When you have that big a decline and your still pulling in that much money, you got nothing to worry about.


They still print money, just a little less money.but this might be a sign that Nintendo needs a little fresh blood in their franchises.

There are a couple factors here:

- They've seen such mad sales the last couple of years, it couldn't keep up forever. At a certain point, they have to reach saturation.

- Nintendo took a big gamble targeting non-traditional gamers. It's paid off HUGE in the short term. I worry about their long term success however. The mainstream is a fickle and easily distracted bunch. They're not really the demographic to build a business model around. There has to be a significant number of people that bought a Wii for Wii Sports and that's it. Nintendo isn't seeing any more revenue from those people and I don't think many of them would buy a Wii 2.

Finally time to give the hardcore audience what they want?

Revenue and profits might be down, but that's only really because they have been so massive by comparison in the past few years.

This will either call for the market revitalizing tactic of hardware revisions (likely) or creating software designed to give its current 'casual' audience a broader and deeper scope of gaming experiences, hopefully turning them into regular software purchasers (unlikely).

well, number doesn't lie. There is no going back. Console gaming born out of Nintendo died with Nintendo Wii. Nintendo should be in its own category. Call it Nintendof or put it under Toy. Put 360 and PS3 on their own category and call it a day and don't cover Nintendo as if it matters. Nintendo only matters b/c of the money earned from Wii.

Ever notice how Nintendo is covered differently than Microsoft and Sony? Typically, earnings reports for Nintendo focus on the loss of profit year on year, while reports for Microsoft and Sony typically de-emphasize that their gaming divisions are in the red. Even at a 59% drop in profit, Nintendo still obviously made quite a bit more money than the Xbox 360 did this year, but the half-decade that the xbox was in the red was never reported as seriously as a drop in Nintendo's profits.
