Nintendo's Iwata on 3DS's final price photo

There's no official price for Nintendo's 3DS yet, but we do know a bit more that could help us land a closer guess. A VentureBeat interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata tells us that they won't be selling the console for less than production cost. Of course. But it also says that the production price for the 3DS is more than the DS. Of course.

"What I can confirm is that, in terms of the production costs, it will cost more than the costs for the Nintendo DS today," he said.

Put those together and you can get a rough idea. The original DS was $150 at launch. How much do you think the addition of a spanking new 3D screen tech is going to add to that? that's not even counting the 3 cameras, accelerometers and bump in processing power.

Iwata said "we believe we will produce enough value worthy of the production cost." So, how much is this thing worth to you? $250? $200? $169.99?

I think it's a little dumb if nintendo can't sell a system for a little bit of a loss at first. Especially condsidering the loss won't last too long. I want this really bad, but I think I'll wait for 3ds lite to come out if it costs too much at launch

I'm guessing $200 - 250. We'll say...$230. You read it here first!

@ Ilort het - Unlike Sony/MS, Nintendo doesn't produce a variety of other products where they make bank on. Games/hardware are all they have - selling at a loss for something they know will sell like crazy isn't really smart for them.

Because they haven't ever had to before. There is still a chance of the 3DS failing (though clearly not much of one) and if they make sure they make a profit on units sold, that greatly lowers their risk.

Anyways, this could go for up to 200 and be an absolutely gigantic, world changing device. Launching it for more than that risks the enormity of the potential of the product.

I think $199 is the sweet spot for this handheld. Especially in this economy, I think people are going to have a hard time swallowing anything greater than $200 (that two really makes a big psychological difference) and $250 may be suicide.

I'm thinking $200 is where I draw the line, but I'm probably kidding myself. I'll pay whatever they want. $150-$200 feels good to me though.

I'd pay... probably up to $250. Any more would be pushing it, and they'd have to release even better games at the start than what they've announced.

Personally I would pay up to 250 at launch. I do think 200 would be the sweet spot for them though. If and they want soccer moms to buy it at launch, and I'm sure they do.

I think 180 sounds right, but I agree with the idea of it costing 199.99. The moment it passes 200.00 I've got a hard time considering it. Because any cost for the damn thing doesn't account for the fact that I need to put down more money on games for it.

He said than DS costs 'today'. What does a DS cost today? I'm gonna guess around 175USDs, not that it matters since I'm in Europe and will probably get it much higher.

I would be surprised if it was over the $200 mark, but I can see it being priced similarly to the DSiXL.

Of course, even it is makes it over the 200 mark I am still going to buy myself one.

Wait, Iwata was just being Captain Obvious. He said "it will cost more than the costs for the Nintendo DS today" which clasify this statement for the image. Of course it will, it is a newer tech, which is always more expenseive than older tech. Considering the 170$ price tag on the DSi, this will be around the 200$.

Well a standard DS lite is currently priced at $129.99 USD, a DSi at $169.99, and the DSi XL at $189.99

I'm thinking $199.99 as well, and from the looks of it anything over that is the point at which people will reconsider purchasing one.

Course I'm gonna buy one regardless. 3D STAR FOX!!!!!!!

For what is essentially a system more powerful than the wii, portable, with an interesting 3d screen that works. $250 is fair, $200 would sell gang busters.

Make it a multi-functional device, and give me a digital audio output and i'll pay $500. That is my dream, a portable device capable of going through a portable dac/amp for portable music. Plus awesome gaming, and video functionality. It is a pipe dream I know ;)

I can tell you that it's not going to be more than $200. I'm thinking more than $150.
How do I think that? Well, for one, I think they are making at least $50 profit off of every DS, including DSi and DSXL. I think the 3DS costs $100 to make, and then add their $50 profit. At most I think it will cost $170, but I don't see that happening.

considering how much value i've gotten out of my DS over the years and some of the cool games coming out for this thing, i'd definitely pay 199 for it. anything more than that and it would become a question of launch titles available determining if it was a day one purchase or not.

The cost of the camera(s) makes me think 250, but the screen sizes are so conservative that a $199 might be doable.

PLease be at the most $200. If not, I'll have a hard time wrapping my mind around the 200+ price tag of the system PLUS all of the games I want for it on launch day.

I'd say it's not gonna be less than $299. Near-Wii graphics, 3D screen, touch screen, cameras and all. That costs. I'll buy it regardless of price especially that it's fully backwards compatible with current DS games.

While $169.99 would be awesome(duh) I doubt that(duh, again)it will be that low.
$199.99 would get a lot of people to buy it but it seems too low for it.
$229.99 - I could see it around that price. Not too steep and not too low.
$249.99 might turn some people off (but then again it's Nintendo and a lot of people have faith in the company) because it's a portable at that price. (yea, Sony did this though, I can't remember but I think that was the PSP price)
Also parentheses errors in my post I'm sure...

Video game companies sell the hardware at a loss and make bank on the software liscencing. Isn't that how it has always been? maybe not but that's what it seemed like. Nintendo consoles have always been a good price up until the wii, which was way overpriced for a gamecube with motion control. They just sold it so expensive because they know it's going to sell.

$250 or under I would consider reasonable. Although depending on the launch line-up I might be willing to consider an unreasonable price.

But then again, what if people get turned off by the fact that the home console costs less than the portable? I mean, isn't the standard wii $199?

I won't buy it at launch if it costs more than $200. Just saying. I can't see myself paying as much for a handheld as I would for a console (current pricing). That said, I was never an early adopter and would like any release issues to be resolved before I drop any sizable sum of money on making this purchase.

@ Operative20 / Scarlatch - It's a sign of the times, I think. We're starting to move into an age where the handhelds won't be so dramatically weaker than the consoles. Refusing to pay $200+ "because it's a handheld" is kind of a silly thing to do.

Not sure if you guys own smart phones or iPod Touches/iPads/whatnot, but those devices have got away with being $200+ for a while now.

I'd go for it as long as it's between $150 and $200. Anything over $200 and I'm out. Regardless of the tech involved, there's no way I could bring myself to pay more than $200 for a handheld. And, honestly, even that is pushing it. That's one of the reasons I'll never buy a new PSP. It's just TOO expensive at $200. When a handheld has the same price as your top of the line console, you have a problem.

Let's not forget that nintendo is a fucking beast with money hangin out it's ass, so the price point comes out too how low their investors will go. Nintendo knows this will be big and there will be tons of people buying so they aren't worried about their investment do much so they might surprise us all by having it well under 200$ as their wii system is 149-199 and the dsi around 120-140 safe to say the price will be a medium of those prices.

I'm not paying as much as a Wii for it, but I will pay almost anything under that. I dunno if the console is worth it or anything, but I really want this thing.
