Nintendo: only 'geeks and otaku' want additional wii storage photo

Check the storage space on your Wii. It's not looking so hot now, right? With only 512mb of on-board storage, all of our Virtual Console downloads are feeling squished under the weight of these new WiiWare titles, and Nintendo still has yet to offer a new storage solution.

This is something some of us have been complaining about from day one, and I'm sure Nintendo knows how we feel by now. Nintendo of Europe doesn't seem to think much of our cries, though. According to their Laurent Fischer, NoE's marketing director, the only gamers that want this additional storage are "geeks and otaku." This quote comes from WiiWare launch coverage in Edge magazine.

Sure, right now it might only be "geeks and otaku" that worry about the limited storage space of the Wii. Give it time. Soon it will be the millions soccer moms and dads that can't figure out why their latest download won't fit on their console. And then the kids will bitch. And then the calls to Nintendo will start. And then we might get our increased storage. Maybe.

Are you one of the "geeks and otaku" that need this storage? Do you think Nintendo is overlooking a potentially serious problem?

Buy an SD card ? It is so cheap for a 2 Gig SD now you can just back up your Virtual Console games and WiiWare titles.

Why the fuck couldn't they figure out a way to make this happen yet? Damn you nintendo, with your pseudo-inovative technology and your sleek marketing!.. Alright, it's a pretty good system, but the simple addition of a hard drive would make it even better... Especially when we can't play the fucking games from the SD card itself!! At this point it's not anti-piracy, it's sheer paranoia!! Oh well, let's hope all this sillyness ends soon.

Sure, you can back them up, but the problem is you can't access those games directly from the SD card. You have to transfer them back to the system memory, which is quite a bit more of a hassle than it has to be. There are also restrictions on what kind of data you can transer to SD cards (doesn't seem to like me backing up save game, for instance) which makes buying one seem more pointless.

On the other hand, the 360 has much more storage space with a hard drive attached, and the games you have access to on Live is determined by your account information, not your game console itself. This is important, because if your Wii dies on you, then you'll probably have to send it to Nintendo and hope they can transfer your data to a new console, or you're screwed. On the 360, all you have to do is pop off the hard drive and pop it on the new one (admittedly, this is something I've done more than I would like). And even if your hard drive dies, you can still bring up your old account and re-download all your games.

It's unfortunate that, in comparison to the 360, Nintendo seems much more worried about preventing the consumer from having the freedom and ability to do what he wishes with his console. And yet, ironically, their system is easier to hack thanks to the inclusion of the same SD slot that the regular consumer can do virtually nothing with.

Why would he insult the only people who would ever hear or care about what he's saying? Oh, I know, he's an idiot!

Is it so much to ask for Nintendo representatives to pretend to care about their most loyal audience?

A better question would be:

"Is it too much to ask for Company heads in Europe to stop being dumbasses?"

Have so many of you forgotten the comments by Sony Europe's head that caused an uproar on this site as well?

Insulting your fan base is always a good marketing decision. Now if they could only start lying...

I emailed Nintendo a few months back to tell them I wouldn't be buying Guitar Hero for the Wii since it didn't have downloadable content, which is directly related to them not having good a good storage solution.

Let's hope the other directors in Nintendo aren't quite as stupid. Because if they don't eventually release a harddrive attachment for the Wii, it could be in serious trouble.

I'm sure Nintendo will come out with a new storage format for the Wii.... but by the time they do it everyone who cared about playing all those games will have already played them or forgotten, so it won't sell well and they'll think they were right for not having one in the first place.

Yeah, only geeks and otaku want it. Also, nobody is interested in playing video games online. Thanks Nintendo.
