Nintendo talks e-reader functionality for 3DS photo

We heard rumors about some kind of e-reader function for Nintendo's 3DS, but Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata all but confirms it and actually lays out some related functionality in an interview with Nikkei.

"We're thinking about functionality where it will automatically acquire newspaper and magazine articles," he said.  "As you carry it with you while out and about, it will seek out and automatically connect with wireless LAN spots, and download information."

Of course, Iwata is probably thinking of Japan when he speaks of these possibilities. And he rejects any connection to similar functionality in Apple's product line, like the iPad and the iPhone: "I personally am a user of iPhones and iPods," he told Venture Beat. "I think of what these mean to me as a competitor. But I never thought of them when we were designing the 3DS."

I don't care where the inspiration came from so much. I just hope they actually follow through. It would be nice to be able to read on a device that's always going to be in my pocket anyway.

I wouldn't mind something similar to the AP news feed they get on the Wii channels, really. I'm always checking that out before i get started with a game anyway.

Comics and other reading material could be nice, but I'm not really breaking out my PSP for Comics as it is. Mostly because they don't have DC comics.

Holy shit! 3D BOOKS!!! I never thought I would live to see the day. You always hear people talk about great writing that "leaps off the page" only this case it will be leaping off the page LITERALLY!! (<--See what I did there?)

I'm thinking its going to take a picture of a Data matrix bar code to do stuff.
At least I hope it's not going to have a huge card reader....

When will I have time to read when I'm playing Metal Gear and Paper Mario?

But this is a neat functionality. I hope, for some people's sake, it goes through.

Did anyone else think that he meant the E-Reader card-swipe thing for Game Boy Advance, or am I just crazy?

I still have my eReader, but none of the eighty million cards needed for it. :(

Man, I can't wait to read off a 3.5 inch screen...are you serious? Please just make games and forget about this other stuff.

@smackifilia - what's the harm in adding the functionality for those that want it? Its not like its taking away from games. I use my we to check the weather and news and then I play a game on it.

If you can get e-books, movies, news and MP3s on it as well, all the better.

Meh. Reading an e-book on something that's less than the size of a page on a normal book pretty much fails anyway, if my iPod is anything to go by.

Yeah I agree reading text off that sounds headache inducing. Though I guess you can't complain about extra functionality.

I'm not totally into the idea of a DS that's always on and looking for wireless signals. How's that gonna impact battery life?

I hope the 3DS presents all text in a scrolling, "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." style.

Imagine if Nintendo moved into the handheld app device/phone game, with the 3DS as the first model.

is it wrong that i got a little excited when you said "e-reader" and "nintendo" in the same sentence, and then i was disappointed to find out that it wasn't this:

@segasonicdude:

I immediately thought of the ill-fated add-on for the GBA as well. Until I got got to the comments, I didn't really understand the article: WHERE'S MY ICE CLIMBERS ON 5 PLASTIC CARDS?!
