Nintendo has announced that they will be changing the manufacturer suggested retail price for their Nintendo 3DS handheld worldwide. The gaming system which launched less than five months ago at $249 will be available for a mere $169.99 come August 12. Similar cuts are occurring in Japan, Europe and Australia.
Did you catch that? It's an $80 price cut. That's almost 30% off of the original asking price for a product that fans and loyalists bought on the promise that great things were coming when nothing has come. And now this in less than six months. But don't worry. Nintendo has a plan for those of us who feel a bit chafed.
See, Nintendo understands the needs of the core customers who bought in early to feel satisfied with their purchase. So they're going to give everybody who bought a 3DS prior to this point the opportunity to download a collection of ten NES games for free before they hit the eShop. They'll also be giving out ten Game Boy Advance titles, including Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, before the end of the year. These GBA games are currently expected to be exclusive to early adopters or, as Nintendo calls them, "Ambassadors."
So, you're going to get twenty old games for free, some of which are very old and have already been milked to death on other downloadable platforms (NES games include Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda). This is supposed to make up for it.
I'm not the sort of guy who wants something for free. I'm glad that they're admitting that they're bending over their core consumers and offering them some form of compensation for the pleasure, but they can keep their exclusive downloads of games I bought from them at least once already. I just hope this teaches us all a lesson in early adoption.
*looks at calender* no april fools....hmm
Also, I hope WarioWare doesn't stay exclusive to early adopters. I'd pay for that for the third or fourth time, because I'm a whore like that.
So glad I waited, well I'm still waiting.
I don't care for old games, I don't care for ds games.
I want proper core 3ds games. Just give me 1 and I'll buy your little 3d doohicky.
Street fighter is the only one that interests me and that is a minor interest.
At least after a few more months of piss poor sales I might be able to pick one up real cheap!
anyways I hope Sony drops the Vita price as well till its next to nothing
love this company, cant wait to get my 3DS now.
Perhaps this will drive them to drop the bullshit and start up some new and innovative IP's.
(lol. I don't believe that and I typed it)
I will be more careful about early adoption in the future though.
Although people complaining really have no right IMO. You saw that the system was overpriced, you saw that the launch line up was barren, you knew that the Vita was coming, you should have known a price drop would be somewhat soon, and you know that there will be a 3DS lite coming soon which you will also complain about because you were too impatient to wait. I'd say you're lucky for any compensation.
Good point, plenty of people assumed a "3DS Lite" would be coming soon and waited, when others got it anyway.
Also, did anyone NOT see a price cut coming especially after Sony announced the Vita at $249?
... Free games you say??... But none of the Hoenn Pokémon games??!! WTF?! Sure, the Hoenn remakes are coming later this Gen, but I would have wanted to experience one last time since my DSi and 3Ds don't have GB slots!
They could have easily done NOTHING to early adopters, they put you on VIP and you take it as a disservice.
2) Fusion?! Mega Microgame$?! Eff yes. With the 3DS's gyro, this better also mean Twisted! is in the pipeline.
Now, if only they could associate those purchases with an account past who claims goodies in Club Nintendo.
