Nintendo plans to profit from the 3DS on day one photo

Selling hardware at a loss and expecting software sales to make up the difference is a common business model for console manufacturers. Unless, of course, you are Nintendo. Their devices have almost invariably been able to turn a profit from the moment they hit store shelves. And the 3DS which has been making waves all over the industry looks to be no different.

According to an interview with VentureBeat, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata believes that their upcoming 3D handheld has, "value worthy of the production cost," and believes that the device can sell without losing money on every sale.

I was already curious as to how much the 3DS is going to retail for when it releases, but this kicks that interest up a notch. It's a startling new technology, one which actually seems to work, and that's almost never cheap. Which begs the question, is this new 3D technology less expensive than it seems to be or are we going to get some serious sticker shock when Nintendo announces the price?

I totally missed it linuxguy. Thanks for spelling it out for me. :)
The only way I would have caught on is if they'd put cyan and red on the same machine.

"startling new technology"

Dude, it's a parralax screen, it has been around for a couple of years. You put a filter on top of a screen so that light emits in two directions at your eyes. You make it sound like they invented the Holodeck.

I'm not as entranced by the 3D gimmick yet. And while e3 did convince me to get one, it'll be awhile. Definitely not a day 1 purchase for me.

I'm buying a 3DS on day one because of the software. The tech specs only interest me if they push developers to make some high quality games.

well seems to me that is the only decent business-model....

though I appreciate Sony and MS not charging the full amount of their consoles to us too :-)

the 3DS will prolly be a day-one-purchase for me as well :-)

I won't be parting with my cash day one. History has taught me there'll be a shiny upgrade six months later.

249.99. I will be interested to see this when it comes out. I probably will not be buying one but I would like to see if my idea on how this is working is correct.

I really hate when companies try to justify high prices on their own products by saying "it has value" "we feel that the price is competetive" "three new map packs are totally worth 15 dollars because they'll last forever!"

nintendo is so freaking rich right now it could stand to lose a little money off the top, which would help them in the long run, by allowing a larger instal base to buy more software.

I'm betting $199.99 USD. We already know the GPU is from 2006. The top screen is probably the most expensive piece of hardware in the system, but I'd guess they've probably been able to negotiate a pretty nice price based on expected orders/sales volumes in the tens of millions.

No, it doesn't 'beg the question.'

From wikipedia:
"Begging the question (or petitio principii, "assuming the initial point") is a logical fallacy in which the proposition to be proved is assumed implicitly or explicitly in the premise. The word beg, when used in this phrase, does not mean "asking for something", instead it means to dodge or avoid.[1] Begging the question is related to circular argument, circulus in probando (Latin for "circle in proving") or circular reasoning but they are considered absolutely different by Aristotle.[2] The first known definition in the West is by the Greek philosopher Aristotle around 350 BCE, in his book Prior Analytics, where he classified it as a material fallacy."

TL;DR? Stop using that phrase; you don't know what it means.

The top screen is not much more expensive than the bottom one. Parallax screens have not been released publicly, because of the fact that the view angle isn't that good. But in a handheld, the viewing angle doesn't have to be that good, as only one person is viewing it.

I still say $150. No Nintendo handheld has been that expensive. Anyone that is thinking it's going to cost more than the Wii or the DSXL is a nitwit. And yes, I used the word "nitwit"

Nintendo is begging the question. They have stated that it is coming out before March 2011 and they are going to make a profit off of each one sold. Whenever someone asks them the price, they quickly say that it will be announced soon. The way I see it, they are waiting for TGS. My guess is November like the original DS.

Mid-November for $150 is where my bet is.

I'll wait. I know it sounds crass and all but I just want to know what else they're gonna end up doing. What changes they'll make with future iterations and such. It may be nothing or it may be radical. Better safe than sorry.

I'm gonna laugh if it costs as much as the PSP did when it came out, since everyone bitched and whined that that was too expensive.

I've been hearing $200-300 everywhere I go. Regardless, I'll be waiting, because we all know a revision will be on its way. And the software won't really be there in top form right out of the gate anyway.

200$ most likely, any higher and they might pull a Sony, never underestimate the power of an accessible price point, if anything the X360 has proven that over and over, despite all it's hardware problems.

I don't think the way the term was used in the article is the same as what you're referring to. I'm not an expert, so I could be wrong.

After seeing some of the demo vids of the 3DS in action, I have to say that my prior skepticism is slowly eroding.

Where are all the people that say---"Nintendo, you f'n greedy some bitches!" Oh, wait.. It is Nintendo, not Microsoft nor Sony, and not the Xbox 360. So they can charge whatever they want and people will still buy, and no bashing. Ill be the first to post, I won't drop more than 200 bucks, bloody period. And, it is sorta irritating to think Sony and MS both took losses on their consoles to get a larger install base and to get it to the consumer. :)

What I'm guessing is that the 3DS will cost $200 to make and Nintendo will sell it for $210-250.

Count my money in. Day one purchase for sure I'm not very worried about any future revisions, as the only DS upgrade I made was from the original to the Lite. The Lite was so much more comfortable to hold than the first iteration, and I don't see the design being a similar issue with the 3DS.

Well, if it's not over $250, I'll get it.

If they come out with a better and cheaper one a year later, I'm going to say "Fuck it," and probably stop buying from Nintendo, since that means they've virtually become Apple when it comes to handhelds.
