Nintendo Power publisher could close magazines photo

Future, the big ol' publisher behind a bunch of great magazines and websites, is looking at shifting operations as broke-ass Americans aren't buying enough magazines. Or something like that. A note to investors makes it sound like they'll shift to digital-only publishing in the US, which could mean the closure of some of their magazines.

In our country, Future publishes all the official magazines: PlayStation: The Official Magazine, Official Xbox Magazine and Nintendo Power. They're also responsible for Best Buy's @Gamer and PC Gamer. My favorite is one they don't publish here: Edge. Fantastic read, that.

Here's a bit from the note:

"With trading conditions in the U.S. reflecting ongoing weakness and decreasing visibility at newsstand, and an acceleration in the year-on-year growth rate in digital revenues, the Board is now considering a wider range of strategic options in respect of its U.S. operations."

The company stated this summer that they were already pushing toward a digital-only future, but now they say it has become even more difficult to survive in the rapidly declining print market, let alone the pockets-inside-out world that we're living in now.

Gamasutra says that Future is expected to update plans for their US division for 2012 and beyond on November 24.

Nintendo Power still exists? Huh.

Just for laughs, try to imagine the reverse of this happening. "Today, Destructoid announced their new print magazine..."

The NP Future owns really has nothing to do with the one you remember as a kid. NP used to be run out straight out of Nintendo HQ until a few years ago when they sold it off =<.

I called this once Nintendo of America gave up publishing rights of NP to Future. I figured that that's just the beginning of the end for it.

And you know what? It's fine. NP had a great run. Print is on its way out (says the guy who works in inkjet printing, eep), and we're only fighting it for nostalgia sake.

I renewed my subscription this week for NP. Its the only place for good Nintendo coverage. Was suprised when I saw this months lameinformer cover tho. With all bashing they do, was suprised to see zelda on the cover with a 25th anniversary special inside

Yeah, I'm not reading magazines any more. This is a shame, but I won't be affected by this loss.

I still love to read magazines. Great for the toilet. I am also a dinasaur who buys the paper every morning so I am in the minority.

I pretty much only read Game Informer anymore, and that's because I get it with my PowerUp card. NP has gone waaaaaay downhill, so I am further unaffected by this. Indeed.

Truefax: I have been a nintendo power subscriber since I was 6 years old.

I am currently 27.

Seeing this kinda breaks my heart, just a bit. But if it means I'll have to buy an e-reader so I can read my monthly NP, SO BE IT. I'll miss getting my magazine every month, though.

Why buy a magazine when you can find out all the info in it online weeks and sometimes months before?

I didn't renew my subscription for Nintendo Power once Future took over. The reason was simple: they stopped including three-page fold-out posters. Those posters were really the only strong reason I had for keeping a subscription to a Nintendo-sanctioned magazine once I grew up and also realized I could get more objective coverage online. Still, I have fond memories of reading the magazine as a kid, especially back when it was more strategy and guide oriented. And Nintendo Power always made the best player's guides, hands-down.

I hope everything goes well! :( Lizzie works for Gamer, right? Blargh ... Maybe they'll just go fully digital? Like an iPad app or something? :/ Who knows.

Getting magazines in the mail is an enjoyable experience. It would suck to have less options. NINTENDO Power is fun to read.

I don't know why they didn't do this in the first place.
I thought years ago that they should've shifted to digital and put their magazines on their respective consoles/handhelds and sell them for 2-4 bucks an issue.

Imagine digital issues of Nintendo Power on the Wii and 3DS. Heck they could be more interactive magazines too, kind of like Gamerzines enhanced PDF magazines.

I'm in the same boat as M47R1X. All I read is GI (used to rock GamePro until they went downhill) due to GameStop's card. The officials are kind if crappy (to me, even OXM's demo disc always seems outdated), but I hope no one loses their jobs over this. Maybe go digital? Save some trees?

Anyone else remember when you bought the NES you could either have a Mario sticker, or you could attach that sticker to a card and get a year free of Nintendo Power? All the kids in my neighborhood had the damn sticker on their NES's but my father sent it in. Was a good little magazine!

I just got my New Nintendo Power today.

I personally really like it, and REALLY don't want it to go out of buisness...

Besides, I really don't like Game Informer that much.

This is sad. I've been subscribing and receiving Nintendo Power (including back when it was the Nintendo Fun Club) since 1987. Granted it hasn't quite been the same since around the end of the N64 era it's still an enjoyable read.

Ever since NP stopped including kickass posters on a regular basis I knew they were going to lose more customers, I too don't know why I bothered to subscribe for the past 2 years. My subscription ends either this month or the next I believe, I won't be resubscribing when I don't get anything out of it.

I still subscribe to magazines, sometimes they get stories before any website does, though it's not impossible imagining that in the future (No pun intended) websites will be at the forefront of this. I'm just sad that so many hardworking people will lose their jobs. I guess it's just that magazines were such a huge part of my life growing up that it's very sad to see them go.

R.I.P., print media. You will be sorely missed, despite how much more convenient the internet is.

The guys at Future are behind some of the best writing in the industry. Whilst Nintendo Power probably isn't the best example of this, Edge, PC Gamer UK and Ngamer UK probably are. The decline in the popularity of magazines is nothing but bad for the gaming industry given the quality of writers the profession employs.
