Because they're stubborn, and they have enough Wii Fit money and DS Lite money to last a long while.
Its called dilution. Why buy a $40 3DS Mario game when you can buy a $5 iPhone Mario game? Unless smartphones start annihilating the handheld market, it'd make Nintendo a TON of money on the short run (see: SquareEnix porting Final Fantasy games to the iPad) but it would kill the company in the long run.
Porting old games to touch devices never works, and those asking for Mario on their iPhones are retards blinded by iPhone mania, really.
New, exclusive games, then? Way to piss off your consumers by asking them to buy a smartphone to play your games.
Angry Birds money is chump change to Nintendo. Getting into that space would be the stupidest move ever.
Because those devs arent trying to sell smartphones.
This game is .99c
It's also extremely high in quality.
@Pandareaus
Angry Birds sold over 200 million. That's JUST Angry Birds 1.0 - not Seasons, or Rio.
That's chump change? From what I can see based on sales figures, that's twice what Kirby's Epic Yarn made in total.
That's sizable, and I can easily see why investors would suggest cornering this market. Even if the investors are just talking about Brain Age iOS or some shit, it doesn't matter; people think "Mario", and they think that's all Nintendo is. Investors could easily just mean they want to put out the next "Wii Fit" for phones, or the like. They just want money.
@ people who think Nintendo apps are a good idea... why don't we also just demand ALL game companies make ONLY iphone/android apps?
Because I think Uncharted would be much better if it was less beutiful, had less interesting gameplay, and cost only 2$
Stupid move all around. you could dump all of the old shit onto as many outlets as possible... or you could slowly let your name brand fall apart and devalue itself.
If Nintendo takes their software to other platforms people are going to stop buying their hardware, upon which they have been making bucket loads of money for decades. Soon after that they'll lose the ability to produce hardware, since no one will be buying it as it's less powerful and the Nintendo games people will be available elsewhere.
Before anyone knows it Nintendo will be a third-party developer like Sega, without the ability to directly influence the hardware upon which their games are played.
I've been sick of Nintendo's hardware designs for a long, long time, so I wouldn't mind this coming to pass. But I can't imagine a future that the Nintendo executives would hate more than to be a third-party developer for other people's hardware. They love the control (and profit) far too much.
Also, nothing will crush the emulator market.
If people wanted to have these games (most of them, anyway) legitimetly, then they would.
Smartphones are already annihilating the handheld market. Kids don't want the 3DS or PSP... they want an iPhone or Android device. They want that do-it-all gadget that all the adults have.
Anecdotally, my friend's kid will literally toss his DS on the floor and beg me to use my iPhone. I wince everytime I see him abuse his DS... I remember treating my games like they were faberge egg when I was 7.
Nintendo is in big trouble. They posted a $327 million dollar loss first quarter this year and I expect to see a similar loss posted for the rest of the fiscal year. Smartphones, lack of games and expensive games are clearly the reason why the 3DS is tanking. Why the fuck should I pay $39.99 for a game when I can get one of equal/higher quality, with better graphics on my iPhone often for 99c (or free if you're patient)?
I'd hate to see Ninty go down in flames, after all, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be a gamer right now. But that's honestly where I see them headed if they stay their current course. Nintendo needs to adapt before the rug is pulled out from the completely.
Check your facts, Angry Birds didn't sell 200 million. It got downloaded 200 million times, maybe, but it did not sell 200 million times at $0.99.
For a select few, .99 cents works fine and actually makes money. For everyone else? That model is not profitable, and it won't be long for the vast majority of mobile phone developers to start selling games at a relatively higher price.
Also, buttons fucking rule, add-ons that frankenstein buttons on to iPhones don't.
Nintendo may be having problems they need to cave into right now, but caving and making cell phone games isn't something they should be adding to their problems.

How dare Nintendo not release their games on competing hardware? How dare they not spend that development money software for their own hardware with an uncertain future? They should take a note from Microsoft how they made Halo 3 a multiplatform release, or how Sony is releasing Uncharted 3 for Xbox and PC.
It's because they're a stubborn greedy company that only cares about money. Just because they've created these franchises and have been developing and publishing these games for decades doesn't give them rights to choose what to do with these games. How dare they be so arrogant to believe they can only develop games for their own consoles?
Nintendo only cares about money it's not like Iwata just cut his salary in half, it's not like they spend many years developing Zelda games to make sure they're up to quality. It's not like the company quote is " A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." It's not like they're making sequels to games that most never thought would happend like Luigi's Mansion 2, Sin and Punishment 2, & Kid Icarus Uprising.
Nintendo only cares about money that's why they chose they develop full fledged quality games for their consoles with precise controls, instead of making cheap cash grabs for an all touch screen device with virtual dpads and buttons that are not capable of the precision they're looking for.
Nintendo is a disgusting greedy company that does not care about videogames. Nearly all of their videogames are critically panned it's not like Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been called the greatest 3D platformer of all time by many people. No Nintendo games are of the worst quality the only reason their fanbase buys their games is because they're sheep who will buy anything with the Mario or Zelda name plastered on it.
Nintendo is an awful company. They make games that are safe for children. Children are the bane of the existence of this planet, and they certainly aren't the future. It's not like I was a child once, it's not like my love for videogames grew from the hours I spend playing Pokemon and a Link to the Past over and over again. Children don't deserve to play videgames because they are strictly for adults and are an artform.
Nintendo should die, it's not like they repopularized Video-games with the NES, or that the Wii broke barriers and changed the perspective people had on gamers no longer labeling us anti-social people who don't have a proper grasp of reality. Nintendo is an awful company that has never innovated anything all they do is provide a bunch of awful worthless gimmicks that cheapen the name of videogames.
Everyone who works for Nintendo should get onto a bus and drive themselves into a volcano. Who cares if they make games for the casual, child, retro-gamer, and niche gamer audience I don't fall into those categories so that means they shouldn't exist.
Wait no wait, I forgot I actually do like some Nintendo games. So I don't want them to disappear entirely, yeah. They should become a third part developer that's a great idea. Instead of wishing death on the company I want them suffer a horrible crash and come out crippled, that's totally not selfish of me, that way I won't have to buy one of their useles hunks of plastic they call hardware.
Yeah Nintendo should become third party because that worked out so amazingly for Sega, and Atari. Everyone knows that Sega and Atari are the most respected developers in videogames right now. Sega becoming third party was such a great Idea We've had so many yearly high quality games, and those sequels to Shenmue, Ristar, and Jet Set Radio were so good. Sega is so rich right now too they can afford to take risks andlocalize all of their games. Playing English versions of Valkyria Chronicles 3, and the Yakuza PSP games have made me so happy.
Seriously who care about Nintendo? They're not unique, they've never contributed anything important to videogames, and all of their games are of terrible quality. Having them just disappear would not be a significant lose to the videogame industry. Diversity is a terrible thing. Nintendo should just submit and get absorbed by Apple like Microsoft and Sony. Developing games for a button less console is the best thing they could have hopped for, in fact they're lucky that we're so considerate that we think it's okay for them to develop mobile games. Especially considering there isn't some stigma amongst gamers that mobile games are a waste of time. No we consider mobile games to be the highest quality of videogames and Nintendo should be lucky that we deem them worthy of developing for phones.
iOS fans are batshit insane.
Make a 2D Mario game and put it on the 3DS. Then make another 2D Mario game, except this one only lasts for one World and is an hour or two long, and put it on Mobile devices for $5. People who don't have a 3DS get to play it for a while and get teased at the end and now they might get tempted to go and get one with a full Mario adventure.
Even if Nintendo doesn't want to undermine their current handheld games, that doesn't mean they can't sell bite-sized games Dead Rising 2: Case Zero style on mobiles. They make money, and mobile gamers might be encouraged to go out and get a 3DS.
How dare you steal my idea for my next blog post.
Also, why is no one pressuring Sony and Microsoft to make mobile phone games? I have an idea but I want to hear others first.
Infinity Blade, Dungeon Huner 1/2, Rimelands, Fargoal, Dungeon Raid, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride, Death Rally, Spider, Solomon's Keep, Space Miner, Sword & Sworcery, PvZ...
Shall I go on? All of those games at one point or another were 99c or free... all very excellent games. Can the 3DS run the Unreal 3 Engine? iPhone sure can.
I'm not batshit insane, I like good games and there's plenty to be had on the cheap. The Destructoid community at large has an irrational hatred of iOS games.
I'm also a Nintendo gamer, I've owned every console and at least one iteration of each handheld (although no 3DS yet).
I agree with Iwata. The backbone of the Nintendo brand is their inhouse IP's. I don't think their shareholders are looking past the short-term gain releasing games on competing platforms would provide.
Maybe I'll check out the 3DS and or the WiiU at some point in the future after they have pricedropped some (in the case of the 3DS some more) and their respective zelda/metroid games have been physically released. Not just promised as some vague on the horizon thing.
I still love you Nintendo .... but I think we should umm .... see other consoles....
Actually, no. They're not. Most analysts who say the iPhone is "killing" the handheld market are comparing watermelons to oranges. If you combined the sales of all PC hardware components and compared them to all dedicated video game hardware sales, "PC gaming" would annihilate "console gaming" but you don't see analysts saying that "PC gaming is killing console gaming!"
Smartphones are a serious competitor but expecting smartphones to replace dedicated handheld gaming devices is the same kind of doomsday soothsaying PC gamers have had to put up for over a decade now. Remember when the Xbox was supposed to kill PC gaming cause Microsoft was buying up developers and forcing them to develop on consoles? How about how more people CoD users play on consoles than PC? Or how constantly rising PC system requirements would drive customers away from PC gaming.
The sky is not falling, get over it.
Sine they're OBVIOUSLY the better company, you should go bug them right? /sarcasm
