While the words "It was a bigger iPod Touch" rang throughout the Internet upon the reveal of Apple's iPad, the source of this particular quote is a bit more interesting -- Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata.
Iwata felt the reveal and hardware was unsurprising, while denying rumors that the next iteration of the Nintendo DS would support motion controls.
The president is also unsure of the "big winner" at this year's CES, 3D gaming.
''I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?'' he said, obviously unaware of how ridiculous people look like playing some current Wii titles. Iwata also brings up an interesting point regarding long term health effects 3D gaming sessions, which theoretically would last longer than your typical 2 hour movie, might have on players.

iPad had a chance to get a stronger place in the gaming market, but it still all touch, so that's not going to work for most people. That only works with various games here and there. Otherwise it just seems like a larger, more expensive iTouch, which is what I'd rather have.
My DS and PSP serve my movie and music needs adequately, but I wouldn't mind having the iTouch since it would do both really well and be a better mobile (but still limited) browser.
3D is just a big gag. Motion control has applications, but 3D doen't add anything to how we'll be playing games. Plus people are just now starting to upgrade to HDTV - have fun trying to get us to upgrade to this.
Wrong! It adds headaches!
@bloodylop - Yeah, Virtual Boy. I remember borrowing this one as a kid. It was the first thing by Nintendo I think I ever truly hated.
like the wii is...he has some balls to say that when his system is still on last gen hardware. Regardless of how well it sells.
THIS.
And
Nintendo>Apple
That stuff might not even be what Iwate was talking about, though, I could see how it might have some psychological consequence in the long-term.
My problem with the tech really boils down to the fact they haven't done enough market testing and research with people to consider every angle. You can't just assume we all have 20/20 vision and its going to work well for everyone. And even if it did, what design choices might be a consequence of that? Would we drop subtitling because people don't like words leaping out of the screen? And would that cut out the deaf?
Stuff like that is what needs to be thought about. But now, mindless march toward technological advancement is mindless as usual.
Honestly? This is just typical arrogant Nintendo bullsh*t that they spew every time another company comes along with some sort of mobile gaming platform. But not to single Nintendo out, Apple, Microsoft and Sony are just as guilty of doing the same thing. Aaron Greenburg statements come to mind.
I just think that Iwata is giving iPad any credit. While it may not be as groundbreaking as people were hoping, keep in mind how horrendous iPhone 2G was when it was released without MMS, 3rd party apps, video recording, and confined to the EDGE network. Apple has a reputation for breaking new ground and I think Iwata is foolishly brushing that off here.
Except nobody said the DS Lite, i or LL were innovative works of magical genius, just hardware revisions.
@Rekkie
So Apple can release mediocre hardware because they're planning on charging you again for what the iPad was should've been in the first place?
It's too bad you can't find a game that appeals to you on the DS, but that's just an opinion (and a minority one) that should have no bearing on this comment. Apple could really use some criticism and consumer apathy to get them to start releasing new products with substance to match the style and hype. Too many flashes in the pan for the first year of the product's lifespan.
So, in summation, Iwata is not allowed to say anything bad about the iPad because the DSi does not appeal to you.
And you're calling Iwata arrogant?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
If you want a gaming PC, tablets aren't the answer. Especially the Mac tablet.
And if it didn't say in Apple's press release that the iPad is meant to be designed for playing games, I'd agree with you.
As far as 3D gaming goes, I get annoyed having to watch Avatar or some other crazy 3D movie wearing glasses. Not only does it pinch the side of my head, but the cost of the tickets sky-rocket. Who's to say games don't work the same way. If they add in costs to create a 3D game, will it make the prices go even higher? I did like Johnny Chung Lee's heading track demo he made for the Wii. I thought that was pretty cool, although it requires moving yourself opposed to sitting still, so even then, I don't know how well that would work either.
a little off topic here, but have you not noticed nvidia's 3D Vision? since (most) games are already rendered in 3D, all that has to be done to make them viewable in 3D is to render the game at two different angles, one for the left eye and one for the right. the fact that many of us are already playing regular games in 3D pretty much proves that the cost of games will not increase because of it.
the reason for the added cost is just for the equipment used to view stuff in 3D, like 3D projectors, LCDs and glasses etc, but for the home user it's a one off.
Also, the future of 3D gaming already happened a couple years ago when Metal Gear Acid 2 came out. This bad boy can give you a headache in 2 minutes flat:
It's either a less-portable iPod/iPhone or a less-functional MacBook--take your pick.
And I've yet to see anything to convince me 3D TV tech is anything more than a scam to sell televisions to people that just bought HDTVs. Electronics manufacturers are simply hurting for cash and rushing the tech to the market long before it's ready for general consumption.
And now for hypocrisy.
Can you imagine standing on a board and flapping your arms like a giant bird -- with glasses on? Humiliating.
But that ain't got nothing to do with wearing glasses, lots of people have to wear glasses white gaming, why is wearing 3D glasses even worse? Flapping your arms like a giant bird is what is humiliating.
The price is right though I think. I expected it to be a lot more, but it seems it's competing directly w kindle and netbooks (although as a netbook it seems to fall short imo).
From the Apple press release:
"'iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,' said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. 'iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.'"
Sounds like Apple thinks its more than an ereader, eh? I would hope so, as the cheapest model is twice as expensive as Kindle and similar devices. So if it is an ereader, its a ludicrously expensive one with lots of useless features. Good hustle though, dipshit.
I will say, however that a tablet with no physical keyboard has little appeal to me, even in the educational environment where I use my current tablet.
it's twice the price NOW.
The iPad will be marketed directly at those who would be interested in buying a Kindle.
The iPad will be to ebook readers what the iPod touch is to mp3 players. If you have no interest in ebooks, you probably won't have much interest in the iPad.
Now I have the same level of hatred, but in a much larger device.
All hail Apple, greatest creators of our time.
I foresee a new flame war between Apple fans and Nintendo. I never saw it coming, but come to think of it, I look forward to seeing where this will take the fan communities of both companies.
If it doesn't have e ink, then it isn't an ereader worth buying.
