Debuting this holiday with Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Nintendo unveiled its new line of Skylanders-like NFC toys, amiibo, during its E3 digital event today. Confirmed titles include Smash Bros and Skylanders, and these will work "only for Nintendo systems."

It sounds like these figures will introduce RPG mechanics in Super Smash Bros., allowing you to train and customize your characters. With enough effort, you might even be able to finally best your unbeatable friends with the help of amiibo.

Each figure has a special chip inside, and it will be recognized on any Wii U using the built-in NFC technology. More details on that and other games that will make use of the technology, like Mario Kart 8, soon.

A peripheral is coming next year that allows amiibo to be used on Nintendo 3DS.

Pokémon ORAS, Amiibo, Smash Bros. out in Europe

Today is a good day, European Nintendo fans. Or maybe a not so great one for your wallet. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and the first dozen Amiibo figures all arrive in Europe star...more

Smash Bros. is the USA's fastest-selling Wii U game

Nintendo sent a boastful little email our way this morning, touting Super Smash Bros. as the fastest-selling Wii U game ever. At least so far as the United States is concerned, anyway. Americans purchased more than 490,000 un...more

This Super Smash kitten is simply adorable

Jonathan introduced this video of a kitten occasionally pawing at Super Smash Bros. by saying, "It's the least newsworthy news ever newsed, but it will make people happy to watch." Indeed, I had just come off a last-round de...more

Lose your head, keep your cool with bizarre Smash Bros. glitch

Elite fighting game competitors have to be able to perform even under the wackiest of circumstances. Fox lose his head? King Dedede's eyes look like he's taken enough psychedelic drugs for a lifetime? Better nail that dash-d...more

PSA: The Smash Bros. Wii U Club Nintendo voucher is behind the cover art

This is a pretty strange PSA but I know someone is going to go on a Twitter rant after they crack open their new copy of Super Smash Bros. Wii U, so here goes. I don't know about you all, but one of the first things...more

Sakurai: Ridley as a playable Smash Bros. fighter 'wouldn't be Ridley any longer'

Super Smash Bros. fans are all about Ridley, and I get it. The Metroid character would be cool to play as, but it's just not happening. Not this time. Speaking to IGN, director Masahiro Sakurai laid out why: "...if we made Ri...more

No Smash Bros. DLC after Mewtwo 'experiment'

Mewtwo is coming to Super Smash Bros. next spring, but Masahiro Sakurai explained to IGN that, "releasing that character is an experiment meant to act as a foothold in content distribution; thus it's simply meant as part of t...more

The only awkward, live-action, gory Smash Bros. video you need today

Are you excited for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? You should be. Chris "Barack Obama" Carter says it's 9.5 good. That's not 9.5 out of like 3 billion. That's 9.5 out of 10. Some people that are certainly appropriately enthused for Smash Bros. are the ones in this video. I don't really have words for what's going on, so I'll let the clip speak for itself. more

Here's how you unlock everything in Smash Bros. Wii U

Just like Super Smash Bros. 3DS, the unlock conditions are fairly relaxed in the Wii U version. Of course there is at least one stage that's hidden behind a specific unlock condition, and most of the stage unlocks aren't apparent at first. Although this doesn't spoil any stage specifically, I'd refrain from reading the comments if you want to be surprised.more

Review: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS was everything I hoped it would be. It rekindled my love for the franchise after my group of friends and I lost interest due to Brawl, and I'm playing online more often than I would with most fig...more

Stealth is a tricky game mechanic to pull off well. If it is too slow it can be dull, but if it is too fast it is more action than stealth. If it is too predictable it becomes mundane, but if it is too random it requires more...more
