Nintendo reveals new 'Classic Controller PRO' for Wii photo

Not happy with your Classic Controller for the Wii? Too classic, maybe?

Here's a solution: the Classic Controller PRO. Revealed on Nintendo's Japanese Wii accessory Web site, the controller looks like a bulkier, fancier version of the standard Classic Controller. The controller also adds a second row of shoulder buttons, similar to the now-familiar DualShock set-up.

No details on pricing or release for North America, but it should ship to Japanese stores this Summer. Also unknown is why Nintendo feels the need to release an upgraded classic controller when current Virtual Console and WiiWare games don't particularly call for it. What does Nintendo have up its sleeve?

Too many accessories for the Wii. What it needs are more games.

It's so classic that it was adopted for the design of one of the current-gen consoles contollers? Rather than the CCPRO.. shouldn't that just be 'What people have used to play their playstations for the last three generations'?

Not quite as snappy a name I suppose.

Dude, if you look at both the old and new designs all they did was move the tiny buttons nobody uses to the shoulders :/

Technofile, Well GC controller doesn't have two shoulder buttons on each side. But it looks like it will get rid of the ZL and ZR buttons. Those were kind of bullshit.

At last, a respectable controller for the Gamecube that does away with that stupidly small D-pad and the WIMPY WIMPY WIMPY C-stick!

...What do you mean, "this isn't for the Gamecube?"

I liked the current classic controller feel, other than those bastard ZL/ZRs. I'm not sure if a thicker controller will feel better, but if those buttons are now resting on the sides with the L/Rs, it's gotta be some kind of improvement.

Jeez, that is one THICK-ASS controller...I could probably swing it around like a mace and strike a man dead with it O_O

Aaarrgh! Why don't they just put the Wavebird back into production? It's still the best Virtual console controller available, but mine is getting kinda old now, and they people are asking for stupid money for them on eBay because they know that they are vastly preferable to the Classic....

HA HA HA! Now Nindento copies Sony's controller layout. They made a good choice because I love the duelshock. That controller without the wings is very uncomfortable, hopefully that attachment will make it less awkward.

Oh man I forgot about those. Now I can play 1080 again, before the Z buttons were a huge hassle.

Maybe you can use it on Gamecube games?

@ thouch: Really? I like it but the plain old Wii controller on it's side is my favorite.

=/ I wish they'd do one which didn't need attaching to the bloody wii remote..

@Drack48: That's fine for the old NES games, but you can't use that for any of the other VC stuff

@Artimecion: You mean like a Wavebird? Yeah, I feel the same way.....

Should have had the shape and face buttons of the jap saturn controller. Second row of shoulder buttons are good though, could do without the wings and I agree with Artimecion, connected to the remote it feels as if it might as well be a wired controller.

yeah, like the wavebird. Whats the point of a 'wireless' control system if you have to have an extra lump on a wire sat in your lap, getting in the way? It's fair enough with the nunchuck as you still need the wiimote but the classic controller bugs me so much!

For all of you saying they copied the PS1 / PS2 controller, take a look at the button layout SNES controller and then pull your foot out of your mouth.

I'll be interested when you dont need to plug your controller into the waggle-stick in order to use it.

Also, why is this thing so thick looking? It looks like the albino cousin of the Duke Xbox Controller.

*Sigh* And for all the people saying they just copied the Playstation layout... didnt Playstation pretty much copy/paste the original SNES layout with the original PSX controllers?

Maybe now that they are done being so spiffy and different they will start making better games that don't require hopping around like a spaz to play.

is this a standalone product or does it just snap onto the accessory slot on the back of the classic?

@ShamblingCat: It looks new and not a snap-on. Note the lack of the small Zl and Zr near the cord on the controller.

Until I saw the second row of shoulders, I was going to muse that Nintendo stole the wing idea from...whoever it was that made the snap-on that had the wings and you could wrap the cord around part of it...yeah.

How 'bout a classic controller pro for 360. One that just happens to have 6 front buttons and is durable.

Yes, Sony pretty much did copy the snes controller, and that's what I find funny. In a kind of ironic sort of way.

They need to start making standalone wireless controllers for the Wii like this one so I'm not plugging it into my Wiimote all the time to play VC games.

"Put wings on an ordinary pad..." and it will fly away.

Seriously though, what is the point? It's a Playstation 2 controller now.
