Nintendo predicts 4 million 3DS sales in one month photo

There is no question that the 3DS will be big, but just how massive does Nintendo expect it to be? F*cking -- that is how massive! In fact, the peripheral maker believes that the 3D handheld will net four million sales in a mere month.

In addition, Nintendo also believes that 15 million 3DS games will be sold during the same time period. These confident boasts come courtesy of Nintendo's sales forecasts, where the general message seems to be, "We will make a lot of money and then wipe our arses with swan's neck like proper posh people."

Considering the huge wealth of games coming, the potential awesomeness of the 3DS, and Nintendo's own marketing power, I don't think four million is too wild a guess. What do you reckon?

Lobster boob, I can dig it.

I don't know about their forecasting on sales as after finding out about the price how many parents will actually be droping $300+ on a handheld for their snotty 10 year old kid to take to school?

Nintendo can do it. We just need an updated "IT PRINTS MONEY" image.

Four games per 3DS sold? That sounds pretty ridiculous to me. If it's as expensive as it sounds, I know I will be buying one game at a time. SSFIV and Zelda, if they're both available at launch, maybe.

Not at 300 dollars it won't. Okay, so maybe it will (I don't know how much it will cost, and I can't really comprehend 4 million anything). But the 3ds kind of goes against Nintendo's portable strategy of not using cutting edge technology to keep batter life up and price down. Battery life isn't that big of a deal anymore with rechargeable batteries, but will consumers pay 250 or more for a portable on a wide scale? (probably not)

Those numbers do sound pretty high. Although if it reaches even half of them then that's still a resounding success.

I'm hoping I can afford to help them reach that goal.

Nintendo is the apple of videogames now.
The 3DS is gonna come out and sell a ton like the ds and wii before.

Me however I'll wait for the inevitable redesign in a year or so after release

Damn! 4 million?! Part of me reads that number and thinks Nintendo executives are getting ahead of themselves, just like another company's executive *cough* *Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg* *cough* but considering how successful the DS is, as well as the hype behind the new 3DS games *drool*, the incredible features (not a fan of 3D but if it doesn't require glasses then I'll try it out), the graphics, and everything, I think the 3DS just might sell 4 million... maybe even more.

If Nintendo is smart then they should release the 3DS for $250 in North America (same equivalent for Europe, and other regions). They shouldn't charge anymore for it than that. $300 in my opinion would probably turn casual gamers away due to the cost.

That seems a bit unreasonably high expectations. I expect it to sell well but 4 million in a month is a bit of high expectations for any hardware especially if it ends up costing more than $200. I personally still have yet to see any games interesting enough to make me buy it.

It will be interesting to see. More than any other gaming-hardware manufacturer, Nintendo has a large number of fans who will blindly buy any new product they release. They're a lot like Apple in that regard. Say 'Pokemon' or 'Mario' to these people, and they'll go without food to get their hands on it. It's the regular people they have to convince that it's worth the price at launch, rather than waiting on the inevitable price drop and remodeling.

Not that I'm getting it.

If Pokémon can still sell 2.5 million copies in a week (I think it was) in Japan alone then there's not even a shadow of a doubt that the 3DS can.

Also, dat header.

I'm not sure about the sales numbers on the units themselves (4 million in a month is stretching it, even if they release the system worldwide on the same day), but if they manage that I can see them selling 3-4 units through to gamers per unit.

Personally speaking, I'll be picking up Megaman Legends 3 and Dead or Alive: Dimensions, guaranteed, and I can't tell myself the Ocarina of Time updated port, Paper Mario, or Kid Icarus don't look interesting enough to maybe pick up one or two.

It'll come down to the price as far as immediate sell-through goes. I've budgeted $400-$450 and depending on the price, I'll pick up 1 to 3 or 4 games on top of the initial purchase of the 3DS.

Well considering that last December they sold almost 4 million Wii's in America alone, then I think its totally doable for them to sell 4 million 3DS's at launch worldwide. I think they will sell whatever they put out, no matter what the price of it is. It will probably be $250 in North America, which I would be totally fine with. People always say Nintendo stop being so cheap and put out a better, more powerful systems. Well they have now, so deal with it being more expensive, because this is what we have all wanted all along now!

They will probably sell as many units as they can produce. Hopefully they will have 4 million from a cold start...

However, I think their predictions for the attach rate are ludicrous.

It won't be more than $250 stop looking at the Yen to USD conversion.

The price will be $225 to $250 which is completely reasonable and within the usual Nintendo pricing scheme for the region.

jim, i love you. you're one of the reasons why i haven't completely given up on the internet. also, i'm not looking forward to the day i'm going to waste sitting in line for this damn thing. the demand for 3ds is going to be even higher than the wii was.

big n's prediction of 3 to 4 games per system sounds about right to me, i'm wondering how i'm going to afford 3ds, star fox, zelda, ssf4, mgs, and one of the re titles.

4 million 3DS sales in the first month?

Silly Nintendo. Looking at the launch of the DS and Wii, they won't even produce 4 million units in the first YEAR.

I don't even mind they're being a bit arrogant. The 3DS is do want material, regardless of price.

It could be said Nintendo have earned it, going from the industry laughing stock ("Wii?! LOL") to printing money.

Also, price. I think a good chunk of 3DS's sells are going to rely on letting people demo the darn thing somehow.

At $200, maybe. But they won't sell that many if it launches as $300.

At the very least, they won't get MY money until it hits around $200 at the earliest.

ONLY four million? The 3DS will be the hot thing for the gamers and non-gamers alike. I think that the only thing to stop them from selling more than that would be if they aren't be able to make enough.
LokiTerjesen's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/29/2010 15:16

I'm pretty sure that most people that think the price wouldn't be worth it or that those sales numbers are unattainable have not had their hands on the 3DS yet. Because anyone I've seen that has been lucky enough to get some time with one, assures me that they'd hand over their first born for the system. It's that amazing, apparently.

Also, with the amount of great titles that have been announced I don't think its out of the question for people to grab 4-5 games per handheld.
