department. From the start they were making money from sold consoles, that's a good business model indeed, and they won. They know how to milk every drop, now the motion plus accessory is going to break records in sales. Even more money for nintendo, instead of losing money for a couple of years..

Moore's Law, people. It directly spoke of processor transistor count, but it generally applies to tech costs.

So it really wasn't financially viable to sell the Motion+ back then.

linuxguy hit the nail on the head. Who would've thought that the tables would turn in this direction?

I call bull shit on Nintendo. They knew they were releasing a cheaper console so if they knew about this new technology they figured they'd hold it out until people got bored of the Wii. Then they'd introduce it a few years later and make everyone buy another peripheral.

So was the Wife-o-meter speech really Nintendo's "Developers" speech? Is tacking on motion controls for game ports the same as Sony's "No direct 2d ports allowed" policy?
Is Nintendo to blame for basically everything wrong in gaming today?

This is business, why release your best product when you can mass produce an inferior version before charging more for the better product.

Everyone who owns a Wii will buy this, and Nintendo will own a little more of their souls.

I think they're trying to do some major spin on the cost angle. Obviously the price would have come down in 3 years but does that mean that it would have actually been expensive or that it would have broken the price point planned for the Wii? This is kind of bullshit and bringing it up intentionally seems like a bad idea but I guess Nintendo can't wait for the room to fill with shit before telling everyone about the elephant in it.

Ofc the price can fall enormously in 3 years, just look at CPU and RAM prices. By Moore's Law, 3 yrs ago computing power wa 1/4 what it is now.

I'm no nintendo fanboy, but I think most of the many millions of people who have a Wii would not call it 'shoddy.' It works, it plays games. If it exploded, or if the motion sensor only sensed up and down or down and left, then you'd have a case.

Guess the Wii wouldn't have quite as cheap if they had included it.

Or they just release it now instead of doing it before and admitting that their motion crap wasn't nearly as precise as they swore it was.

They are definitely spinning this, but at the same time I remember when everybody was calling the Wii a rip off at $250. I'm not sure how much it would have upped the cost, but I could see three years' difference taking away the Wii's competitive pricing advantage.

The MANUFACTURING cost of the Wii Motion Plus in 2008 isn't the same as the total cost of incorporating the technology for the Wii dev cycle through the 2005-06 economic year. So what if NOW they can build a unit for small moneys. What matters is that Nintendo set out to build an inexpensive console that was NOT a loss leader. Would nintendo's little white box have been the same smash hit if it had been $400? $350?

Its the same in every single case. Brand new tech is significantly more expensive than the same or similar tech three years later. Is it frustrating for current users (who don't think the Wii is a "ripoff") to have to buy more accessories again? Sure is. Would I have bought a wii two years ago for $350? Probably not.

Lets face it. Nintendo knows a helluva lot more about this business than you haters do; they're the ones making millions of dollars. Just because they're not sending geishas to your home to fellate you whenever you power on the Wii doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing.

I think we will see if the statement holds weight when the MSRP of the MoPlus accessory is revealed. I think it is going to be $20 (oh, sorry, $19.99).

Nintendo are the only company from the start that MADE money on every one of their latest console sold. Would it have killed them to make, just a little bit less?

Cost is too high? Please. I've actually witnessed my dad's company lose a multi-million dollar contract because their bid for $0.33 per part was beaten by $0.32 per part.

I mean, it's only the star feature of the machine. No sense cheaping out on technology that people don't understand, right?

This doesn't surprise me one bit. After seeing how SHITTY the Power glove was when I was a kid, I knew that Nintendo was up to no damn good... The Wii is their failed power glove experiment rehashed.. and you all bought it hook line and sinker.

This is THIS years loot grab.
Wait until they release a High Def system and then want another $300 bucks and then some to have the games you already enjoy in high def.
I own a lot of the carts from the NES SNES and N64. I'm not giving them MORE loot to have these games on the NEW system.
I've already paid for these games, AND systems, and I refuse to pay them AGAIN to play on the new system.

Fuck you Nintendo, you've done too many "shoddy" business deals to warrant me buying anything more from you.

Sony gets my props because I can still play my old games on their new system.
