When a console has been out for more than a year, you can usually expect a price cut on the horizon. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have had prices lowered since launch, but the Wii laughs at them, keeping its cost and still outselling the pair of them. Nintendo has no plans to change that either.
"Our earnings projection for the year is not based on hardware price cuts, and I don't think we are going to need them," stated Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, possibly while laughing hysterically, shooting off bottle rockets and riding a golden donkey on a floor crafted from naked, writhing 18-year-olds. Just because he could do that, if he wanted.
Nintendo is claiming that its operating profit more than doubled in the past year, and although that fell short of expected targets, who's really counting when you're as rich as Nazis? Nintendo is still riding high, with the Wii and the DS currently showing no major signs of slowing down their respective success. If you're waiting for a price drop on either of those machines, get a chair, for you'll be waiting a while.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Nah, seriously though you can see their logic. There areen't exactly a ton of Wiis shelves with the current price tag, so where's the impetus to drop it? It's not like the PS3's ever going to be cheaper.
That, or when the 360 drops below the price of a Wii, which I could see happening by Christmas.
Dick move? Sure. Smart business? Yes indeedy.
Rich bastards.
If you're not only outselling but are already the cheapest, I'm not sure there's much call for price dropping...
In the end it doesnt matter as gaming isnt about the hardware its the software, and unless nintendo can pull out another zelda title for wii b4 the end of the generation, I dont think much is going to change.
Everyone I know who owns a wii enjoy it but view it as a joke next to a 360 or ps3 who maintained the standard of actually upgrading graphics and storage. And thus argue about who will win between sony and microsoft.
Sony hung on quite well due to its fanbase still from the ff7 fanboys (my god these ppl still exsist! its true!) and a rare good game such as drakes fortune and resistence. Now its microsofts turn to see how it fars against the storm of mgs 4, ff13, and ff13 versus.
It's like that.
The dollar droped a lot, that is not going to help any kind of price cuts.
You mean when the PS3 costs £/$250, and the 360 Elite goes to £/$200.
Yeah, Nintendo will only consider dropping the price when sales start dropping, and if so, they only need to do it on the Wii. They have the handheld market strength, so they'll probably wait even longer until they think about a DS price drop.
and like germany as an entire country starved?
