Nintendo laughs at your price cuts: Wii and DS prices remain the same photo

When a console has been out for more than a year, you can usually expect a price cut on the horizon. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have had prices lowered since launch, but the Wii laughs at them, keeping its cost and still outselling the pair of them. Nintendo has no plans to change that either.

"Our earnings projection for the year is not based on hardware price cuts, and I don't think we are going to need them," stated Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, possibly while laughing hysterically, shooting off bottle rockets and riding a golden donkey on a floor crafted from naked, writhing 18-year-olds. Just because he could do that, if he wanted.

Nintendo is claiming that its operating profit more than doubled in the past year, and although that fell short of expected targets, who's really counting when you're as rich as Nazis? Nintendo is still riding high, with the Wii and the DS currently showing no major signs of slowing down their respective success. If you're waiting for a price drop on either of those machines, get a chair, for you'll be waiting a while.

OH MY GOD JIM YOU'RE SO BIASED STOP HATING ON NINTENDO!

Nah, seriously though you can see their logic. There areen't exactly a ton of Wiis shelves with the current price tag, so where's the impetus to drop it? It's not like the PS3's ever going to be cheaper.

they're saving the price cuts for the release of the wii slim.

What about the DS Super Lite? Won't that cause a price cut?

I just wished they stared bundling nunchucks with wiimotes. dualshock3, wirless 360 and wimmote+nunchuck are all $50 or over. GBA connectivity is starting to look cost effective

This is brilliance, and i applaud it. I mean, can you even find the damn thing at retail price as it is? Waiting beyond this long to make a price cut sucks hard, but it is smart business.

The earliest I see a price drop is when they gut the Wii's innards and replace it with an Amiga CD32.

They're still the cheapest consoles available in their respective fields so is a price cut really necessary? If they did cut the prices they would only go down by like $30 or so.

They'll lower the price on the Wii when people stop collecting flyers and lining up outside of Best Buys on Sunday mornings because a shipment of 7 is coming in. Until then, they have no reason to.

That, or when the 360 drops below the price of a Wii, which I could see happening by Christmas.

Dick move? Sure. Smart business? Yes indeedy.

Nintendo is running too far too fast. After the Mario Kart release, where is the next big "everyone can play-it" game? I know there are enough suckers that will buy mini game compilations after another, but the long term for peopes who have an attention span for games longer than a year or so isn't so bright. Even after 2 years of Wii, I can name 2 games I want to play. I haven't yet purchased one, and won't for a while. SMG & LoZ:TTP. In the near future, the no-attention-span consumers that bought the Wii will have moved onto the next pop cultre "it" thing, and you won't find anyone at the big N laughing like this...

Who are they dropping prices to compete with? Playstation 2?

If you're not only outselling but are already the cheapest, I'm not sure there's much call for price dropping...

when the ps3 starts dropping to competative rates you can bet your arse home and wives that nintendo will drop to £99.99 and advertise the hell out of the Wii and its library of games. The gamecube did fantastic when it happened, but this was very late and merely provided a last ditch jump in sales.

In the end it doesnt matter as gaming isnt about the hardware its the software, and unless nintendo can pull out another zelda title for wii b4 the end of the generation, I dont think much is going to change.

Everyone I know who owns a wii enjoy it but view it as a joke next to a 360 or ps3 who maintained the standard of actually upgrading graphics and storage. And thus argue about who will win between sony and microsoft.

Sony hung on quite well due to its fanbase still from the ff7 fanboys (my god these ppl still exsist! its true!) and a rare good game such as drakes fortune and resistence. Now its microsofts turn to see how it fars against the storm of mgs 4, ff13, and ff13 versus.

Remember last generation, when the PS2 remained at a higher price point than the GameCube, despite having been released earlier and having (slightly) less horsepower?

It's like that.

Capitan Obvious is coming... I can see him in the horizon.

The dollar droped a lot, that is not going to help any kind of price cuts.

I'm not surprised, but I do miss the frequent price cuts the Gamecube got. Then again, I already own a wii, so none of this will help.

Hey Jim, you know what I am actually interested. Yes the DS and Wii sales will be always up, but what about the games? and I mean in total, not just the Nintendo brand, Im interested to know how good all Wii games are selling.

Now if only Nintendo would stop dicking around with stuff like Wii Fit and release more, you know, games? Next Zelda? Pikmin? Animal Crossing? Kid Icarus? Starfox? Guys? Hello? *crickets*

when the 360 and ps3 cost 250 then nintendo will lower there prices.

@ Catsithx;

You mean when the PS3 costs £/$250, and the 360 Elite goes to £/$200.

Yeah, Nintendo will only consider dropping the price when sales start dropping, and if so, they only need to do it on the Wii. They have the handheld market strength, so they'll probably wait even longer until they think about a DS price drop.

The prices are reasonable anyway. Price cuts for Wii and DS will happen I'd say around next year.

personally I like my psp a lot more tan my ds- and I only own a lite- but I bought a psp fat and slim- (I hacked all of them though so I guess that kind of sways me- a hacked psp blows a hacked ds out of the water) and only own a wii right now so far as consoles go- I want to go ps3, but I am still looking on the horizon since my main motivation is when unleashed comes out in september for the ps3. personally I don't see why everyone makes the wii vs. the 360/ps3 fight all of the time because honestly, the wii is cool, no it is not the ps3 or 360, but it isn't trying to be them either. everyone knows that the wii does not spec to either of the other consoles, it also costs half as much and is generally more fun at parties- but you will never have the range of personal gaming that you do on the ps3 or 360. I leave it at that

I don't see any reason why Nintendo would need to cut the price on anything.... They're still an unstoppable force.
