Imagine a DS-like cartridge that sticks out the back and has a larger top. It's not that hard for anyone that makes or reviews games to imagine, as that's pretty close to the ROMs that games devs use.
The thing is that the patent never comes out and says that this is a DS compliant cartridge. It could be for for a totally new system. DS2 anyone?
The application says that “the broken lines showing of an electronic game machine is for illustrative purposes only.” As you can see in the image in the gallery below, those broken lines look exactly like a Nintendo DS. Source Siliconera points out that the cart has the same number of pins as the old DS ones do.
Maybe it's some kind of new add-on for current DS/DSi.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Of course it could also be another DS Rumble Pak.
Or maybe its a scope or laser sight for augmented reality games, even better!
Or maybe its a cart with a new chip in it like the old Virtua Racer on the genesis.
Or maybe it's a card reader of some sort.
Or maybe it's just a cart with a bigger logo that sticks out :P
What?!
Stuff like flash memory cards are getting more and more effective, look at MicroSD cards... Now you can get like 32gb or something in that tiny thing?
If anything Nintendo was smart to stick with cartridges for handhelds.
Why would Nintendo EVER need to goto disk based now days? Technology is of such that cartridges would be WAY more effective for both speed, usablity, memory, etc.
The only disadvantages discs have is that they can be noisy when the disc is spinning, and they also use more power than a solid state device. Since both of these problems are solved by pre-loading the disc on the solid state drive (while accessing the presence of the disc for DRM reasons), I really don't see why you would object. Personally, I think small cartridges are a giant pain in the ass, and switching to discs/pre-loading would make DS2 an instant buy for me.
wait... does that mean that... :O there IS a possibility for a Drill Dozer sequel?!
@Monodi
I'd be on board for a Drill Dozer sequel on the DS.
Nintendo know that if they make the media, they can gain more money by maintaining their awfully expensive licensing of them. Instead of sensibly going down a iPhone route, that would also open up the system and just give DS2 some a flash hard drive or something, they'll do the opposite.
I hope that I'm wrong, as using Micro SD would be way cool for DS2. My hopes have been stomped into the mud by them too many times. Either way, I'll still by a DS2.
I'd suspect it's probably to allow the DS to have bigger games on it (maybe better graphics too?), unless... Oh, could that be a reset button thing on the side?
Logic FTW.
Pokemon Pinball 2 confirmed? lol
