Nintendo talks more downloadable content photo

We already know the upcoming Fire Emblem iteration will be getting paid DLC, but apparently that's not the only key franchise Nintendo is looking at. Among a few other tidbits of information involving the financial success of the 3DS in a recent Nintendo Q&A, big cheese Satoru Iwata dropped a particular juicy bit of information: potential downloadable content for future Mario games. Everyone's favorite everyman had this to say about the subject:

"As I referred to before, for example, this is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages. This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it."

Note the important phrase "new profits [for Nintendo]", which implies paid add-ons. Ok Iwata, so let me get this straight. What you're saying is downloadable content, done right, can lengthen the replay value of a game and profit the publisher? Wouldn't that be a win-win situation? Or perhaps, as Michael Scott would say, a win-win-win?

...unless of course they go the way that everyone else is going, and sell you chunks of the game that should have been included with the game, and is in fact on the media (disc/cartridge) and has to be "unlocked" by paying.

Goddamn the game industry is making me sad panda lately. Viva la indie revolution!

@George Booth they have said several times that that's the opposite of what they want to do. They want to give you a full experience when you buy their game and the DLC will be additional content to extend the game.

Slightly off topic, but I think Nintendo should totally release all the Mario eReader stuff as an eShop title.

I love the way in the second paragraph he goes to describe DLC, is if to imply we haven't heard of it before. Also, I thought they were dead against DLC as a company a couple of months ago? I always respected the fact that they believed a product should be brought out complete.

It all depends on how far they go and in which direction. If they simply add new content to augment and supplement existing titles, as the practice is supposed to do, then we're all the better off for it.

If this is about selling half-finished work to people at full price and making double the profit by unlocking what is already present in the game itself or adding what should have rightfully been in the game in the first place, as so many seem to think is commonly acceptable practice, then fuck you for not taking the high road when you had the choice.

It's starting to be blatantly obvious that the industry is about the people who publish the games, not about the people who make them or the people who play them. Hopefully Nintendo isn't that douchey, but you just never know these days.

Exactly this. There's a reason why Borderlands has awesome DLC and Mafia 2 has shitty DLC.

In before they start cutting stages to sell later as DLC like every other company claims they aren't doing :P

Oh Nintendo not having DLC was actually one of the things that drew me to you this console gen ~.~ Sad to see it go.

It does seem kind of depressing to see Nintendo ending its ways of making it so consumers only really need to worry about buying full retail games, however I do kind of trust Nintendo enough that they won't start selling online passes, day 1 DLC that consists of 108kbs, 5 dollar costume packs, etc.

@Nort het I agree completely. Since my above statement I had a small chance to reflect on this. This is Nintendo. A company that, when they *do* release a game, it is usually the only game of that I.P. you are going to see for a very long while. And that game is usually of a very high standard. So what better way to plug the gap than to release additional content for the people who enjoyed it and want to continue enjoying it.

They won't betray consumers trust and spam DLC, they're just not like that. Also I'm pretty confident online passes would go against Nintendo's ideals as a company. I doubt those abominations will ever grace Nintendo a product.

I'm with everybody on supplementing with DLC rather than completing with DLC. Here's to hoping Nintendo is smarter, or, at the very least, observant enough to know better.

These statements were made at an investors briefing, and many of the people there *don't* know what dlc is.

Also, Nintendo was never against dlc: only flimsy dlc. There stance is you buy a full, finished game, and add to it later with extra content.

IPhonePride? Is this a performance artist? I like mobile games as much as the next guy, but if Apple has done something to warrant attracting it's own brand of obnoxious gaming fanboys who assert their faceless brand is somehow better than another faceless brand, I surely must have missed it.

‎”I love the way in the second paragraph he goes to describe DLC, is if to imply we haven't heard of it before.”

He's talking to investors, in a financial meeting, not to us the general video game consumers. Half of those investors, probably don't even know what a video game is, at alone what DLC is. So he's implying that they haven't heard of it before, not you in particular!

The e-reader sucked balls. Swipe six cards back and forth on its scanner to play balloon fight? The technology behind it was cool I suppose but I really felt jipped

I'd be down for downloadable levels, maybe even more characters (Super Wario Land 3D, now with skanky looking Tanooki Wario!), in a Mario game.

Nintendo's stuff would be great for this.. More missions in Star Fox; More Dungeons and story elements in Zelda; More levels and fighters in Smash Bros. They could make it work if they nail down the execution of it all..

Either way, the games we can download from the eShop now are great, but I've got an 8gb SD card in mine that I thought I'd need, but apparently didnt figure on going mostly unfilled, even with the 20+ free games they've given us.. FILL MY MEMORY CARD NINTENDO! MAKE THAT EXTRA $10 I DIDN'T NEED TO SPEND -in hindsight- WORTH IT!!!
