Nintendo's TGS 3DS press conference generates failure photo

[Update: According to the more financially savvy cats over at NeoGAF, Nintendo's stock dropped before the conference began, and it actually went back up to its prior levels shortly afterwards. So, while analysts and press seem unenthusiastic, the stock part is at least safe.]

Nintendo kicked off the Tokyo Game Show last night with a 3DS-centric press conference, hoping to boost the system's reputation and curry favor with press and public. It would appear that an hour of damp announcements and a NEW PINK COLOR had the opposite effect.

Negative press soon followed the conference, which failed to bring any megaton announcements, and as a result Nintendo's stock dropped by 5%. In addition, analysts have stated that the company failed to reignite any love from the masses, who have abandoned Nintendo for mobile phone games.

"I don't think the new games will make any difference," said Ichiyoshi Investment fund manager Mitsushige Akino. "Nintendo succeeded by pulling in people who weren't gamers and their needs now are no longer being filled by Nintendo, they are happy playing games on their mobile phones."

Reuters published an article titled, "Nintendo faces end of era after 3DS flop," conveying the general sentiment that the mainstream press seems to have. It would appear that, rather than get people more invested in the 3DS, Nintendo has succeeded only in turning them away. You can say what you like about the DS originally having a slow start ... it was never this big of a mess.

Since when do masses have to be flocking to another source if one isnt selling? Does it ever cross these analysts heads that maybe people arent buying shit just because they dont want what Nintendo's offering?

That's a damn shame. 3DS has a lot of potential, and a lot of games I find it hard to say no to. I hope it picks up, but the fact is, Nintendo's lost a LOT of business thanks to phone/iPod gaming. And with the infamous online system they have, it's tough to say they'll get gamer love back.

Just what is Nintendo's target audience anymore? Do we know?

Yup, casual gamers who never really cared about the deeper well of gaming can be a fickle bunch, eh? It's fucking ridiculous that Nintendo thinks all these "new gamers" who bought a Wii would stick with them and just keep buying all of Big N's newer stuff, when the kind of cheap and easy fluff that mobile OS's have to offer are exactly what they bought the Wii for in the first place. That's all Wii Sports was, after all - a bunch of mobile OS-style fluff bullshit. Now those people have gotten bored and moved on? SHOCKING!

Nintendo, meet your new roommate - Sega.

yeah, unless you're a monster hunter fan or a sissy little girl (or both) the only pertinent game news was that kid icarus is getting delayed.

However the good news in my eyes was that the eshop will eventually get an update. I'm really hoping that nintendo is, gradually, finally joining the 21st century in regards to software updates.

They'll be fine. I don't think the 3ds will be as successful as the DS considering how much the competition is showing Nintendo how to do it, but like plenty of people have said plenty of times, Nintendo will get a lot better once some games start coming out. Also as long as Nintendo has Pokemon under their belts, they can sell dozens of millions of 3DS systems right there.

I still wouldn't say it's a flop by a long shot, or even doing badly by a long shot. It sold 4.32 million by the end of July, and that's before the price cut which shot sales up 260%.

But the conference was horrible though, and the nub is just stupid.

Also, just because Nintendo isn't going to be on TGS it doesn't mean that 3rd parties won't announce games for 3DS,you know...

One of the problems I see is that the number of Nintendo fans, the ones who love Mario, Zelda and Metroid is not as big as the number of DS and Wii sales appears. So, the crowd who bought the Wii and DS because they were the cool thing is not a very loyal supporter. Shocking.

The fact is that Nintendo misread their sales as fans sales and not an occasional sale. Now those people are going after a new shining thing and Nintendo is left with their loyal fans, who are not that much by the number of Gamecubes sold.

@myosan8bit - Real gamers? How do you define that? People who keep paying for mario, zelda and pokemon over and over again for 25 years? LAWLZ. As for the angry birds players, those were the people that made Nintendo successful this time around. Too bad they don't give a shit about brand loyalty like you, so they won't come back for the 3DS or Wii-U. Get some ice for that butt-hurt.

I'm confused...

...did no one notice this was a Japan-centric event? They announced Monster Hunter 4 and New Love Plus, two of the biggest franchises in portable gaming there right now, and they didn't talk about the nub, like, at all there.

I would think that the drop in stock was because shareholders want Nintendo to announce new hardware and or going to mobile phones, which they didn't do.

...but I guess some people will chip on that tombstone 'till it gets used.

One game? ...... I suspect they want more than one game.

If they announced Monster hunter 4 was releasing TODAY it would probably be different but its at this point only a promise. You know at some point MH4 will come out and then the system will sell like hotcakes.... The 3DS is in what appears to be a perpetual holding pattern for a game to actually BE RELEASED that will make a difference.

It always interests me that analysts lump casual and hardcore gamers into the same categories when making these announcements, acting like hardcore gamers would be completely satisfied with the currently offerings of the iOS/Android markets. There's room in the world for both.

@myosan8bit - Yes, RLY! Love you too!

If you are so delusional as to think the Wii sold like gangbusters because of core gamers, then there is no helping you. They've moved on, and that #1 console sales spot isn't going to happen again with Wii-U. It's back to gamecube numbers for Big N.

@Pentagram - Seriously? Monster hunter? If we're talking global and not just the tiny little market of Japan, then MH is not the kind of series that can save an entire console generation. Metal Gear can do it, Halo can do it, and maybe Uncharted can do it. But MH? lol.. wow.

If only, I don't know, they'd release games that the hardcore crowd would want them to release to ensure their support... *cough* Operation Rainfall *cough*. See, without the hardcore to fall back on, the masses are a finicky bunch that follows whatever good and bad trends are popular (like "Twilight"...). You need to keep your core happy, because they're the ones that will stay with you... the masses never have and never will.

Honestly, the day that Nintendo drops out of the hardware business is probably the day that I lose my faith in gaming. I mean I love my PS3 and I... own a 360, but it's just not the same. Personally I think that mobile gaming on non-dedicated platforms is one of the worst things to happen to the industry. It's basically just flash games on the go. It can be fun, but now everyone uses the excuse "But I can do this on my phone, why get a console?" Hopefully the 3DS will just take the Gamecube's route and the Wii-U will really blow everyone away. Call me a Nintendofag, but I love my Wii. I love to play with my Wii. If I lost my own Wii I'd probably have to jack someone else's Wii. Without a Wii I'd be only half a man. Also, cocks.
