Nintendo unaware of Mario Kart Wii disc read errors photo

Have the worst enemies of the Wii -- dust and cigarette smoke -- returned to wreak havoc on Mario and friends once again?

Reports of some gamers receiving disc-read errors with their copies of Mario Kart Wii are coming out of Japan. This mirrors a similar situation recently with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where the issue was pegged on the game being shipped on a dual-layer disc, and "soiling of the consoles’ optical lens by environmental factors such as excessive dust and cigarette smoke." Nintendo offered to clean consoles, free of charge.

In the case of Mario Kart Wii, Nintendo has told Eurogamer they are unaware of the problem. Mario Kart Wii is only available on a single-layer disc, and therefore "soiling of the consoles' optical lens" shouldn't be an issue. It should be noted that at the time of writing, these reports are few and far between. Let's hope that when Mario Kart Wii hits North American shelves in two weeks there are no issues, because I need to get my Skeletal Bowser on, and I don't have time for these kinds of shenanigans.

No issues with my copy, I haven't heard anyone else complaining either. Just a few people making a lot of noise in this case I think.

I don't have time for it either. Well... Brawl ran fine on my Wii so I can only hope this will too.

This is the first I've heard of this and luckily for me I've had no issues whatsoever *touches wood* and I've been playing quite a fair bit both online and off.

Touching your wood is a little inappropriate for such a serious Wii discussion. Think of the children!

Nintendo is unaware of a lot of things: Disc read errors, online play, fun, mature rated games, appeasing new fans while maintaining the ones they have, getting people to buy their stuff that are out of grade school, competition, normal controller schemes, graphics, next-gen, larger memory, quality, quantity, 98% of Earth, a lot.

While I agree that Nintendo maybe should have designed a console that can work better under "dirty" conditions, I'm shocked at the condition that some people keep their electronics in and then expect them to work. Some pictures I've seen make me think people are blowing smoke directly into the console, and it looks like Pigpen from Charlie Brown got a hold of it and farted on it. Then turn around and blame everyone else but their own dirty selves.

Also cocks.

Haven't had any problems here and I second what NightDehumidifier said.

@Danmartigan:

lol I just re-read what I wrote and just realized that some people may not know the "touch wood" good luck saying that may make my comment look a little....odd :-P That being said I'm sure everyone including the children will get to know my wood soon enough.

I was one of the lucky few americans with the Disk Read Error on SSBB. I hope this doesn't happen again, but if it does I'm not too worried.

The way Nintendo handled the SSBB error was some of the best customer service I'd ever recieved. They took care of all the shipping by just sending me to the nearest fedex, they had it back to me in under a week, it was nice and clean and they even renewed my warranty for free, so I was a happy customer.

$50 supermarket DVD players made from 11+ year old tech seem to read dual layer disc better than your $250 wii.

I must be the only person who had problems with a Wii getting DREs from launch. Even at launch, sometimes I would go to load a game or a channel, and it wouldn't show a DRE, it would just sit at a black screen and I wouldn't be able to do shit about it. I had to hard turn off the console or pull the plug and reboot the whole thing.

That was all before I modded my Wii, too.

I guess we can only hope that most people don't have this problem.

Well, I'm glad all of you had good luck. Ours has intermitent, random, and irratic "disk read errors" on Mario Kart. No other games have this problem, so you can rule out the dirty smoke filled environments. Ours, if anything, is pristine, and we keep the disks in the same "sanitary" state. NOA did offer to take the unit and the disk back under warranty - but as this is the only affecte game we haven't done it yet. Both my daughte and my son have the Wii and MarioKart, and neither have experienced this problem. But I'm here to tell you, IT IS REAL. Any care to swap disks if they don't believe me?
(Further note: Sure would welcome any suggestions.)
