Nintendo has recently revealed that it's discussing the possibility of creating an old-school top-down Legend of Zelda for the 3DS. Using A Link to the Past as an example, Shigeru Miyamoto is named among those who want to exploit the sense of depth that older Zelda games used. 

"Well actually, even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games," said series producer Eiji Aonuma. "In particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds.

"That’s something that might be interesting to do, so I would say there might be a possibility of something like that in the future."

Only a war criminal could dislike A Link to the Past, so the idea of having an all-new game in that vein is like a mini-Christmas in my brain. Yes Nintendo, please do this. Do it a thousand times.

I don't think everyone is on the same page here...
It would be a top down zelda like LttP with 3d effects for all the cool height change stuff, not LttP remade like ocarina.

All I can say is that it better be a god damn remake. I don't want a port.

I want NEW content, I've already beaten LttP a good couple times, I DON'T need to play the exact same game again.

Hear me nintendo, REMAKE THE ORACLE GAMES. Add in a better inventory system, mash it up into one game, allowing the player to start whichever journey they wish to first, EXPAND on the third portion of the game that had to be cut down and toss in some wifi functionality for ring trading!!

...Or just release the games on the eShop, I'd be happy with either restoration of the Oracle games.

Ok, let me see if I get this straight. Remaking a 7 year old game is a-OK, while remaking a 13 years old(Ocarina) and an almost 20 years old(Link to the Past) game is stupid and franchise-milking. Nintendo makes good games, such good games sell, if Nintendo can dispense the manpower to remake some titles, wonderful. As soon as it screws up the making of new games, I'll freak out like the negative nancies in the audience, but so far I'd say I'm pretty satisfied.

Link to the Past is my all time favorite Zelda ever (and I've played them all, even that 3DO abomination) so I'm all for this if they do it. The sooner the better!

I interpreted this as ALttP being re-released as a downloadable "3D Classic," but I would be beside myself with joy if Nintendo decided to make a new top-down 2D Zelda in the style of ALttP, LA, and the Oracle games. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks just didn't do much for me.

I think destructiod has it all wrong. The original Zelda game being made for the 3ds and A link2dpast 3d remake are two completely different games. Im sure I read somewhere that the Zelda 3ds would be more like a console game and less like it's ds counterparts. Nintendo was probably just talking about remaking a link2dpast in 3d.
