Nintendo still hates modders, going after Germany now photo

It's no secret that Nintendo is on the hunt for outlets that sell devices and modifications that circumvent the copy protection schemes in their consoles, and now Nintendo is asking German shops that sell Wii mod chips to stop.

I4U links us to a German news article that reports that Nintendo is asking shops for the names of the mod chip manufacturers they recieve their stock from. They are also asking these stores to destroy their stock of modded Wii consoles as well as the chips themselves.

My quick check of a few German mod chip distributors shows that some are not too concerned about selling these products online, though Cheap-chip.com and xtrem-tuner seem to have removed Wii mods from their listings. I did notice that all continue to sell Nintendo DS related devices, though.

You know PS3 games are REGION CODE FREE, Xbox 360 games are mostly REGION CODE FREE... only Wii games are last-gen REGION LOCKED?!

Modchips should be protected by the constitution NOT GUNS!

You know this wouldn't happen if you didn't put region coding on your console, you dumb jerks. You leave it off the DS and put it on the Wii?
Absolutely fucking stupid.

We all know that the whole region argument when it comes to modchips is a sham. You are just trying to support the ability for the idiots to played pirated games. OHH NOES NINTENDO...DONT TREAD ON ME. I JUST WANT TO PIRATE YOUR GAMES ON MY MODDED WII BUT CLAIM I DID IT FOR MY TRIP TO CHINA LOL REGION CODING IS GAY.

I can't really blame them and have no reason to mod my stuff.

If you bothered reading the manual, it says that playing games from a different region then the one you bought your console in is illegal. So the whole "I got my chip to play imports/homebrew" is just stupid.

I'd like to know what Nintendo is doing about the Vii.

Isn't modding a Wii relatively pointless? All Nintendo has to do is release a firmware upgrade that instantly stops the modchips from working, yes?

Painuser: Nobody disagrees that the main purpose of modding is for piracy but as long as there remains some that just wish to play imports (such as anyone who lives in a country that Nintendo hates such as Australia) then there will be a case for allowing mod chips. If Nintendo (and other companies) removed that group by bringing an end to the idiotic region restrictions then fighting modchips would be far more straight forward.

verkon: Just because a manual says it's illegal doesn't mean it is.

I wish the system was region free cost so much to get a Japanese system etc. I like on the Cube that you could just use a boot disk or earlier importers used a toggle switch. I personnally bought my cube with a toggle preinstalled was like 30 bucks more and I didnt have to mess with it and it allowed me to play imports no issues just switch up it was a US system down it was a Japanese one. Probably the majority of Modders are using it to bootleg but that does not mean that it doesn't have legit uses.

Now people hating on importers that use mod chips can suck it I dont care if you are happy with your Regions games. Sure the games are not made for that region and there is some terms of use written in the manual but if its written in japanese how the hell am I supposed to read that :P. The devs are getting there money if I buy the game regardless of the region. And If I want to turn my system into a toaster home media center or george foreman grill (sure that voids my warranty) why should it be anyones buisness but my own unless I'm ripping someone off.

I have no issue with Nintendo going after these companiese cause modchips are used for rampant pirating and they have to protect there investment. But get off the high horse!

Some of us like to backup our legally bought games. at 50+ dollars per game id prefer to have a backup get ruined instead of a original. mod chips have plenty of legal uses, and shouldn't be condemned beacuse of the illegal ones.

pm5k00: That is a sad excuse...I don't know any adult from me or my friends who have ever broken a game and we own a lot. We aren't careful with them either, they're pretty damn resilient and if you break it, that's your fault.

I'd love to see how many shops actively destroy their own stock.

No I'm not jealous that you completely destroyed the comments in this section with your huge image. Learn to resize, thanks.

And I've seen that image on a Smash forum, that guy is pretty funny.

That is the biggest picture I've ever seen.
Ever.
I'm kind of scared.

On topic: I've always been iffy about modding a console. I really enjoy my R4, but only because it's easy, and I use it for "legitimate reasons" (e.g. I use it to store all the games I own for easy access, as well as handy homebrew tools). I'm not saying I'm against the modding thing, but it's always been skerry lol.

In Be1jing, copied games cost 6 RMB, which is like $0.85...that includes a nice real looking print on the face of the DVD, and a color DVD insert...just no DVD case. In Bangkok, where I lived before, they cost 200 Baht, which is like $5. Crazy times :)
