Debuting this holiday with Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Nintendo unveiled its new line of Skylanders-like NFC toys, amiibo, during its E3 digital event today. Confirmed titles include Smash Bros and Skylanders, and these will work "only for Nintendo systems."

It sounds like these figures will introduce RPG mechanics in Super Smash Bros., allowing you to train and customize your characters. With enough effort, you might even be able to finally best your unbeatable friends with the help of amiibo.

Each figure has a special chip inside, and it will be recognized on any Wii U using the built-in NFC technology. More details on that and other games that will make use of the technology, like Mario Kart 8, soon.

A peripheral is coming next year that allows amiibo to be used on Nintendo 3DS.

Super Smash Bros. causes surge in Wii U sales in Japan

The Japanese market certainly loves its handheld devices, but for at least one week, a console game is king. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was the top selling title in Japan this week, moving 227,527 units in the first few...more

This Lucina figure is looking pretty damn great

Japan is getting an amazing Figma figure next year -- Lucina from Fire Emblem: Awakening. It's up for pre-order now from retailers like AmiAmi, and it'll drop in April 2015. I think I'm going to have the mask on permanently -- it looks too cool. Of course, this figure makes me lament the fact that Lucina doesn't have a mask-variant costume in Smash Bros.more

Smash Bros. may continue without creator Masahiro Sakurai

Masahiro Sakurai, who brought us endless chipper Miiverse updates and, indeed, Super Smash Bros. itself, finally seems burnt out. According to CVG, Sakurai told Game Informer in an interview, "I can't positively declare ...more

Nintendo is looking into Smash Bros. related Wii U error codes

Super Smash Bros. might be a major hit for Nintendo, but a small number of people are having some issues with a few specific error codes on the Wii U. 160-0103 and 160-1710 may occur when players are engaging in the "For...more

How is amiibo functionality a few weeks in?

My initial amiibo assessment was after roughly one week of testing. Within one day I trained a few toys to the max level of 50, fed them a few items, and was pretty underwhelmed. Two weeks later and I'm still a bit underwhelm...more

Take a cue from Mario Tennis to pick a Smash Bros. main

Newcomers to Smash Bros. might find the Wii U version to be a bit daunting. There are almost fifty characters, most considerably different from one another. Even seasoned Smash players have wildly differing opinions whe...more

Which Smash Bros. character do you think is the most competitive?

I've been spending a lot of time with Rosalina in Smash Bros. I've been interested in her before the game was released as I like the character quite a bit, and Luma sweetened the deal. After an extended amount of play, I...more

Smash Bros. is the USA's fastest-selling Wii U game

Nintendo sent a boastful little email our way this morning, touting Super Smash Bros. as the fastest-selling Wii U game ever. At least so far as the United States is concerned, anyway. Americans purchased more than 490,000 un...more

Street Fighter V being exclusive might not be the worst thing ever

Ok, yes we all hate third-party exclusives. It's especially grating for a franchise as venerable and well loved as Street Fighter. This is a raw deal for the world warriors out there who have already plunked down money on an ...more
