Nintendo shutout: Every game on Japan's Top 21 is either on the Wii or DS photo

Fanboys, today is your holiday. Gamasutra is reporting that every single best selling game in the Japan Top 21 is on a Nintendo platform, topped off by Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. The closest non-Nintendo game was Capcom’s Monster Hunter Portable 2nd for the PSP, and interestingly enough there were no PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 titles in the top thirty. But they have HDMI?!!

With recent news that the Nintendo DS sold over 10 million units in Japan, I'm not surprised. Wii's are practically impossible to find unless your city is preoccupied because it's on fire and we're bored of Wii Sports -- I'll offer up trade-ins for whatever looks halfway decent on the shelf.

These numbers further seal the tomb on the age-old arguement of underpowered Ninty systems: While neither console offers the most high definition gaming experience, it's obvious that gamers don't care. People just want to have fun and Nintendo's laughing all the way to the bank.

Do you think that we'll start to see some great games from 2nd and 3rd parties that actually use the Wiimote in a useful way now that the thing is ruling the roost?

Short of Square's remake-everything quest I've yet to see strong 3rd party support. There's a few capcom hits trickling in, but that's about it.

This won't stop people claiming that the fad will be over soon.

Sure, there aren't many games now, but that's because no-one expected it to do this well. Now every developer and their dog has titles planned, so when the Wii is getting it's second wind and the drought finally breaks, we should be sitting pretty.

Same thing happened with DS. Gimmicky games at the start that left many people wondering if this was it. Now look at the DS. The only thing that can come close to it's sales are the Wii.

Of course, don't tell Summa. Wii isn't as pretty.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the full list.

If you've had a Wii since launch or close to it, it is lacking at the moment. Luckily RJG is right and every developer that can is working on a Wii game at the moment with each month more and more Wii games will be announced. Some of those will not be quality and just trying to cash in (EA Playground?) but just like the DS, things will pick up and will turn out nicely.

I'm actually getting closer to believing that the Wii will come out ontop of the 360 this time around (currently still thinking the 360 will come out on top though).

@ Kyousuke,

Are you sure? At some point all those people who bought Wii's are going to look for another game besides WiiSports. Software will be bought, numbers will shift, and heads will roll (on the internets anyway).

Yeah, the way I see the Wii, it's a 3D DS for the home market, and the reasons it's doing well are the same as for the handheld. And the reasons for its slow start also share the same parallels.

As for the software, the mantra repetition continues:

It's only been out six months!
It's only been out six months!
It's only been out six months!
It's only been out six months!
It's only been out six months!

Only 20% of Japanese homes have HDTVs. In comparison, 58% of homes in the US have HDTVs.

It's not too surprising to find that the Japanese haven't jumped on the HD console bandwagon yet. Also, like Nanbu said, the Japanese "love weird quirky shit".

You're not going to convince Summa to like the Wii. If you've paid attention, Summa is a graphics whore who likes shooting things, killing things big explosions, and 1080p. The Wii doesn't cater to people like him and likely never will. The only problem is that he has a rather large microphone and tells everyone what he thinks.

It is his opinion. My opinion disagrees with his opinion as do many others. There are many who agree with him ***cough EG - Force cough ***. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. That's what comment sections are for. ;-)

Wow, Nintendo is cleaning house. They must be making oodles of cash seeing they are not taking a loss on the wii. With all their accumulated wealth, they can produce a system in the future with the graphical power of the ps3 (and by 2009 everyone will be HD so they will make their system hd) and have their patented motion controls down.

So everyone who is saying the PS3 will be the inevitable winner in the end ...it may not be so...

Why does everyone think that if Nintendo released a New console in 2009 and charged you full price all over again, it woudl be a GOOD thing?

@Necros

Hehe, those were just the two high sellers that came to mind first. I played Nintendogs for like a week, it's a shame my little "scruffy" will never get any attention again, but by no means am I going to call it a GOOD game :) A fun game, yes, A good game, no. my problem with nintendo is that most of the "good" games are always japan only. but that is how it has been forever. NES and SNES had A LOT of great games that never saw light over here. if i remember correctly there were a few N64 games that MIGHT have saved the 64 if they would have came out here. they didnt. i guess thats just how nintendo is though. i was hoping with the Wii that there would be more Japanese games being released here...

That's what I call pwnage. Hopefully nintendo's j-domination will finally mean we get a decent number of RPGs on their consoles. A question though, am I really one of the only ones who doesn't think the wii's current lineup is that bad? I mean shit, I'm even in fucking europe. People are perfectly entitled to not like the games currently out, but I think there are some damn solid titles, considering how briefly the console's been on the market.

-> Aex: Surprised noone else has fielded this yet but hajime no wii = wii play = second wiimote. But did you not get the big lebowski quote? If not, go watch it right now. Twice.

-> kenoji: Anyone saying the ps3 is the inevitable winner at this point probably has their fingers in their ears, their eyes closed and is droning "nyah nyah nyah can't hear you nyah nyah nyah" over and over. Brand recognition is powerful, but it's not jesus.

Or it could be that the xbox 360 has never been popular in Japan and the PS3 still has no games that could be on the top 10 list.

Btw: the Numero uno, here in the US is Spiderman 3 for the 360.

Anyway Im not even going to try to say bashing the DS, Im glad is selling like hot cakes in Japan, and Im glad is in the top 10. the DS is a great handheld. period

The only people that care are Nintendo fans that can point to the list and say "YOU SEE, Nintendo is the best. HD and graphics matter huh? Well Japan would disagree."

if nintendo keeps this up, they'll be able to make a DS that actually prints money. then they would sell even more units, which customers use to print money that they can buy more DSs with, and before you know it, nintendo has enough cash to build the matrix and enslave humanity...or buy a really pimped-out ride, or something.

It's all about the money...

Developers and Publishers are looking at this and the hardware trends...and they're shifting more and more resources to Wii development.

That doesn't mean the old favorites will stop appearing on the XBox360 and the PS3 (especially those the Wii can't handle graphically)...but this should mean an eventual landfall of new IP Nintendo's way over the course of the next three+ years.

I know you are just trolling, but one might answer.

"It has been 6-7 years since they released their last console, they were due for an upgrade. While I don't agree that the price is a good idea, if this console lasts another 6-7 years until their next one drops, I might be able to justify it, or least wait until a price drop"

Of course, that still leaves my question unanswered, and you a troll. ;)

I am no Nintendo fanboy, but I am a Japanese game fanboy. I can count the console games that I have loved that were produced soley in any country but Japan on one hand. The PC is a different story, but for consoles, American games tend to stink.

So for me, I'm jsut psyched that Japan loves the Wii. That implies that Japanese game developers will also love the Wii, and that I will get to play many new awesome japanese games on the Wii.

@Geese,

Not sure where you're getting your US numbers for HD penetration, I didn't see a link, but here one is. US HD penetration is at 28% currently.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/04/13/28-percent-of-americans-now-own-an-hdtv/

@Broham,

"The only people that care are Nintendo fans that can point to the list and say "YOU SEE, Nintendo is the best. HD and graphics matter huh? Well Japan would disagree.""

Not the ONLY people. Sure, the people you mention DO love these stats, but in all honesty, I do look at Japan as a bellwether in gaming particularly because I like many japanese games (in addition to western ones of course). Sadly I'm often disappointed that many games don't make it over here. But I still enjoy knowing what's going on over there as far as trends and what not.

"I'm supposed take note what people who enjoy games about undressing underage girls, poking people in their ass, and cum faces are playing right now?"

Now you've gone too far. Kancho is possibly one of the greatest games every imagined!

(I heard that "SneakKing" was actually a port of an old Kancho game.) And Kancho is far superior to it's westernized cousin; "Nutslap!".

I'm going to have to back up subnet6 on this one, the current US penetration is at 28%. I was confused previously and thought it was at 52%, but that was the sell in penetration. Which means a majority of all TV's sold last year were HD TV. That number continually rises, and is proof that SDTV is phasing out. Now if only the demand for HD content will rise, thanks to DirectTV I think it is (150HD channels coming soon!)

1/4 of all American's having some form of HDTV is still promising. Specially when you consider what the Average income of American households is, and also what demographic buys/plays video games the most (well, at least BEFORE Nintendo made the DS)

And Kancho is pretty wicked, but only when you have a long Japanese phrase preceding it. Also, gimme that rape simulator SNK is making ;)

Hey Aex, in your reading have you seen any stats on what percentage of American homes actually get HD content on their TVs? I know the 28% of homes having TVs is pretty accurate but I've seen wild stats anywhere from 60% all the way down to only 25% of those with an HDTV actually watch HD content on it (I thought I found a link earlier but now I can't find it). Something about the fact that a lot of HDTV buyers don't realize that they need more than just the TV to get HDTV. It makes you wonder how much that 28% means that people want HDTVs or just that they buy them because most nicer TVs just happen to be HD these days.

Oh, and yeah, kancho rules, well, not quite as much when you're the kanchee, as when you're the kanchor. :)

When's the FCC deadline requiring all broadcasts to go out in HD? 2009-2010?
subnet6's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/11/2007 22:15

There is no such deadline with regards to HD, only conversion to digital band transmission(which can include 480P). The cut off for digital broadcast is 2009. And it also doesn't effect cable or satellite providers, only over-the-air broadcasts. But it's been delayed 3 times from it's original deadline of 2006. The reason given to congress by the FCC is surprisingly slow sales of digital televisions.

C’mon, Niero...you know I think you’re awesome, but it’s “argument”, not “arguement”. “Argue” is one of those words that loses the ending “e” when you make it a noun — “judge” is another one (“judgment”, not “judgement”).

In case you guys were wondering, the specific date is February 17, 2009 (it’s a Tuesday). The FCC is helping that deadline along by mandating that all TVs include digital tuners — as of March 1, that has become the case (before then, it was only a requirement for TVs larger than 25"). An interesting loophole is that the mandate only applies to screens that can receive any form of broadcasting. So monitors (like, for example, HDTVs without HD tuners) — because they can’t receive any programming over the air — are completely exempt from this ruling.
