Nintendo is 'working on a solution' to the Wii storage limit photo

Geeks and Otaku, stand proud. Our incessant bitching has finally made it to the ears of the upper brass at Nintendo, and now it seems that they are finally working on some kind of storage solution for the memory-gimped Wii.

After the recent controversy, Nintendo let NoE marketing man Laurent Fischer drop the good news: "We're working on a solution." Nice save! But don't go jumping to conclusions yet; whatever this solution is, it's not external hardware.

"Definitely there's no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area," said Fischer. "It's very obvious and we're perfectly aware of it, but there's nothing we can say beyond this."

"We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it's something that we're working on," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

He did not give any other details, other than say that "this area is fully handled by the development team in Japan."

What do you think this solution will be? Do you think they'll free up some of the SD memory card restrictions?

[Thanks, Coonskin05]

I think they will just allow you to access channels on the SD card. Which would be enough... or access your PC..

I'm with Alex. A software solutions could go a very long way to using the hardware already available to address the issue.

A new Wii sku would be ridiculous, considering the really solid install base, and the problems making enough of the things for new retail

Do they consider a memorycard hardware?

It would be awesome if they released a solution to my total lost in enthusiasm for my Wii. Like a little blue pill or something.

..holy shit I just thought of an awesome post title

Well the main worry for them with us getting to use the SD slot is piracy, think how easy it is to copy a SD card. I'm guessing that they are working out a solution which links the games downloaded to the individual console even after they have been transferred to the SD card.

Huh. I thought there were NO PLANS EVER for more storage. Go Nintendo, backing down on your word, again. Never trusting anything they ever say again...

Unrestricted access of the SD card slot would be the best quick fix.

New Wii with HD? I wont buy it.

Unlocked SD card slot? That would work for me, if it's software based. But I still have to buy a 4GB SD card, which sucks

A firmware update and officially licenced SD cards formatted so stuff on there can only be used on the Wii it was bought on.

Also, didn't Iwata say they were working on this a few months ago?

@niacin

As far as piracy goes, Nintendo's already got it down. You can only play downloaded games on the system you downloaded them on, so just being able to use the SD card would be absolutely fine.

In fact, I think that'd be the best solution of them all. Either that, or straight external storage support via USB in the back.

Alex, you're like a comedian, only minus the funny! :P

I hope that Nintendo understands what it is we're really asking for here. It's not so much that we don't have any place to put our VC titles and WiiWare games, it's that we're fucking fed up with having to delete stuff to make room for other shit. Make that happen Nintendo.

@Wexx: At least this is in a positive direction. Saying "we won't fix this," then saying "okay, we'll fix it" is better than "we'll do this" and then "nevermind, we won't after all."

I think unlocking the SD slot would make the most sense, especially if they can speed up the data transfer rate and make sure SDHC works. With 32GB SDHC available or at least on the horizon, it's a logical step, and one that should be easy to accomplish.

While an external hard drive would be nice, I wouldn't mind them opening up the SD card for use with games. At least it would be a step in the right direction.

As it stands, I have a good amount of VC games and two WiiWare games on my Wii (Dr. Mario and My Life As a King). I think I've got something like 400 blocks left, but had to move games like Gate of Thunder (can't remember if it was 200 or 300 blocks) off to the SD card. I've been holding out on getting anything else, just in case something I really want (re: Earthbound and Super Mario RPG) comes along.

If they let us play games off the SD card...huge improvement. Not the external drive we want...but it's enough to keep us quiet for a while.

Maybe they could do...zipped game files of some sort, that take longer to load up and down, but allowed you to keep more games on the existing hard drive.

I'm going to go with an online storage system of some sort. Most likely they will charge for it, but if they gave people the necessary storage they required, and its fairly priced, I don't think it would be that bad.

I don't think they'd do online storage. I mean, it's already there. You can re-download any WiiWare or VC titles you've deleted from memory. They just need to open up SD card access. Done.

They don't have to make an external hard drive. They just have to unlock the USB ports to let us use our own.

My guess is that they'll just let us play VC and WiiWare games straight from SD cards rather than having to copy them back to our Wiis.

It's about time, but opening SD cards options is just the tip of the iceberg: we need a bloody hard drive, but given the record of nintendo regarding storage solutions (i.e. famicom disk system and 64DD), it's not very likely! Aw, I made myself sad...

If they opened up the SD cards, I'd be content. But until they do something, I'm pretty much done with WiiWare and VC games.

The only way that I will possibly rejoice at this is if the simultaneously allow 3rd party DLC, like with Rock Band or GH. Otherwise, the extra storage isn't going to mean anything for most people.

So, yeah, it's great that they're addressing the issue of storage, but how about the rest? No word of integrating DLC = no rejoicing for me.

Not hardware based? Are they seriously considering online storage? That will suck beyond belief. Games != e-mails.

*Bizznet: "It's good to know the Wii is finally going to see a solution."

Yeah, go ahead a praise the company for announcing they have a "solution", without knowing what the solution is. In corporate lingo, "solutions" are never solutions. Solutions are actual products you can see.

Hey, we have a solution for the 360 overheat issues! It's called a class-action lawsuit deflector... I mean, extended warranty!
