IIIIIIIII see what you did there.
Also, sh*t that sucks. I've been meaning to watch this. Eh, it's probably somewhere on the internets.
I feel it is now my moral duty to download this movie and redistribute it in as many places as possible.
I hope that was unintentional, but it probably wasn't. I laughed either way.
win-win
Maybe Nintendo was being altruistic? I hope. I don't want them to start pulling RIAA stuff.
Is Nintendo making a Zelda movie? No? Then why shut down someone who loves the series enough to make one themselves? Sad panda. :-(
I'm just angry at the principle of it, and the now apparent risk for any fan-made Nintendo games. I don't want to see that amazing Metroid 2 remake getting canceled before it's finished.
However I wonder if Nintendo would've made them take it down if it didn't make Link and ever other beloved Zelda character look retarded. Seriously, that film sucked. I only watched the first 3 minutes or so and I was already so embarrassed I couldn't watch any more.
Just because this one was hyped they chose to shut it down? I suppose they have the right to but that is still ridiculous.
Also, thank goodness. I don't understand how anyone could sit through that. I made it through 20 minutes. I was afraid I'd develop a tumor.
Protect them from what?
How is a fan-movie that makes no claim of ownership of the characters and does not seek anykind of profit, pose a danger to their properties?
hell this movie is no different than fan art
Having good writing, editing, and shot structure are free.
I mean holy shit, I wasn't expecting it to be on par with LOTR or anything, but it was just... ugh. I was sort of hoping it was intentionally bad.
It is so bad that it reflects negatively on the franchise, which is probably why Nintendo wanted it pulled. Just imagine if it was the first exposure a kid had to Zelda. It would take therapy to get that kid to play one of the games.
That sorta crap.
THIS IS WRONG
Say I put up a piece of fanart of Link having sex with a goron on deviantart. No problem there. Say I get that piece of fanart published in a magazine, distributed all over the interweb and displayed in public galleries. It achieves a high level of recognition and becomes associated with the Zelda series. It may lead gamers to think of Link fucking a goron, when the next Zelda is announced. Nintendo does not want people to think of Link fucking a goron, they would ask me to stop distributing the piece of artwork. And Nintendo does not want people to think of an unofficial fan movie either.
Thank God Nintendo had them pull it. As an editor and director myself for low budget videos I was appalled to see such destruction of a good set of characters.
Good residence to bad rubbish.
That's why a good line to draw is at the profit line... Really, striking down this movie would be like striking down every piece of fanart on Deviantart... might aswell strike down pretty much every zelda flash parody ever made while your at it too
There is such a thing as "fair-use". It illustrates the limits to which we are allowed to use copyrighted material before we are in violation of said copyright. I think Non-profit fan-made endeavors such as this pretty clearly would fall into that... It's true that "noncomercial does not automatically mean fair-use", but the only exception i have found to this is in the case where the work made provided for free what people would normally have to pay to see (which i do think would exclude this movie)
On one hand, GOD IT WAS SO GOD AWFUL, but it was hilarious haha.
On the other one, itīs so much dickery they shutted down a ton of work from the fans that spent years doing this. Sort of reminds me of Chrono Ressurection.
Nintendo are making an example to discourage people making money off their backs. The fact these guys weren't making money (yet) is irrelevant to the point they're making.
But they're not making money what is the point? We're gonna stop this one tiny fragment of the Zelda fan fiction community on the basis that it just possibly, but probably not, but just might make some money?
M'kay.
Nintendo doesn't hate fanworks, on their forum (which they retired to focus on software development) they actually had special boards just for fanart and fanfics. Nintendo even showed footage of people's web published Nintendo (Mario, Pokemon, Exc.) skits at E3 07 and 08 to demonstrate the penetration of Nintendo into mainstream awareness.
Heck, I even met Miyamoto and Reggie (the latter of whom I met twice) wearing a home crocheted hat of Ezlo from Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap which they thought was awesome.
Unfortunately, Nintendo also has to be aware that they need to demonstrate that they are willing to protect their trademarks and copyrights when overly ambitious fanworks or unlicensed imitations step into what Nintendo views as their exclusive domain, and that basically includes video and computer games using Nintendo's IPs without permission (Nintendo is a game company after all), and in this case feature length fan films that aren't any good to begin with and may impact the public's perception of Nintendo's games and franchises.
I really dislike litigation and legal threats and stuff like that, but I can't blame Nintendo for not wanting their hard work associated with this half hearted mockery. Aside, it will always be available via torrent.
