Nintendo made mad bank on Black Friday, broke records photo

Here's some broken records to let you know how well Nintendo did on this past Black Friday:

  • 3DS sales up 325% over Nov. 6
  • Half a million Wii systems sold on Black Friday, the most ever
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword the fastest-selling Zelda, sold 535,000 copies
  • Super Mario 3D Land the fastest-selling Mario portable, 500,000 sold since launch

I get the 3DS, as it's a hot Christmas item, and Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land are both great games that should be under every tree, but it's really surprising to hear that the Wii broke Nintendo's one-day record this year. More than 500,000 in one day? Maybe it's that new price point. Or the blue color. Or something I missed.

As for the 3DS, it's already beating out the first-year Nintendo DS sales numbers, and in only 8 months. The holiday isn't even over, and Mario Kart 7 is still coming this season.

Enjoy your money, Nintendo!

I didn't even think there were that many people who didn't own a Wii yet.

Nothing compared to the bank Microsoft made, but still pretty good! Even if they did TERRIBLE this year, software-wise.

I would say I told you so. At least about the 3ds. But I am not petty.

Already sold more than the ds did in its first year in only 8 months is impressive.

I am sure microsoft or sony would love to say that about any system theyve done.

Nintendo think how much better you would have done if you had more games for the Wii this year. Is Nintendo a guy?

@Fuzunga I was wondering the same damn thing. The Wii having sold over 89 million units at this point, who DOESN'T have one now?

But, but, but... Nintendo is a dinosaur! It's doomed!! Haven't you heard? There is a new market for casual mobile games. That OBVIOUSLY means that the existing market for consoles and dedicated handhelds are just going to vanish into the ether!

I don't mean to sound like a nintendo fanboy, and trust me I'm not. But where are all those people comparing nintendo to Sega and how they were probably going to fail with the 3DS because of the "changed" mobile market and everyone's reluctance to buy $40 portable games? Those that considered it a flop? Yeah... I think this proves you wrong. :D

I think what also contributed to these numbers it the fact that gaming is becoming more and more popular every day. Expect bigger numbers in the next years.

well, $99 is close to the cheapest way to get get netflix on your tv now. I mean, literally that is why we bought another ps3 this year, sowe can have nutflax upstairs and downstairs.

Plus $99 for a system with a pretty decent backlog of fun games is a good deal for anyone.

Now watch as Kotaku either completely ignores these numbers or STILL manages to find a way to spin this as negative doom and gloom for Nintendo just because the 3DS is still getting in the way of their iPhone dominated game time/coverage.

It seems now the Vita is the upcoming doom and gloom target for next year's easy page hits until the WiiU hits later in the year.

It was a straight bill, imo there was no reason to pass it up unless you hate nintendo, not the best platform this generation, but after all these years it has a nice little library that can be bought at a budget no less. That being said that is a shit ton of Wii's after sales dips and what not.

I am really glad the 3DS is starting to go up. Already played through Arkham City and Uncharted 3, and I'm in the middle of a Skyward Sword playthrough. Super Mario 3D Land is the next in the list, and will hopefully revive my dead 3DS

Lots of people got rid of their Wiis after purchasing them. Perhaps the new Zelda convinced a few to repurchase.

That or the Wal-Mart thing.

@caraleo:

Maybe if you restrict yourself to only playing games with Mario and Zelda in them. Go Google the following 2012 releases and expand your gaming horizons:

Beyond the Labyrinth
Bravely Default
Code of Princess
Fantasy Life
Good People Die
Guild 01
Heroes of Ruin
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Metal Gear Solid 3D
Rhythm Thief
Tales of the Abyss
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy
Time Travelers
Mutant Mudds

Luigi's mansion 2
Resident evil R
Kid icarus (should)
I know you're just joking though. Thought I would take advantage of your comment to make a point.

Some gaming journalists and analysts will never learn, but suffice to say, never count Nintendo out. It seems the people that want Nintendo to go third party are the HD loving crowd, people that aren't being catered to by Nintendo, oblivious to the fact that Nintendo caters to everyone, gamers and nongamers, and if it wasn't for Nintendo, let's be honest here, the video game industry's growth would be stunted.

Good for Nintendo for having a stellar black friday this year. I really think that $99 for the Wii should be the norm now, as I'm sure it helped with those amazing black friday numbers. Now if they have an amazing Christmas with the Wii and 3DS, they can get out of the "Nintendo is doomed/needs to go third-party/Nintendo is in panic mode" and back to the Nintendo that we know and love, unless your name is Jim Sterling, of course.

Considering that Zelda is THE core title for the Wii, that seems kind of low when you look at the install base. Good for them but I wonder...

Doesn't surprise me one bit.

Those 3DS bundles are super hot..If I didn't already have an ambassador Cosmo black, all the free games given out other then the ambassador games and OoT I would have totally jumped on Gamestop's deal yesterday for the special OoT bundle with an extra $20 gift card. But because they still won't allow you to transfer ambassador status to a new 3DS I couldn't trade mine in for the new hotness.

The Mario bundle would have been a very close second -The flame red looks great and mario looks like its a must have. VERY smart to release that bundle for this season.

Online at least its almost impossible to find Mario Land 3D in-stock or for its suggested retail price. Amazon sold out and their secondary retailers pushed the price up over $60 at one point, lol. Walmart's site (yesterday at least) was sold out, and I ran into that in a few other places. So good for them.

The Wii thing is surprising.. Is that bundle the one without the Wi-Fi? no ads have said anything about the no wi-fi swap out if there has been one, so its safe to assume people are going to assume its there. People are going to be mighty disappointed if they it was and they were looking for some (albeit weak) wi-fi action.

@Fuzunga

I'm willing to bet there's plenty of people who traded them in and probably saw this as an opportunity to get back to it.

Not at all trying to put down their success, but it's surprising 535k copies in a week is the biggest launch for a zelda game ever. Maybe I've just been desensitized from all those stories saying CoD, Skyrim, Fallout, Batman, Halo, GTA, ect selling 1-4+ million in the first couple days. I realize zelda isn't really nintendo's biggest property but it puts it into perspective how zelda compares to the competition sales wise.

The Wii buys are obviously idiots who sold their console (who the heck does that? I store them until I buy new games. Never had a reason to "sell" a console unless I got a better model) and are now rebuying it for Skyward Sword

If you look at the sales data Nintendo has never been a big pre-order opening week type of company, their games tend to be long term sellers with amazing legs.

You don't need to look any further than the 535,000 copies of Skyward Sword sold to understand why over 500,000 Wii consoles got sold.

What a waste of good money, people should buy PS3 and 360s instead of the wii crap.

Nintendo will never see a cent from me or any people that i know, i hack wiis for people for free and copy them 2T of wii games for free too, just to hurt even by a bit nintendo sales.
