Nintendo Japan to package 'mature' titles in black boxes photo

Nothing screams "mature" like the color black, and Nintendo Japan is taking note.

Starting this year in Japan, the company will start packing all "Cero C" rated games (for those 15-years-old and up) in black boxes. This is addition to the gigantic "CERO C" label already found on the game's box art, and would also apply to D (17+) and Z (18+) titles. According to Siliconera, it looks like Nintendo's first M-rated title in Japan, Zangeki no Reginleiy will get the black box treatment.

No word on whether or not Nintendo of America will follow suit, but we'll put in the word to find out.

I hope Nintedo Rest of the World starts doing this too. Just for the simple reason that it looks much better than the white cases.

That's weird cuz most of the people I know who are black are far from mature, such as my friend javante....he like viva pinata....a lot.....he scares me

So will the crappy Wii games start coming in brown cases? Or occasionally green?

Colour coding the boxes according to rating seems like a cool idea - though having them only two shades would be best - seeing as I wouldn't want to see this rainbow of crazy shades when I stack the boxes of the games I own.

@Pudge Controls the Weather

LOL

On point though, it makes excellent sense. It would make it a lot easier to pick them out.

If Nintendo reigns in which games get the black box, they might be able to help games like No More Heroes 2 and Sin and Punishment 2.

Anyone want to take bets on how many "Wii has no mature games" activists this will shut up?

Make them cooler and more desirable? That should help kids not buy them.

Please bring this to the states.

The game and the black cases. I might actually notice my Wii games if they had interesting boxart. And I might notice my Wii if it had more mature games.

It's like a win/win, or something like that.

Well parents would probably pay attention to it more than the ESRB ratings.

Is it me or suddenly Nintendo has begun slowly shifting it's focus from the 8yo market to the 16+ one?, preparing the grounds to have equal footing on the next gen of consoles maybe? after all, if the Wii doesn't quite work like the DS it would be unwise to drag the "kiddy game company" tag to that time.

@The Excel: they'll just shift to "Wii has just 1 mature title" activists.

I mean, think about it, parents already complain about giving their kids M rated games, and gamer can be like "um, it's right there on the box." This would just be another push back at that, "look, it had a big M on the box, AND THE BOX WAS A DIFFERENT COLOR THEN ALL THE REST IN THE STORE."
I actually think they should do this with Xbox and PS3 games too. Might help with the whole "blame video games for every murder, ever" thing.

You don't need to build a better box, you need to build a better parent.

I guess that makes things partially easier for the idiots who have ZERO knowledge of what they buy for their kids and can't read ESRB ratings.

Parents will merely confuse the colored box as a special/limited edition version of the game and still buy it.

This isn't going to do anything. Parents will still be dumb and ignorant regardless.

What's concerning is what publishers will have to say about this, since it won't be any of Nintendo's games in such boxes. On top of that, publishers spend a lot of money on game art and advertising to sell their games, so covering up a box in box bs is tantamount to cutting their sales exposure, and censorship at worst.

Of course its cool for Nintendo, their shit will sell regardless. IMO, this will just push more dev/pubs onto 360, PS3 and PC. Strangley, this kind of crap is also similar to what Aussie are planning down under, not a good sign.

Hey, putting porn on top shelves worked so well didn't it? Not.

@gohanGVO

Not if the there would be a large poster in the store which says "black wii boxes = mature title" or something like that. But then again, some people still buy things regardless of the warning signs, labels or posters.

@Cowboy TTop Huh? There not covering up the box, they just changed the colour of the box and the Wii logo area.
Publishers have had to deal with different sized/colored boxes for consoles for years, i'm sure they will cope.

I think the only people dragging behind the "Nintendo is for kids" mindset is that of the uninformed. If the colour of the box matched the color of the rating coding of the rating it received in the much ignored sticker it would make things much easier for somewhat informed parents to tell at a glance if something was suitable.

"I see that black box - you put that back right now!"

Of course, the alternative being "Dude, did you just pick up a green boxed game? really? are you 5?"

Zangeki no REGINLEIV is a new arcade-style hack and slash game from Sandlot who have made the same styled games in the past. It comes with M+ support and online co-op.

Well this looks like a good idea. It helps people spot them out easier.

Possible scenario:

*Walks by*, *sees black thing out of the corner of eye*
"Hey what's this?"
etc,etc,etc

*buys game*

those etc's could be the person going home to do research on the game or putting the box back because their child can't play M-rated games.

Also, wasn't a small reason why NSMB was easier to buy was because it had a red box?
