Nintendo owns European sales charts photo

The last time we talked Spain and Germany sales charts, we found that Super Smash Brothers Brawl had toppled Metal Gear Solid 4 for the top spot. The week ending on July 13 shows Nintendo’s conquering of Europe has reached a nearly impossible level. The charts, according to gamesindustry.biz, reveal that not only has Snake disappeared from the German list, but so has every other game that doesn’t run on a Wii or Nintendo DS. The Spanish are trying to diversify their portfolio still, but we’re witnessing a shift down from the only two titles on their top ten that isn’t a Nintendo software.

Spain

  1. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
  2. Wii Play (Wii)
  3. Wii Fit (Wii)
  4. Cooking guide: Can't Decide What to Eat? (DS)
  5. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Darkness (DS)
  6. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time (DS)
  7. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)
  8. My Life Coach (DS)
  9. My Baby Girl (DS)
  10. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
German
  1. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
  2. Wii Fit (Wii)
  3. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time (DS)
  4. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Darkness (DS)
  5. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  6. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (DS)
  7. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS)
  8. More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima (DS)
  9. Mario Kart DS (DS)
  10. Mario Party 8 (Wii)
Man, that is a lot of Nintendo. I guess Europeans really love waggles and styluses. What do you guys think about this?

The general public has no taste. Why the fuck would the Spaniards and Germans need WiiFit, My Baby Girl and My Life Coach? They walk everywhere and have some of the best schools in the world!!!

In my eyes, both Sony and Nintendo are tied in Europe. Nintendo has Mario Kart DS and Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Sony has Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. All that other Nintendo ftuff is non-consequential.

At least, for Sony's sake, those are PS3 games and not PS2 games, that would hurt for them.

I'm sure Nintendo is selling well, but two countries does not a legitimate argument make.

@lubczyk -- how is it non-consequential if it's selling well? Those non-consequential games are changing the market and the industry right under our noses.

There clambering for wii games because they're all fucking amazed new wii games are finally out in europe. theres german and spanish nintendo fanboys that give the most devout american nintendo fanboy a run for thier money.

Also I don't think xbox 360 has released a decent title over here in europe since the 7 month delayed rock band & ninja gaiden 2. And ps3 isnt really offering up much either since mgs4.

I think its a case of all the 360 fans are too busy on cod4, and halo 3 and ps3 fans on cod4 also and metal gear online.

Personally I'm amazed germany has 360s and ps3's on sale with how strict they are on some games i still remember how they were single handedly responsible for the original ninja giaden from having decapitations removed from the PAL coding. I think they just boycotted the sequel.

And we wondered why Nintendo's E3 presentation turned into a casual borefest. They don't care about the industry, just global-domination!!

@Joseph -Orcist- Leray

I'm just pointing out my frustration that Nintendo fanboys consider the ridiculous sales of games like Brain Training and Wii Fit a sign of Nintendo winning the console war and shaping the industry.

If being #1 and shaping the industry means games like Wii Fit and Cooking Guide then I am glad to own the last place niche console, the PS3.

I've owned a Wii since launch and a PS3 since 3 months ago and I couldn't be more dissatisfied with the Wii and more satisfied with the PS3. That's how bad it is!!!

I think there's something wrong when the product in last place (My PS3) is giving you more enjoyment than the one in first (My Wii).

Games like Wii Fit and Brain Training are the gaming industry's equivalent of the music industry's Pop stars like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. Sure, they may be more popular than Classical performances, but it doesn't make them any more tasteless. Like the music industry, the Wii is selling on image alone. Mario and Sonic and Wii Fit are proof of that.

People are surprised that these types of 'games' have long tails compared to the traditionally front-loaded 'blockbusters'?

The amount of shit on that list is mindblowing.

But Nintendo is a master of its craft, no matter how many games they don't give the european market, no matter how many games the UK gets a months after its out in the states, the UK market is all to happy to spread those cheeks a little wider, lube up a bit and demand that Nintendo pushes it in a little deeper.

I don't mind, the top 360 games are selling just as well as they ever had, same with the PS3 games. It just so happens that Wii and DS sell more than any of the previous console generations have ever managed.

Here is the argument:
For hundreds of years there was nothign but banana's to eat if you wanted fruit. There werte those who liked bananas and those who didn't. Those who didn't, kind of didn't get this whole "fruit" thing. Suddenly, somebody started selling apples, and everybody started buying them: even the guys who didn't like fruit before. That's because apples were so easy to just pick up and eat. You didn't need to peel them, you just ate them. Some banana lovers like the apples too, but some banana lover hated them. Either way, people who like bananas still buy bananas.

Europeans are stupid... hey wait a second...

Seriously though, since when is Europe only two countries? Germany tried that but it didn't work out because of you Yanks.

Sometimes I wonder whether Nintendo would be in the position it is today if it didn't have the Pokemon franchise to milk and carry it through the era of the N64 and the GameCube, which really sucked for the former market leader.

I bought three games today: Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Okami and Mario & Luigi Partners in Time. You had no idea of how much crap I had to search through on the shelves in order to find those games! There was, Hannah Montana, High School Musical and Imagine Petz series. I swear, the gaming industry is on the brink of turning completely into Hollywood.

The gaming industry turning into hollywood is probably a good thing. At least more money will be going into development. Also,

@lubczyk,
your analogy is pretty much dead on, about these new games being pop music equivalent, but there might be more to it. Rarely in the music industry does a genre go away. Once they get a sample of something new or different, someone's gonna like it and make more of it. So we end up with more pop bands and more weird games, but the other stuff is still around so really there's no loss to the rest of us. Maybe we just have to sift through more shit on the shelves, but our games are still there.

@donkeykong

The problem is that 3rd parties are exploiting new gamers who don't know any better.

NCAA 09 All-Play on the Wii has less features, more bugs and no online play unlike NCAA 06 on the PS2? Why? Because the developers and suits at EA know that new gamers don't know nay better.

It'd be like Wal-Mart selling old tube Black and White TVs at exuberant prices to people who have never seen a TV before. It's outright exploitation.
