Nintendo has trademarked a bunch of 3DS-related things with the word "CrossPass" in the name, including CrossPass Mode, CrossPass Network and CrossPass Connection.
Given the way the name sounds and the various words it's been connected with, reasonable speculation assumes that CrossPass refers to the way in which 3DS units will passively communicate with each other, exchanging information while the unsuspecting humans play games or even just carry their handhelds in their pockets.
Known until now as simply "Tag Mode", it would appear likely that this gimmick will be called CrossPass. Of course, it's all rudderless guesswork until Nintendo confirms something, so I guess we'll just have to watch this space.
While we're at it, Nintendo trademarked some prospective game names too -- 3D Paddleball, 3D Challenge and 3D Hopper. It's almost as if they'll be 3D games or something.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Just padding the comments, really, as nothing about the 3DS interests me. No, no, no, I mean, you can post that the 3DS will suck your cock and I won't care, it's already a day-one buy for me. No 3DS story can change that now. For all I care, you could have titled this post "3DS" and the body of the story could be "blahblahblah" and I would still nod my head and say "awesome."
Yeah because PlayStation, and XboX sound so grown up, don't they?
I'm just wondering, why are people so quick to call this a gimmick? Its just another function of the system. Its a always-on feature, that you don't need to have it on, if you don't want it, but why wouldn't you want for your system to get updated on the go?
Whenever it gets a wi-fi signal, or you are near someone else with a 3DS you get updates and new content, which is all free. So how is that bad, or gimmicky? Its just another feature of the system, but if Sony did it on the PSP and charge people for it on PlayStation Plus, then those same people would be saying how awesome it is. I guess some people just like to pick apart anything that Nintendo does these days!
Bah, je l'aurais fait aussi. :P
Wat r u writin, eye dont understamp aye sigle worde.
Oh also since no one has said it straight, and if you're somehow just missing it, we're making fun of the fact you didn't correctly write out the French bit in the title.
@ Kraid : Omelette AU Fromage =D
I fucking lol'd like never before.
@Kraid:
I love you.
3D Hopper = CAT ON A POGO STICK, obviously. GOTY!
Sometimes I feel like insults thrown at the French are directed at me, then I remember I'm Canadian, then I wonder if anyone knows the difference.
