Nintendo ups Wii output for Europe, Asian countries photo

Nintendo is obviously pleased to be able to brag about the doubling of profits, but to keep that up, they're going to have to sell more wares. From what Bloomberg says, it looks like they're already on it.

Nintendo bumped up Wii production by 80 percent during the fiscal second quarter in an effort to get some Wiis into European homes. That's probably what helped them do so well there, with sales increased 50 percent in the three months ending September 30th.

Nintendo is also planning bring Wii consoles into China and Korea next year, though they may have trouble pulling Chinese gamers away from the brilliant one-off called the Vii.

"We are trying to create an environment that every household has a Wii,'' President Satoru Iwata said. "We are not done yet.''

They plan up keeping up with the bumped up numbers, continuing to put out 1.8 million Wii consoles a month. That's 21.6 million consoles a year. Wow!

I ended up getting two Wiis, and a co-worker got one on Friday morning at a local GameStop.

If you want a Wii, I can't stress enough calling or going to any store that would sell is on a THURSDAY NIGHT or FRIDAY MORNING. Don't even try to fight the crowds on a Sunday morning, and I can just about guarantee that stock will not be replenished any time before Tuesday, at least from what I've seen.

The Best Buys in my area seem to get stock in on Thursday nights. The local Targets also get them in at least once in the middle of the week. You should check your local stores and ask when they normally get their trucks in.

Also, I would highly recommend getting additional controllers NOW even if you don't have a Wii (yet). Don't wait until after Christmas because that's when those kids who got theirs on Christmas will be running out to buy more controllers.

Just my two cents. By checking during the week instead of on weekends, I now have two Wiis and I had 5 Wiimotes back when people were scrambling to find extra Wiimotes.

Those things are really selling like crazy...
One would think that with such simple hardware Nintendo wouldnt have a problem ramping up the production.

The problem is that if they were already at capacity, the only way to get more is to build a new building (and get the appropriate zoning), have new mechanical dies made, purchase new equipment, find a new or additional source for each of the components (any one of which might also be at capacity), blah blah blah. I agree with you in principle, but the reality is that it's not as easy as that.

John B: Yeah, but surely considering that the DS and Wii have both been cash cows for the last year (The DS, even longer), they should at the very least be deep into the process of setting up another building. It's ridiculous to have shortages for THIS LONG. Consumers shouldn't have to read strategy guides on how to get your hands on the Wii. I'm not knocking your advice, I'm knocking Nintendo for making this advice NECESSARY.

And now they're expanding into China and Korea elsewhere? Granted, I don't want to keep the Wii away from them, but should Nintendo really be doing this when numbers are already spread so thin in Japan/US/Europe?

Well, considering you still can’t find the damn things in stores in the States at all, why not concentrate on North America too?

I’m trying to imagine a board meeting that went something like this: “Okay, guys...we can only pick two regions in which to ramp up production. How many hands for North America and Europe? North America and Japan? Europe and Japan? Okay, the last one wins.” Morons.

Yawn. Another Wii anti-fanboy who thinks he's "kewl" and thinks that we give a sh*t. Buy what you like; don't buy what you don't like; and don't think that any of us are going to be impressed either way.

@WDot: I fully agree. My guess is that they're trying to push into China because of that idiotic Vii. If that Vii never came out Nintendo would probably be focusing more on the rest of the world. Honestly, if China ever makes a copyright infringement case in another country I hope the judge laughs his ass off and throw it out, considering how China tolerates the blatant rip-off of others' IP.

Once Wiis are in every home, Nintendo will send out the hidden signal that makes snakes and bugs come out of every user's face like in Halloween III.

About time they move on this. Moving into China and Korea is a positive move, but I doubt it will be in their plans until well into next year or 09. They have too much of a demand to fill elsewhere.

Perhaps new factories could be based in China or Korea to meet the demand we need.

If they keep at this pace they'll be selling more Wii's than Sony has sold PS2's!
