A ShackNews interview with Bethesda reveals that the company wanted to bring Elder Scrolls Oblivion to the Wii, but the system obviously doesn't have enough under the hood to support the game. This is unfortunate, as the control scheme might have contributed to quite a work out when level grinding. Peter Hines also gives insight as to how the company views rolling out its games on multiple platforms:
Our philosophy has always been that we don't believe in trying to design the game for a platform. Our philosophy is to [decide] what game we want to make, then determine which platforms can run that game ... It's not really going to run on a Wii for example, but if it could we would put it there.
Our philosophy is to make a game and make it available to as many people as possible. We're not looking to limit who can play a game. We want to make something that's fun and we want as many people as possible to play it.
Sound familiar? It should -- another interview with Epic reveals that its next projects will all be centric to the Unreal Engine 3, which also is not coming to the Wii. Once again, this brings around the age old question: is the Wiimote controller enough to carry the console? I'm not sure, but as they say: Where there is smoke, there is fire. Yes, at the end of the day it is all about the games, but when studios are shying away from making games for your console because of its limitations, we have a burning problem that smells a lot like a GameCube reprise.

"Hey, we're in that space! Red Steel, Splinter Cell -- those use our previous engine technology. There's a Brothers in Arms game as well. there will be quite a few games on the Wii that we get a little involvement from us. But it's not in our plans to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. It's really designed for next-gen, high-definition. One of our licensees has been porting it, and they might be successful at that, and that would be great if they do it. It's doable, but not something that we're going to focus on."
So maybe we will some UE3 action on the Wii, sure it will lack a lot of the frosting, but it could still be a great thing.
*wink, wink, nudge, nudge Ninty
I don't want ports of old games, I want new games that are designed for the Wii's new control model.
That makes me a saaad panda.
Think how cool it would be having a first person game like that in where the sword and other weapons were controlled via the Wiimote, unfortunetly thats all we can do.
So, honestly I don't care if someone can't port a game to it or not. If I was looking for Johnny-Come-Lately ports, I would've bought a PS3.
I want original game content that blows me away with interface design. So far, I've got a golf game that plays like golf. An adventure game where swinging the Wii-mote swings a sword, Wario Ware, and, oh, my entire childhood video game collection. On one box. I'm happy with my purchase and my decision. If the 3rd parties don't want to ride the 4 million consoles sold Wii gravy train, then that's their problem. Nintendo will be here either way. I think publishers saw with the DS that Nintendo is serious about supporting their tech backwards ideas and focusing more on making gaming fun again. The result?
Shit like Hotel Dusk or Castlevania:PoR. FFIII? Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright? I think third parties will get this idea a lot faster on the Wii and we'll get what we want. Nintendo had to bust some balls this time around to prove themselves worthy based on gameplay alone, and they've done well.
Fuck.
Anyways in a year I dont think all these developers are passing up on the Wii because of the graphics. I mean, there wont be that many ports from the 360/ps3, and thats why (niero) we bought 3 systems. Developers will make NEW games for the Wii because of its graphics, and thats what im excited about. These minigames though, that shit wont cut it.
I'm sure I'll play Mario for that month or so, and then it's back in the closet for ye olde Wii.
(sigh) I just want Smash Bros.. thats what I bought it for, and if they fuck that up, I'll trade in my Wii for a N-gage2.
(ok maybe that's a little harsh)
That excuse just sounds lazy to me.
"We're making a game we can port to the two most similar systems."
That's I'll I hear.
In other news: I am losing my mind.
i remember a portable called the ds.........
I agree with that stance too. There is a lack of games for it now, but that's been the case forever. Late winter, early spring is always a doldrum for games cause everybody blows their wad for the holiday shopping season. Microsoft had the same problems the spring after the release of the 360 and the PS3 is having the same issue.
Seriously though, Harmonica Hero is gonna be awesome. Just look at how much that beta-tester is enjoying it.
(just in case I can't afford Harmonica Hero)
you may be right
i have been drinking too much
Thanks for translating what i was saying in readable english
@ Bahamut_Zero, I really hope that these 1G games suffer from being GC titles that got ported up. None have even looked as good as RE4 yet.
why would a prostitute have good lung capacity? niero you do know that a "blowjob" doesn't actually involve blowing, at least in my experience
I think alot of people have flat out lost sight of what the point is, FUN.
All this HD bullshit means nothing to me. I play games because they entertain me, not because they have shiny shaders.
If somone would actually step up and make a great game with the Wii, instead of diving into the pissing contest that is the 360 and PS3, we would see what the system is able to do.
But this time, it's not Nintendo turning away 3rd party developers, its them, that want to get what they consider a larger installed base. Once again the all mighty dollar wins.
Riiiiight. So, where's the PC port of GoW then?
I'll never forgive Epic for making me buy an XBox just to play it :(
Learn to hold a fucking camera.
There, I said it.
I don't get the party system statement. At all.
This news is hilarious. I was wondering how long it would take for a developer so say this.
I've been playing my Wii most of all, but that's just me.
360 is finally starting to get a pretty good library. I expect by this time next year, so will the Wii and even the PS3 should have a few good ones by then. It's a good time to be a gamer, especially if you have a little extra money to have more than one system.
However, the console space functions a bit differently and I think that userbase is a big factor. How long can any developer really deny a large userbase? The PS2 had weaker hardware than both the Xbox and the Gamecube but that didn't stop developers from flocking to it and staying with it. The same is happening with the DS. With the escalating costs of development, at some point a large install base is going to become very attractive.
In the case of the Wii, you've got a quickly growing userbase without a steady stream of AAA titles to satiate players quite yet. The fact that you have a large base of players hungry to play games for the system is attractive to any developer and it seems that developers like Take Two and Square Enix are cognizant of that fact.
What it comes down to is exclusives. A system is built on exclusives. And if the userbase continues to grow do you honestly think that developers are going to ignore the Wii? Sure, some developers with the PC mindset might, but most console developers won't be thinking about picking the best platform that can handle their engine but rather which console's strengths to best utilize so they can take advantage of the userbase.
This isn't a game design argument, this is a factual observation about what 3rd party studios are choosing to do. The Wii will have less games because it isn't HD; that's all there is to take away from it.
Or maybe a Shenmue type of game where you can manipulate the world around you. The problem is, I don't see many of these games in the pipeline. Every other console after its launch had those future games I was dying to play. I don't see that for the Wii. I'm not really looking forward to Metroid, ssb, and mario. I feel like I've been there, done that.
"This isn't a game design argument, this is a factual observation about what 3rd party studios are choosing to do. The Wii will have less games because it isn't HD; that's all there is to take away from it."
At the same time though, you have companies pulling exclusives from the PS3 despite the fact that it is a powerful, HD-capable platform. You've got other developers announcing more titles for the Wii. Sure, a lot of them are ports, but who didn't expect that? I'm guessing that a lot of companies took a wait and see approach with the Wii and as it's been picking up steam, they're wanting to make a presence while developing projects solely for the Wii. So you get a lot of ports to gauge interest from the userbase.
And I wouldn't necessarily put too much stock in the opinions of graphic engine developers. If you asked them to list PC specs they'd prefer to design for, I'd give you dollars to donuts that they are aiming for specs higher than what current PC's can handle. It's the nature of the beast.
And I'm sure we will see an improvement on the graphics as time goes by...it will never come close to the graphics of the others, but, at least for me (and probably many people out there) that doesnt really matter.
So, the Super Nintendo blew away the Genesis. The N64 blew away the Playstaion. The Gamecube blew away the PS2. Now that the Wii is out, graphics don't matter? Did technology, effort, and quality suddenly become passé, or something?
