Nintendo patents a new Wii controller photo

This new Wii controller patent was filed on June 26th. This was uncovered by the good people at Spong, who were actually looking for more details on the rumored Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller. Hey Sony, do you want to make another controller as well? Oh wait, you already have a motion-sensing one.

Hell, if you stand back and squint your eyes a bit, this new Nintendo controller could be an Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller. Well, except for the Gamecube-looking controls. And what's that thing in the middle? I tried reading the patent text. You try:

An X button 46 and a Y button are further arranged in line on the upper surface of the housing. An imaging information arithmetic unit is provided at a front end of the housing in a longitudinal direction in such a manner that an imaging device thereof is exposed from a front-end surface.

What do you make of that? I still don't know what the hell I'm looking at!

Check out the patent text for some interesting reading. There's also a mention of a gun-style controller within the text.

What do you make of this? Do you think it's something that will just sit in a file forever? Or will Nintendo actually do something with this?

The whole is for the WiiMote obviously but a second screen for maps and stuff would be great. I'll keep dreaming

@mistic: Exactly what I was thinking!

We all know Nintendo is looking to expand the memory capacity of the Wii. This makes perfect sense.

Haha.

I'm on the fence about this. It doesn't look as ergonomic as the GCN controller, though it looks like they've made the D-Pad bigger which is always good. Wireless +rumble would also be a good replacement for my wavebird. Sounds okay, just nothing really new. Need more confirmation before I can really make a call on it.

I was wondering why they didn't go this route with the classic controller in the first place. Why ditch the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii-mote for a standard analogue/face button controller when you can have both?

Looks like they needed a standard controller so that they arent forced to make every single game into a waggle fest.

I'll vote Wii redesign that doesn't feature the gamecube controller ports, but still keeps the backward compatibility. YOU SAW HERE FIRST

Yet more fodder for the "LOL TEH WII IZ JUS 2 GAY-CYUBEZ DUCTAPED 2GETHR HURHURHUR" crowd. >.>

As for me, the GCN is probably the console I've sunk the most time into (you thank SSBM for that), and I still feel the most comfortable with my Wavebird. So I would actually prefer using a peripheral like this instead of the Classic Controller.

What's the point? I can plug in my Wavebird and use that, no?

CBunn: Sounds about right. Something like this should have been released instead of the classic controller from the start.

They should have omitted the controller ports to begin with and just integrated Wavebird receivers. I can't believe they put in the ports and passed up the opportunity to do the ultimate Nintendo move: sell GameCube controller port USB dongles for $20 a pop!

Maybe the next update will alow the GC Games to run in Wii mode to I don't need to get off my ass to go from playing TOS to Sonic 3.

Not that I'm lazy but it's a pest if your playing from your bed or some such.

My first thought was some kind of VMU-type thing as well. Maybe even with downloadable minigames or something. Which would be completely unnecessary.

Also, Kotaku says that the patent is from 2005 or something.

Someone should really look into that.
