Nintendo's always innovating

10:30 AM on 09.07.2011   |   Jim Sterling

Nintendo's always innovating photo

With the announcement of the extra 3DS nub add-on, Nintendo has worked out a way to patch consoles. We thought you could only do that with software, but once again, the game industry's disruptive force has shown us something we never thought possible.

Just when you thought the patch culture that's grown up around this generation's games couldn't get sillier, it's now happening with hardware, and gamers get to pay for the privilege! It seems that rushing out a product to meet deadlines and then fixing it later isn't just for games, and since Nintendo can charge for this update, it's even more awesome.

So congratulations again to Nintendo, for its amazing innovations in the field of handheld gaming and its contributions toward making this industry a sloppier, lazier place ... because it really needed help in that department!

Oh ... and that nub looks fucking retarded.

Yeah I'm not liking that nub. Hopefully it doesn't start to become mandatory for all games.

It reminds me of the Genesis. They're just gonna stack addon upon addon to the 3DS until it's successful.

It's the Mega Drive in reverse, that was successful BEFORE the add-ons.

It does, that's why it's probably a stop-gap measure.

This just reeks of an excuse to bring out a new "3DS lite" with the second analogue nub built in. This way Nintendo can hold their hands up and say "Well people who own the original 3DS can still play games optimized for the new model!

I'm not surprised. Nintendo's ALWAYS done stuff like this. I seem to be the only one who LIKES my 3DS, but I can completely understand why people are becoming frustrated. I'm preparing for the inevitable redesign that's going to make my $250 system obsolete and ultimately force me to buy the so-called 3DS Lite that's sure to come way too soon. We'll see what happens.

Now I'm more and more glad I didn't grab a 3DS. The PSVita on the other hand is sounding sexier by the minute with all the games announced (e.g. Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Dragon's Crown, Escape Plan, Little Deviants, Persona 4 remake, etc.)

Would be interesting if this generation of handhelds if Sony and Nintendo switched places. Still unlikely but maybe.

Im not too bothered by this. Atleast they havent announced a replacement handheld. Plus, if it works with the games that its compatible with, what is the problem?

I'd return my 3DS right now if I didn't lose my receipt. This is bullshit. I can't believe I have to not only pay for something to make my system look retarded but completely lose the point of my charging cradle as well.

Guys.. settle down. This thing is pretty much rumored for 1 single game at this point. And if it's required, it's probably going to be a pack in, anyway.

Limited use specialty controllers are really nothing new and have never been a big deal. If you hate it that much, just find a way to go on with your life having never played 3ds Monster Hunter.

Next up: physical DRM! You will get a 4-piece keychain that will be required to actually turn the system on and it magically breaks when you trade the console in.

At least the 3DS doesn't have 500 versions of the same system out before they made a new system with two nubs unlike the PSP.

@smoger If you dont think that devs will jump onto being able to use 2 nubs after they make it built in on the next 3DS upgrade, then you're more hopeful than me... I'm beginning to think of the 3DS as the pspgo: a complete fucking waste of my money. Bring on PSVita!

@aFFe: but you don't, is the thing. your 3ds isn't going to stop working because an accessory came out for it.

and if you want to play the game the accessory is for, you'll probably get it for free or the game might cost 5 or 10 bucks more than "usual". so what's the big deal?

Oh Nintendo, this will probably only work for one game and one game only. Kinda remind you of something, oh yeah. The Wii Speak add-on that only worked for one, maybe two games. AND NOTHING ELSE!

Well done, I can definitely see Wii U working for you guys.

Peoples over reactions to this amaze me.
The negetive attitude surrounding this reveal is a great example of what's really wrong with Nintendo: that there are snipers aimed at their heads from all angles constantly.
If you don't like them, fine. but your bitching and "funny" articles won't fix anything. In fact, you might just end up ruining it for the rest of us with one of those pop shots.
by the way, any spelling errors are a result of lack of sleep.

Well I figured there would be a 3DSliteiXL whatever in the coming future (probably next fall/winter). The DS only had a year and a half between the original fat one and then the lite, so that would make some sense. however adding additional things that could change game play and possibly force people to buy the new one, is a bit frustrating. but then again everyone asked for that with the PSP and would have been overjoyed by it if Sony had redesigned the system to include a second nub stick.. so whatever. I like my 3DS and will probably buy the redesigned one with an extra circle pad, because I like new things. sigh.

I, for one, welcome our new nubbin overlords.

Seriously, though, I doubt this is mandatory. Capcom often does special stuff for Monster Hunter games. They released a PSP in Japan with a special analog stick designed for long bouts of playing MH. And, having played MH on the PSP a little, I can see how this would make it much more playable. Seriously, I was basically throwing up gang signs just trying to change the camera.

And as far as the Motion Plus argument goes, how many games have required it? Nintendo didn't require it for Kirby's Epic Yarn or DK Country, right? How about Monado, Xenoblade or The Last Story? I am actually asking about those.

Then again, Nintendo's been weird recently, so who knows.

i really don't get all the hate this circle pad accessory gets. it won't be required to play games. it's simillar to racing wheels, flight sticks or fighting sticks for consoles - it's for hardcore fans and/or gamers with cash who want more authentic feel/deeper experience. you don't see everyone getting 150-200$ fighting sticks to play Tekken do you? 99% of people are fine with normal controller.

1st of all the 3ds hasn't even been out all that long (not even a year?) so they couldn't revise it just yet. 2nd of all, its still technically a DS which has also gone through a ton of revisions and only recently added only ONE nub with the 3DS, something the psp had since when, 2005?

Any word on if it adds battery life? That would make it infinitivelly more acceptable.
