Nintendo 3DS goes $169, old customers get 20 free oldies photo

Nintendo has announced that they will be changing the manufacturer suggested retail price for their Nintendo 3DS handheld worldwide. The gaming system which launched less than five months ago at $249 will be available for a mere $169.99 come August 12. Similar cuts are occurring in Japan, Europe and Australia.

Did you catch that? It's an $80 price cut. That's almost 30% off of the original asking price for a product that fans and loyalists bought on the promise that great things were coming when nothing has come. And now this in less than six months. But don't worry. Nintendo has a plan for those of us who feel a bit chafed.

See, Nintendo understands the needs of the core customers who bought in early to feel satisfied with their purchase. So they're going to give everybody who bought a 3DS prior to this point the opportunity to download a collection of ten NES games for free before they hit the eShop. They'll also be giving out ten Game Boy Advance titles, including Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3Mario Kart: Super CircuitMetroid FusionWarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, before the end of the year. These GBA games are currently expected to be exclusive to early adopters or, as Nintendo calls them, "Ambassadors."

So, you're going to get twenty old games for free, some of which are very old and have already been milked to death on other downloadable platforms (NES games include Super Mario Bros.Donkey Kong Jr.Balloon FightIce Climber and The Legend of Zelda). This is supposed to make up for it.

I'm not the sort of guy who wants something for free. I'm glad that they're admitting that they're bending over their core consumers and offering them some form of compensation for the pleasure, but they can keep their exclusive downloads of games I bought from them at least once already. I just hope this teaches us all a lesson in early adoption.

80 dollars is a pretty serious price drop for a more or less new console/handheld.

much much MUCH better price. If a price drop didn't happen soon, the Vita would have embarrassed the 3DS. I do think that such a massive price drop so quickly just goes to show how greedy Nintendo got with their hardware pricing. isn't the actual manufacturing cost of the 3DS half of what they were charging?

Awesome. If those GBA titles come to the eShop later on, that would be nice.

I was expecting a price drop by the end of this year, but I didn't think it would be this soon, nor by that much. Hopefully this'll help give the system some momentum.

Also, I hope WarioWare doesn't stay exclusive to early adopters. I'd pay for that for the third or fourth time, because I'm a whore like that.

Fuck you Nintendo. Fuck you. Im always with you from the get go and now this is how I'm rewarded?! Essentially being screwed out of $80?! Thanks ... Thanks a lot.

Lolololol.

So glad I waited, well I'm still waiting.

I don't care for old games, I don't care for ds games.

I want proper core 3ds games. Just give me 1 and I'll buy your little 3d doohicky.

Street fighter is the only one that interests me and that is a minor interest.

At least after a few more months of piss poor sales I might be able to pick one up real cheap!

I don't regret buying my 3DS early. I've used my 3DS enough that the 80 dollar price cut doesn't bother me. Especially if they're offering 20 free games as a way to apologize.

Those aren't really worth it in my opinion, they should of given early adopters something more.

anyways I hope Sony drops the Vita price as well till its next to nothing

Of ALL the gameboy advance titles to choose from, that's what they decided on? I'll be okay with this if we get some games more along the lines of "Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga" and "Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby". But they're Nintendo, and Nintendo these days just isn't that down to earth with their decision-making,

Not even Nintendo can ride on nostalgia and sub par software anymore.

Perhaps this will drive them to drop the bullshit and start up some new and innovative IP's.

(lol. I don't believe that and I typed it)

Hm. I'm glad they're giving away decent games. The 3D Classics were making me start to think Nintendo had forgotten what their good older games were. They could've just given us the next 10 Gameboy games that are due to be released....

Well they needed a price cut and it was the smart thing to do. Seems like a decent apology to early adopters (I'm one of them). Its not like they can offer much else.

I will be more careful about early adoption in the future though.

So early adopters paid 80 dollars more, but they got it 6 months early, excite bike 3d, and 20 free games (considering nintendo will probably price those games at least 8 bucks each) it's not too bad a deal I guess.

Although people complaining really have no right IMO. You saw that the system was overpriced, you saw that the launch line up was barren, you knew that the Vita was coming, you should have known a price drop would be somewhat soon, and you know that there will be a 3DS lite coming soon which you will also complain about because you were too impatient to wait. I'd say you're lucky for any compensation.

You can't blame nintendo, the system wasn't selling as much as they expected, and I think even nintendo realized they couldn't go head on with the vita priced in the same range. But cool for me I guess, I didn't buy my system and am getting 20 free games, I feel blessed. But nintendo hatred WILL go wild, and in all honesty I wouldn't blame the people who actually bought it, this is no 20-50 dollar price cut after a year, but an 80 one in mere months.

Whatever. I'm not gonna whine about losing out on 80 bucks. Its money I was planning on spending anyways. And since the GBA titles are apparently going to be exclusive to this program, and most of them are ones I actually want to have, I don't feel too terribly reamed. Not worth the butthurt.

Good point, plenty of people assumed a "3DS Lite" would be coming soon and waited, when others got it anyway.

I have no regrets being an early adopter and paying the full 250 price. Hell I bought two on launch day. Now, since I was an early adopter I get 20 free games. Old games or not that's pretty awesome, who wouldn't want something for free?

Also, did anyone NOT see a price cut coming especially after Sony announced the Vita at $249?

God dammit! Now, more people will get a 3DS!! I was hoping that, since I bought it early for $250, Nintendo would have let me have a chance at showing off my new handheld! Nyaaaaaaa!!!!! Fudge you, Nintendo! Now my cousin will get one, and I won't be able to rub my 3DS and my balls to his face anymore! *whines like a kid who went shopping with his parents but didn't get the toy he was promised with*

... Free games you say??... But none of the Hoenn Pokémon games??!! WTF?! Sure, the Hoenn remakes are coming later this Gen, but I would have wanted to experience one last time since my DSi and 3Ds don't have GB slots!

I knew a price cut was coming after the PS Vita was announced, sure I didnt know it was going to be such a huge drop, but it still doesn't faze me,getting 22 free games in total is nice (including Excitebike and Pokedex),and lower price=more people have it=more games coming out,so frankly IDGAF.

I don't regret my purchase; I wanted the 3DS on launch day and never was in need of an avalanche of games right off the start (my time nor wallet would make that feasible anyways) and I did just that, the same I did when the phat DS came out. thanks for the games Nintendo (I rather have a $80 voucher though lololol).

I was literally seconds away from trading this thing in to Amazon until I read that I get 20 games. Although I'm angry about it being new and getting a price drop these games are some of my favorites. I'm just disappointed that there's no Pokemon included or available on the shop yet.

WTF! I would not pay $80 for 10 NES games and 10 GBA games I probably already own! How about a choice of "thank you packages," like free Skyward Sword a few days early?

Early adopters with no regrets represent. A gift of twenty free games is nothing to sneeze at, even if they're old games you didn't get on the Wii Virtual Console because you already own them on the NES (and replaced the save batteries yourself like a boss).

It's funny that most of you are forgetting that those GBA games are half of the package and that alone is almost the 80 bucks they dropped.

They could have easily done NOTHING to early adopters, they put you on VIP and you take it as a disservice.

Free games are nice 'n' all but I do still feel like a dick for buying the 3DS at launch (especially when my original unit bricked less than two months in). I've barely touched the bastard thing since day 1 and in all honesty if I had the choice between a bunch of games I've mostly played several times before or spending almost a third less in the first place, I'll take the latter.

1) I hope this also means downings on DS products (I could be in the market for the absurdly large DSi XL).

2) Fusion?! Mega Microgame$?! Eff yes. With the 3DS's gyro, this better also mean Twisted! is in the pipeline.

Now, if only they could associate those purchases with an account past who claims goodies in Club Nintendo.
