Nintendo trademarks 'DSSCAN'... could this use the DSi camera? photo

I have to admit the whole DSi camera thing doesn't sound that appealing, at least not at first. I do carry my DS a lot, but I'd rather take my camera along in another pocket than take a poopy photo with something comparable to cell phone camera quality. The only game we knew the DSi would be camera-compatible with was downloadable versions of Brain Age, so what else would it be used for?

Thanks to the internet matlocking skills of Spencer over at Siliconera, there may just be another possibility to chew on -- that the camera will be used to scan trading cards. The picture above is from Japan's trademark database, showing Nintendo has trademarked "DSSCAN". From the source article:

DSScan was registered on August 19 not as the name of a game, but under the broad category of game equipment. Lots of things fall under this category including trading cards and board game equipment. Paper Pokemon cards are also grouped into this category.

So .. kind of like what the e-Reader did, but as a part of the internal hardware? It could open up some cool possibilities. I'm still not feeling too positive about the idea of not being able to play new DSi import software, but this could definitely be neat, especially if it was used for more than just Pokemon cards.

[Thanks, Adam]

Its bound to be another very gimmicky tech from Nintendo. Remember those e-reader cards? I think it might be something resembling QR codes that are popular in Japan. With the DSi's better internet capabilities, just imagine scanning some code on the camera which downloads you some exclusive DLC in some games.

I think you guys are ignoring the best feature of the DSi. The SD Card Slot. Think about it, downloadable games, possible wiiware integration, or Virtual Console integration where you can take these things on the go.

Even if Nintendo does not do those things, think about how easy it will be to NOT download some roms, and NOT put them on the DSi SD Card. Stuff like this won't take an R4, because the software can be loaded to the SD card.

Once someone does this, i'll buy a DSi. No one really cares about the camera, but bigger screen, and a ligher unit with NOT roms, I'm sold.

I am pretty sure there will come up some trading card support games for the DSi or even more advanced stuff. Aren't there these trading card games in japan where you have to place your cards on arcade game machines. Then the kids will be able to have real animations to their card game actions during a digimon fight etc.. This would be very interesting. Both player scan the cards they want to use and on their DSis pops up a fighting animation, card informations, strategy guides etc...
Especially the combination of real cards and virtual objects in one game will be very interesting.

Mentioning any connection to the e-Reader brings up so many negative implications...
