Nintendo to report first profit fall in six years photo

As the world reverberated with economic disaster after boondogle after clusterf--, Nintendo went on strong. They continually profited more year on year while the rest of the planet turned to a shambles. But no more! Malaysia Star is reporting that Nintendo's profits will fall this year.

Now, make no mistake. They made money last year. Boatloads of it. The kind of money where you could pretty much do anything you wanted to if you didn't have to share it with loads of stockholders. No, no. Nintendo just made a little bit less in 2009 than they did in 2008. That's all.

But could this be the end of everything? Will it all come tumbling down now? Has the world had enough and other such leading and completely overblown statements?

Nintendo profit to fall for first time in 6 years [Malaysia Star]

Shame. Really it is. I hope they'll pull through otherwise what would I do without yet another 20 pokemon games... =\

I take it they finally saturated their Wii market? Oh well, time for a new handheld, maybe even a new gimmick.

Touchscreen? Done.
Motion control? Done.
Portable 3d? Sounds good.

Nintendo is worth more than France. They would pull through even if they decided to build a 5000-foot ski slope using only 100-dollar bills.

@Jawshey

I doubt Pokemon is only a resource for low incomes, it has been getting more milked than ever lately and they have been getting money like crazy.

I welcome a lower profit as it could also mean a new plantation of ideas, and they are good at that.

Well they'll recover after Mario galaxy 2, Zelda wii, metroid the other m, etc.

But maybe their greed is finally catching up to them. When xbox 360 arcade is 200 dollars, wii should be 150 or less. They also hate dropping the price of their games. They still haven't dropped the prices of games like twilight princess, and games like big brain acadamey/ dk barrel blast were NEVER worth 50 dollars

There only so many gamers. Without really new hardware it was about time.

oh noes! Does this mean that Nintendo has to come up with something new using their zillions of dollars of retained earnings?!

The DS was pretty weak for 6-7 months at the end of 2009.

That might have something to do with it.

I find it somewhat amusing how people take this as a sign that this is the beginning of the fall of Nintendo and the definitive death of the Wii/DS and everything they stand for.

I always wondered, how many gamers are there in the world? A billion? 2 billion? With that many gamers, the ridiculously high number of Wii and DS sales makes sense.

@WatermanX - I'm not saying they did it badly, just they did it. (Although it was pretty shit before Motion plus, and that's barely been touched since release)

Chill dude.

Sony's MoCo looks pretty bloody interesting so far, hopefully with the precision promised and 3rd party support Sony can generate it'll be pretty cool.

Not surprised at all, really.

They didn't have a new gimmick for casual players in 2009 other than Wii Sports Resort, and that didn't get nearly the same press as Wii Fit. And they did finally cut the price of the Wii last year.

Their biggest Wii titles in 2009 were what, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and Punch-Out!! and a few DS titles like Rhythm Heaven and Bowser's Inside Story? Great titles all, but what's really put them over the top for the last few years is selling systems or expensive peripherals to casuals.

C'mon people. They haven't saturated the market and they're not going to continue this slump.

They have Other M, Super Mario Galaxy, Pokemon Black & White, and the 3DS. They just don't have any killer apps right now.

Again, it ain't a big deal. As Conrad pointed out it's just a little bit less. Big whoop.

I wouldn't even call it a slump. Its just a reality inherent with taking in less in profit on each sold Wii, though the fact that they had to do that does show that demand for it was declining, at least at the $250 price point.

The have a solid line up for the core Nintendo fan this year. It just remains to be seen if they have something to re-ignite the interest of the casual customer. They might. They have been awfully quiet about their Q3-Q4 launch plans. We'll see what their ace in the hole is at E3.

What killed Nintendo's momentum during 2008-2009 was them going in a user-generated content direction (the flagship for this was to be Wii Music), but that blew up in their face, just as UGC did for everyone else in the industry. And in the meantime, they had no new software to focus on motion controls. THAT killed their momentum.

And the price cut didn't drive demand back up. The release of the right software did: NSMB Wii. The game drove up demand so much that Nintendo has shortages again. And Nintendo has already indicated that they are going to be pressing hard on Motion Plus during E3, which means we're bound to see games come out that will spur a similar level of excitement that NSMB Wii did using Motion Plus, on top of everything else Nintendo has planned.

Nintendo has saturated the market? Haha! They haven't even gotten started.

I'm not a Nintendo fan but this means nothing. If the global economy as a whole wasn't down then I expect this story wouldn't exist. Nintendo is great at hitting their core audience and I expect their profits to resume rising once the economy does.

Nintendo has contributed a lot to the current industry, but they need to get their act together. Their system, while it sold millions more, for reasons I won't elaborate on, is a pale system in terms of modern technology. If this is the kind of system lineage we have to look forward to, I would be much happier to see them leave the hardware industry and stick to making games.

Nintendo had an off year in 2009 without any major first party games and their profit drop is akin to trying to keep the Titanic afloat with a beach bucket.

Suffice to say, they'll be just fine.

@Neroisonfire

Why would a company leave an industry where jokes are made about them having the ability to print money? Throwing more and more technology at things isn't always the correct answer. Nintendo proved that. Now they have the best selling home and handheld consoles, and they are an industry leader in making quality first party games. What part of Nintendo's total dominance of a $20 billion industry makes you think they don't have their act together?

Maybe its time for a real price cut for the Wii? Stop packaging it with crappy games and sell it for $99. With the black unit coming out I'm sure that would move a ton of systems.
