Nintendo's new $141 million facility for R&D photo

What is Nintendo working on? Come on, you should know by now that they never say. No one ever really knows until their poorly named, insanely popular consoles hit the market.

So who knows that they'll be doing in their new research and development facility that they just dropped ¥12.8 billion ($141.9m) for. The new site is right near their current offices in Kyoto, Japan. It is here that Nintendo will work on new software for their current platforms as well as new game consoles.

I wonder what the team that created the DS and Wii are making next. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that new building.

It'll be called Wii Wii, or the DS nuts. hopefully they're working on a HD system... Way to pay attention to the times, Nintendo! your "Next gen" system doesn't even do games at 720p. What you you thinking?! You make me want to facepalm!

In Atastysammich World, this would be the studio dedicated solely to continuing the Game & Watch Gallery series, until they finished up the backcatalog. None of this half-assed Collection crap we've been getting on the DS, either.

I can tell you exactly why they made the Wii with only 480P, because HDTVs has not reached a majority of households yet. When the released the Wii, less than 15% of US households owned an HDTV. From a strictly business point of view, why would you appeal to an audience that only has a max potential of 15 of American households? You don't. You capitalize on what you're good at (making solid family friendly games) and pump out a new system with a catchy name on the cheapest/most reliable hardware you possibly can.

As for this new R&D facility; I think now that HDTVs are gaining a lot more momentum and the components required to make an HD console have dropped significantly, the next Nintendo console will most likely be HD, will no doubt have a hard drive and will still look like it was made by Apple.

Hmm. This sounds like a stretch, but does anyone find it odd how Nintendo announces the construction of a new department at about the same time Atlus reveals the existence of a supercomputer at their headquarters?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that new building.

Ironically, "Fly on the Wall" is the name of the new game they're developing there.

If I was a fly on the wall in the new building I would be selling company secrets left and right.

Yeah what the hell were they thinking? They're only outselling the competition by 2:1. So why wouldn't they make a more expensive HD system just so they could sell less systems like Sony, and Microsoft are now? What were you thinking Nintendo? What were you thinking?

PEICanada7: The point is that they made an extremely underpowered system and overcharged for it without producing any games for people who actually like games.

That's all good and well if you're Nintendo, but for the rest of us we might like to see something worth turning the thing on for. Just because a ton of people buy something doesn't mean that it's good. You'd have to be a small child or an idiot to believe that.
