Nintendo may make a new 'Link to the Past' for 3DS photo

Nintendo has recently revealed that it's discussing the possibility of creating an old-school top-down Legend of Zelda for the 3DS. Using A Link to the Past as an example, Shigeru Miyamoto is named among those who want to exploit the sense of depth that older Zelda games used.

"Well actually, even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games," said series producer Eiji Aonuma. "In particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds.

"That’s something that might be interesting to do, so I would say there might be a possibility of something like that in the future."

Only a war criminal could dislike A Link to the Past, so the idea of having an all-new game in that vein is like a mini-Christmas in my brain. Yes Nintendo, please do this. Do it a thousand times.

I'm curious to know more. Would they re-create the game in 3D with gameplay in the vein of OoT, or would they just enhance the visuals with 3D?

The Link to the Past levels in the new DSi/eShop Four Swords game are a good sign.

If it's Zelda, I will buy it. Hell, if it's first party Nintendo I will buy it.

Fully agree with you. A Link to the Past was a blast and remaking it with a 3D effect sounds finally like an argument for me to buy a 3DS. :D

Ya know... I mean, this is a neat idea and everything, but you ever think maybe Nintendo ought to try something different? I just wonder how long they can get by with putting all their eggs in the same two baskets. I don't know, just a thought.

I think Aonuma has been trolling us for a while,he says exciting shit that gives us permaboners without actually saying it outright.
He's probably in his office in Japan with a troll face as he watches us get hyped from things that may possibly happen.

AONUMA!!!

@Tristrix: It's not like they're not evolving their franchises. As long as there's balance beetween looking back and looking ahead, I'm all for it. When it comes to new franchises, well, that's a totally different thing. New japanese franchises simply CANNOT get a foothold on western market nowadays, for whatever reason, and Nintendo is not on the most comfortable position to take blind shots.

@Springsteen

They absolutely are evolving the franchises. Galaxy 2 is up there with my favorite games of this generation. I don't dispute that those two baskets I mentioned are the two best IPs in the history of gaming. They absolutely are. I just feel like they're not enough to support a console anymore.

Alright, Nintendo. Take my money. I don't even have a 3DS but I don't care. Just give me the game.

Link to the Past style Zelda with 3D graphics?
So... Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks again?

LTTP is my favorite Zelda game of all time. I don't own a DS, but this would make getting one very tempting.

@Tristix: Totally correct. The fact that I'm willing to shell out the dough for a new console for those franchises alone doesn't mean the average user is willing to. I just don't think there's much they can do. It's not like Nintendo is going to come up with the next big teenager thing like Call of Duty. Anything brand new they may come up with will probably become niche.

@Pomguo - I think they mean more like 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Are the two baskets for new and old games or for Zelda and Mario? Is there a basket for Metroid? And does the Prime series get its own basket? I just need to know how many baskets we're dealing with here.

Dude, I don't know. I didn't think it through that far. Like I said, just a random thought. I was talking about Mario and Zelda but I'm sure you can name a dozen more and call your point proven and I probably wouldn't argue. It's not something I'm losing sleep over. I just considered those two IPs the console-sellers but if you bought a Wii or a 3DS for another reason, there ya go.

If by "new" they mean taking A Link to the Past, making it 3D and repackaging it as "new" then yeah... sounds about right.

I'm all for it. Nearly everything that miyamoto is involved in turns to gold. That man is pure gaming genius. 3 of the gaming franchises he's created have easily won my heart as well as millions of others. I'm ready for another top down Zelda. Lttp, seasons, and ages are some of my favorite Zelda games.

Hmmm, not sure if another top down Zelda is a good idea.
I think most people will agree that Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, which indeed were good games, didn't hold the same standard as Link to the Past and Link's Awakening.

However, a remake of Link to the Past, complete with new dungeons to accommodate for OoT-style gameplay would be fantastic!

How about we see a re release package the GB/GBA zelda games instead?

Actually ..... I know they won't because they would rather piecemeal it to us.... but how about all the Zelda games from NES,SNES & GB/A on one cart. That I would buy the hell out of.

Well they already remade Ocarina of Time to please some fans, they might as well remake the best Zelda game ever made at this point, and do a game similar to A Link to the Past.

I know we already had Four Swords, but clearly the best game in the series needs to be followed up.
