I remember being at GDC 2007 and wandering around on the first day of the event, checking out the mobile gaming area and hearing what sounded like semi-feigned enthusiasm on the part of the developers about their games. "The future of mobile gaming looks bright!" was what I kept hearing, but somehow I couldn't quite see it (although this was before I owned an iPhone).
Apparently that's been the general word on the street for some time, but Nintendo doesn't think too much of it. David Yarnton, the General Manager of Nintendo Uk, recently commented on the topic in an interview with The Times, saying:
"Mobile phone gaming has been 'going to happen' for a long time. We're still waiting."
Wow. It's so ... cold. Yarnton also commented on what Nintendo had in mind when designing the DSi:
"We could have added lots of things, but then you become a jack of all trades, and a master of none. One of the things we are really honest about is that we stay faithful to our roots, of being a games company. The most important criterion is to make sure that what we're offering can do the best games."
Can't argue with that, really. How do you feel about mobile gaming? Is it still more or less unappealing to you, or do you enjoy it?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Decks of hanafuda cards? Isn't that where their roots lay?
I suppose those ARE the ULTIMATE in portable games... right?
Mobile gaming still sucks but Yarnton is an idiot because they just added some shitty ass cameras to the DS.... yeaaah.
"Wanna check a list of the people you need to murder? There's an app for that"
Do I think that mobile gaming is every going to seriously contend for a heavyweight title in gaming? Hell no. Is it useful when I'm stuck in some unholy line at the MVA and roughly half of the county is ahead of me? Hell, yes.
Nintendo needs to get over itself. While not srs bsns, there is money to be made in mobile gaming- or mobile anything, look at the iPhone apps. You're not better for not doing it. Sheesh.
Surely i'm not the only one who sees the hypocracy that nintendo uk embodies. Still least thier not on stage claiming animal crossing to be 'core'.
