Nintendo officially reveals the DSi LL photo

Early adopter burning FTW! Nintendo has announced that, less than a year after the launch of the DSi, a brand new, bigger, better DSi is on the way. We had already heard that a DSi with a bigger screen was coming, but today we have been given the new system's name, as well as the first images and specs.

The DSi LL will be getting a chunkier stylus, but aside from that, standalone pics of the system don't make it look any different from your average DSi. However, put it next to an older model and the significant size difference is clear. The DSi LL is ludicrously larger than the DSi.

The DSi LL will launch with three colors -- dark brown, wine red, and natural white. Nintendo has confirmed that the new version will be more expensive than the original DSi, due to its size. At least in Japan, the LL will ship with some DSiWare already loaded into the internal memory, but details about international launches are thin on the ground for right now (although a Euro release is confirmed).

If you want more information than you need, the DSi LL is 161x91.4x21.2mm in size and weighs 314g. It also has around two hours of extra battery life compared to the DSi.

So there you are. Sorry if you already bought a DSi, but Nintendo has a better one now. The best part is, if you bought DSiWare games for your original DSi, you can't upgrade without losing those games. Gotta love Nintendo and its ability to release ten billion versions of one handheld.

Buying tech, you know there's eventually going to be be a superior product in the near future... but not this near. This strikes me as a real dick move. Coming out this close together, these things must have been in R&D at the same time. Actually didn't Amazon pull something like this, announcing the Kindle DX about two month after releasing the Kindle 2?

This is further proof even video game companies are soulless monstrosities with no higher interest than taking your money and turning a profit, just like any other corporation.

I've been meaning to buy a DS for quite a while now, but they're not making it easy for me with all these upgrades. Now I'm probably gonna wait some more for this new one.

Well, being that this one is not pocket friendly, I can see people still buying the small DSi. I am torn between waiting for this one and the portability of the DSi. But for the ones who bought the DSi and think it's great to have a larger screen (even with the same pixel count, that's what really matters) yeah, it must suck.

How is this a burn for early adopters?

It comes with a bigger screen, and costs a little extra than a normal DSi. The DSi was popular so they made more versions for the customers who want a larger screen, and made it a little more expensive. It's not like games/apps released for this new DSi wont work on your old DSi.

I held off on the DSi, so I'm sort of interested. But it doesn't look like they added the gameboy slot back on. I know GBA is pretty much phased out, but I like being able to pop in older games from time to time.

I like the colors, but I think I'm going to stick with the Lite for now.

Sadly, this version will sell in droves as people flock to have the latest model.

Sigh.

That's a good point. If they're making it bigger, maybe they should have put the GBA slot back in.

Wait, size is suddenly an acceptable excuse to jack up the price again? It makes sense when things get smaller and more powerful, but...

Looks like both companies are at war, in competition to annoy as many people as possible who buy their handheld.

At least the PSP Go didn't make the 3000 model inferior, which looks to be the case with this...

I said it before, I'll say it again. This looks to be aimed at older people playing stuff like Brain Age. Bigger screens for better visibility, bigger stylus, easier to hold with wrinkly hands, etc.

Glad i held off on that DSi purchase!

I'm liking the Wine red, and I'm more than happy to sacrifice a bit of portability for nice big screens. I rarey walk anywhere, so the fact that this might not fit so comfortably in a trouser pocket, doesn't matter as it will still fit in my car i assume.

So, how is it that the bigger screen model gets a longer battery?

In either case, the longer battery is a step towards actually getting my interest piqued.

Crack that bastard where it lets me NOT play with a NOT R4 and you gots yourselfs a deal, Nintendo...

Anyway, this one looks to big for me, and I all ready bought a DSi, no need to upgrade.

the resolution WILL be better on this DSi, right?

Remember years ago when video games didn't give a FUCK about the elderly?

good times, good times.

I swear to god it if it wasn't for Mario, Zelda, and the occasional good 3rd party game for Nintendo's Systems, I would be leading a crusade right now about how Nintendo is ruining my favorite hobby.

i'm sure as hell no upgrading since already owning a DSi, isn't portable gaming supposed to be portable? DSiLL looks about the size of the original DS more or less.

I trademark the name here first, the DSiLL (XD lol)

Anyone who buys this is an idiot. You should just wait for the DSi LL P7. It comes with a longer name and a bigger price.

Simple question, what does the LL stand for?

I have not updated from my DSLite from 2007, and I kinda feel good I didnt already. This one looks interestingly huge, but I still think it's too early to update.

I really don't know what's going on at Nintendo, but I really think despite them not saying so, they have themselves in a race with iPhone.

I might invest in one of these, the sucker I am, eventually. However, I already have a DS Lite, and I'm eagerly awaiting a proper DS2 with much better spec, and I doubt the guts of this one have changed. The DS is a good few years old now and frankly, its time to upgrade its guts, which are still that cut down N64 stuff from 96'. Cheaper, yes, but fair to us, a big no.

I hope Nintendo stop dicking round with these updates, and just give us what we really want, DS2.

That looks horrible and uncomfortable to use. And that stylus...urgh. I already though the DSi's stylus was too big, I like the original stylus much better. Overall, I'd say this was a downgrade, since my DSi's battery life is already great and the screens are more than big enough. Anything more is just silly.

Just when I was thinkin Nintendo was slowly rising, they decide to relaunch the same console a 4th time.

With News link this, don't be surprised if the Wii HD Arrives before you even expected.

This strikes me as a very bad move by Nintendo. Even if they wanted to release a bigger model, why did they put it out so quickly, especially if they're going to make it so hard for people to transfer programs?

Actually all I want is a DS designed like the DS phat but with the features of a DSi and a GBA slot. All these new versions all seem to be fixing shit that isn't broken.
