Nintendo software won big in December according to the latest NPD Group information, beating out Activision’s behemoth and various other titles released before or during the hot and steamy seasonal month.
Selling 2.82 million units, New Super Mario Bros. Wii claimed the number one spot in the Group’s Top 10 chart. Nintendo’s Wii Fit Plus came in a close second with a grand total of 2.41 estimated units. Wii Sports Resort sold 1.79 million units while Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 rounded out the top five by selling 2.75 million units combined (Xbox 360 & PS3).
The rest? Know this: the venerable Wii Play bundle sold 1.01 million units, beating out Nintendo's Mario Kart, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed II, Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2, and Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story.
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) -- 2.82M
- Wii Fit Plus (Wii) -- 2.41M
- Wii Sports Resort (Wii) -- 1.79M
- Modern Warfare 2 (360) -- 1.63M
- Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) -- 1.12M
- Wii Play (Wii) -- 1.01M
- Mario Kart (Wii) -- 936.1K
- Assassin’s Creed II (360) -- 783.1K
- Left 4 Dead 2 (360) -- 728.5K
- Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS) -- 656.7K
And, yes, the cash generated is down from last year. We blame this on one of either of these two things: (a) the crummy economy and (b) the new low, low prices at Papa Johns.

Kalmah:
The shovelware isn't in that list, brah
HARDWARE - PS3 - 1.36 million
360 - 1.31 million
Close, but the win goes to Sony.
I have silly thoughts during the holidays.
Equally silly is that it kind of warms my heart to know that old school Mario can still sell big numbers.
@Mk
Whenever I see a sale for WiiPlay, I assume someone was just buying a second controller and got WiiPlay out of the deal.
oh oh also, those Wii Sports Resort numbers means a bunch of people have Motion Plus. Get to developing developers!
Although it still eludes me as to just how many more homes a Wii can get into...
As for the phenomena of Wii Play selling so well for so long, I think that's just because it's esentially a Wiimote with a free game. If I was going to buy a Wiimote, it'd be even better to get a free (if slighly mediocre) minigame compilation alongside it.
What exactly is this shovelware that you're referring to? The only one that you could possibly be right on is WiiPlay, because lets face, its just a $10 mini-game collection thrown in with a free Wii remote. But all the other games for the Wii on that list are averaging good review scores. So just because you don't like them, or are too arrogant to even try them, it doesn't mean that there shoevelware.
I'm all for the rest of the games on that list. I'm just confused by the thought of those tacked on titles are constantly overshadowing better Wii titles like Silent Hill, Conduit, Punchout, Madworld, etc... by casual parents and gamers with the slightest (to none) understanding of their purchases.
Also, how in the hell did Wii Fit Plus & Wii Sports Resort outsell Modern Warfare 2? Nothing makes sense anymore.
but it does make sense! There's a larger install base with the Wii. While I can agreeto disagree about the quality of the games you don't like on the wii, I think it comes down to this, games are about having fun, and these "casuals" see games that look fun, and get them.
So what if they don't have a cinematic approach? If they're fun, that's all that matters!
Oh, wait...
Wow, so you go from Triple A to shovelware? There's no middle ground in your world? You can't just have good games, that are reviewed good and sell extremely well. Oh and by the way I would say that NSMB: Wii is considered a Triple A game. How could you not think that, it reviewed great and sold phenomenal, so what's a triple A game in your mind?
What Kalmah is defining as shovelware is any collection of boring minigames. I'm inclined to agree with that, even if they are developed by a first party.
The only exception is Mario Party. But even that's pushing it what with all the fucking sequels...
Hardcore does not = good.
what a great game.
