You know how it goes. You go to the big box store around the holidays, looking for the hot new game system for little Timmy, and it's not there. Instead, you find soccer moms swarming around and signs posted on when the next shipment might be coming. It only takes a couple of holiday seasons of this to be totally tired of the song and dance. Maybe that's why CNBC asked Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime how the scene is going to look this year.
"From our standpoint, we're prepared," Fils-Aime told CNBC. "We have a tremendous amount of product in inventory, we've been flowing product into retail. We do not expect to have shortages on our products."
Don't they always say that? Running out is a good thing for Nintendo, though.
"I'd love to have that happen, but we're not seeing that happen this year," Reggie said smugly.
I know there are a lot of $199 Wii systems on lists for Santa this year, not to mention replacments for aging DS and DS Lites. You had better be right, Reggie.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
2. Shouldn't everyone who wants a Wii have one by now? Seriously. It would've been really interesting if they had released the Wii HD to coincide with the PS3 Slim.
And there may be less of a shortage since everyones already got a wii, except for this years 8 year old
In other words, it hasn't it PS2 level sales yet, therefore, the Wii hasn't hit market saturation. When we see over 100 million sold, then we can talk about who doesn't yet have a wii.
I seriously know people who prefer Carnival Games over Super Mario Galaxy, and it pains me.
And I didn't like Super Mario Galaxy.
Fortunately, No More Heroes:DS, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Red Steel 2, Monster Hunter 3 and Sin & Punishment 2 should all be coming out in Q1/Q2 2010.
But how long and how much worthy software later did Sony hit that mark?
Plus we were on still on that 3D graphics thing, and the PS1 was like the fucking blood of the gaming world and blah, blah, blah.
Nothing can touch the PS2. Shit's ridiculous and it was a lucky era for Sony.
Actually, the Wii is on a course to beat the PS2. It's already 10 million units ahead even before the Christmas rush has started this year, in spite of having gone longer than the PS2 without a price cut.

Personally, I think the only way the Wii won't outsell the PS2 is if the economic crisis absolutely slaughters all the markets, including gaming.
Yes, because everyone knows the Wii and its games are mediocre. Everyone obviously feels this way.
I think it'll die down in the next year pretty rapidly but I'll admit I'm only speaking from knowledge of my own homeland here in the States. Globally it's probably gonna stay strong.
Dammit I'm agreeing with you again!
I don't know what it's going to do globally, but I think we are actually experiencing the died-down demand currently; I can see it staying at the current rate for a while. I also think that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to be an extremely important (although currently underhyped) game for increasing Wii demand as the previous title, New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, is the best selling (non-bundled) Mario game of all time.
