Nintendo offering a brilliant solution to Wii storage woes, SD cards photo

There was something interesting that popped out of our pseudo-liveblog of the Nintendo Fall press conference in Tokyo that deserves a bit of illumination if you missed it. Apparently, Nintendo is aware that its consumer base is having a problem with storage. One of the announcements at the event was a solution – more SD cards.

It was a stroke of brilliance and obviously we should all bow down to the mighty think-tank that Nintendo has behind the curtain. Instead of something trivial like a hard drive which has the propensity to hold over 6.5 gigabytes worth of stuff, Nintendo has decided that SD cards should now carry the burden of Virtual Console releases. Soon, every Wii owner will be able to download purchased content directly to an SD card and then put the information on the Wii at their leisure.

Obviously, Nintendo spent a long time thinking about this move and we can do nothing but stare in awe at the brilliance of execution and the ingenuity displayed by allowing consumers to purchase, but still be hassled about space concerns. Bravo!

So your saying that if you want a new game you have to copy something off your Wii onto the card, then put on the new game from the card back onto the Wii?

Fucking brilliant!

Bravo

Can't Nintendo do an update to let us play stuff on the SD card? I mean pirates have been doing it for a while now with the DS and the Wii homebrew so Nintendo must be able to think of something.

So they're basically telling us we're fucked if we want mass storage for our DLC and they'll be no use of the USB ports whatsoever for it either. FUCKING AWESOME!

And this should be "something better than a hard drive"?

...And what's wrong with SD cards?

Honestly, downloadable content for the Wii, games included, has small file sizes. SD cards are also dirt cheap, so they'll do the job very well, in my opinion. Yes, I agree that the USB ports are sitting there pointlessly right now, but SD cards will be a fine solution.

The problem here is that we can't play stuff directly off of those SD cards, as Xelotath pointed out. If they fix that, then everything will be fine.

Throw in SDHC support in a future model and I won't have any complaints about this.

"The problem here is that we can't play stuff directly off of those SD cards, as Xelotath pointed out. If they fix that, then everything will be fine."

The problem is not so much the SD cards as the fact that this minor change to the way the Wii Shop Channel works is hardly a solution. It deletes at most one extra step in a multistep process of juggling files around. As for VC games being small, well, yeah, if you're not downloading N64 or TurboCD games, they are pretty small. But then there are files for game saves, like the uncopyable save file for Brawl which clocks in at over 100 blocks. Oh, and WiiWare games are on average quite a bit bigger than VC games.

if only there was some kind of device with magnetic plates that record data and that are dirt cheap.
we'd call them "resistant drives".

@ pedrovay2003: The biggest problem is that copying data to and from SD cards on the Wii takes a ridiculously long time (it's usually quicker to just delete and redownload games). If we could play directly from them as you and Xelotath said, I wouldn't be quite as annoyed with this news.

If the games show up on the Channels menu thingy (whatever it's called) and load straight from the card I won't mind. If it's anything else I'm going to be pissed.

Man, i didn't even connected my Wii to the internet. So yeah, no storage issues here, although, when i do connect it (mainly because of The Conduit and Animal Crossing), i think i'll star to notice. SD cards are decent, but they could really use a USB storage device or whatever.

It does seem rather odd that they didn't just decide to expand the system memory across the SD card. The whole VC/WiiWare catalogue can't be more than 16GB, or so . . . and by the winter economic season, those cards will be dirt cheap.

"If I still played my Wii I might be upset about this."

If you don't, then WTF are you doing bothering to tell us? Oh, that's right. You're trolling. My bad.

Anyway, has Nintendo said specifically that content cannot be played directly from the SD card? I hear a lot of conjecture about it, but I haven't seen anything specifically from Nintendo saying that data would have to be transferred back and forth. Can anyone provide a link from Nintendo saying this?

To force the user to go back and forth is stupid and unnecessary, especially when there is already DRM on the games to prevent you from moving them from one console to another. Will it be slower than reading from RAM? Yes, of course, but unless you're talking about a sh*tload of data, I don't see it being the problem that a lot of people are making it out to be.

Too bad we can't just add something like laptop RAM to the console itself. Oh, well. This is still more than adequate, considering the alternative is no extra RAM at all!

i already have two Semi-official Sandisk labeled wii SD cards (one in the console, one empty on the side)

Seriously, the wii uses SD cards anyway, how does this make any difference at all.

Just give us a damm hard drive, 80GB will more than do and its not like one will be overly expensive in today's world and give us an online service comparable to Xbox Live (with Dowloadable Content, Friends lists that don't require us to enter a 24 digit code)

For such a nuanced problem that the space issue is, its peculiar that not loading (or, if in fact you CAN load from the SD card) hasn't been stated specifically and clearly in one direction or the other.

I just wish Nintendo would do away with their nonsensical moonspeak "block" system. I don't think this would irritate me so much if I knew by looking at a card how much it would be able to hold.

WAIT.

You're telling me that you can't even PLAY stuff from the SD cards (even though those hackers on the homebrew scene let you do that with noooo problems).

We can DOWNLOAD stuff to them which isn't all that different from downloading them on the Wii and moving them to SD cards... so, their solution is to take out a step that is meaningless?

FUCK YOU NINTENDO. JUST... FUCK YOU.
