Nintendo talks about new non-game DS functions photo

It makes sense that Nintendo would want to use their portable, wireless touchscreen device for things other than gaming. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata outlined a couple of ideas that they're working on for the DS.

Iwata says that the DS would be useful in places like train stations, museums, and amusement parks, although he didn't give specifics. We're guessing they'll be used for localized uses like information, directions, and even something like food menus. These applications are expected to roll out in 2008.

"This is the first device that is portable and wireless and anybody can use," said Iwata to the Wall Street Journal. "With so many devices out there, it would be wasteful to not turn it into a tool."

It's not a bad idea, especially for a country like Japan, where the population is so dense, and so many of that population are already DS owners. For people like me, it's going to take some self-restraint to be in a museum with my DS and not play a game.

That would be sooooo cool if they able to distribute this around pretty well. I would love to walk around museums with my DS and get info paintings or just use it as a freakin' map. This could be really sweet.

Google Maps DS?

It seems like a good idea, but it probably wont take off. Most people will be like "lol gameboy" and ignore it

On second thought I think most people dont say lol in their head...

I think this is a great idea. Nintendo is always trying to appeal to as many people as possible. Like, wow.

Is this where those odd rumors of a DS for old people, with bigger screens but the same resolution, came from?

Well that took long enough, I've been wondering when they were gana do this for a while. I need a program that works like a check book money manager.

This is a good idea. A card with all the maps for a city on it. You'd be hard pushed to get lost again.

I kinda glad the DS has these aps options. I'm considering buying some of the My French/Spanish Coach series, to help me learn a new language. Spanish is one of those languages that's very useful.

I'm sure if a learn japanese cart comes out, it'd sell like hot cakes.

I just cant wait to see what other apps the think of to put on it. Knowing nintendo they are bound to hit on something that the mass US population would really love.

I'd definitely be willing to buy this, even if it's just useful for Japan. God knows I'll get lost there. Touch screen functionality + GPS = win.

I've been yearning for an e-book reader for the DS for a long time now. It's the perfect platform for such a thing. You could even hold the DS sideways a-la Brain Age and have page-turning functionality.

I could use that, but then again, I could use a GPS strapped to me at all times anyways.

If the big theme parks, such as: Universal, Disney, Six Flags, etc. got in on this, and put an interactive wireless map up, with hotspots everywhere so that you can access it from anywhere, that would be awesome. Museum guides and fun facts, Mapquest-esque software, the possibilities are endless...

You hear me Nintendo?? I said the possibilities are endless! So don't screw it up! I know the DS already prints money, and everyone and there dead grandmother has one, but make your customers happier! We heart you if you do things right and please us!
