Reggie Fils-Aime, the man with meatballs of steel, has stated that Nintendo's ultimate goal is to capture all of us, and hardcore shooter fans are up next on the list of souls he wishes to claim. With The Conduit and Dead Space: Extraction, the pork flavored president believes that the "core" gamer is his for the taking.
"We have near-term, mid-term and long-term opportunities," he claims. "The near-term opportunity is the consumer who owns a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360 and has been bad-mouthing Wii to their friends. We can reach that consumer with games like The Conduit or Tiger Woods with Wii Motion Plus."
Reggie's mid-term goal is to get the more mainstream consumer who "just needs a little extra incentive" to get a Wii, something he believes he can do with Motion Plus and New Super Mario Bros. The long-term goal is to seize the hearts of those who don't play, and have zero interest in videogames.
"We think we win over the Halo audience with something like The Conduit, a multiplayer, online, shooting experience, or Dead Space Extraction," he adds. "And you know what? Once those people buy into Wii, they'll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus."
I'll pass, thanks.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The post was in the cblogs for some reason, which don't use HTML, but since it's not on the main page (which I presume does use HTML) the tags are working correctly.
I have a problem with this statement. Not least is it a load of bollocks, but isn't The Conduit third-party, and Halo MS-GameStudios?
Wii is good for some people, that's fine. Just not for everyone and I suppose Nintendo will have to learn that.
Does he not realize that both the PS3 and 360 have dozens of quality online FPS games?
Oh and Modern warfare 2> Anything that is "hardcore" on the wii.
@sickNasty
Don't forget RPGs and fighters that aren't forced to hold back because of the controller.
I have a Wii (well, still have, by virtue of No More Heroes 2) and I can honestly say I will never buy either of those games or The Conduit. I had a ton of fun with Double Dash because of the two-person karts and then Mario Kart went downhill, back to the same old thing. Couldn't care less about The Conduit or The Grinder until one is proven and stops looking like a generic alien shooter with a protagonist trying too hard to be cool.
PS3 KICKS ASS!
Not if they think it looks a bit rubbish.
You can't just throw out a shooter and say "right, the hardcore gamers will lap that up," especially if they've been playing CoD, Halo or Killzone 2 the whole time.
There are no good PURE FPSs on the Wii so far. The Conduit won't change that. High Voltage may come to learn one thing or two in the process, but it just doesn't seem like they've nailed it this time.
As a platformer/adventure enthusiast with lots of non-gaming friends, I'm pretty much satisfied with the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy is possibly the most cohesive, fun platformer I've ever played and there's always Zelda or the promise of it. Either way, for FPSs I stick with the other 2 consoles. By the way, why did hardcore become synonymous with FPSs?
Games on the wii are not looking good.
Looks are not everything Jim, Little King´s story is amongst the best games i ever played and it does not look good as a ps360 game.
If you play FPS games on xbox/ps3, you might find the wii controls of The Conduit appealing (probably nothing else beyond that). If you played Dead Space on a next-gen console, you might want to check out it's prequel.
Sure, if you take Reggie's comment as "OMG Teh Conduit is bettar then Killzoen!!!!1" then yes, he'd come across as being bonkers.
A) Doesn't understand core gamers
...or...
B) Does understand core gamers and knows that they won't be satisfied with those games, but still has to put on the company face and act like they will be satisfied.
i own both a xbox 360 and a wii and to b honest i played more on my wii then my xbox.
most games on the 360 i can also play on my pc or are fps games which i am not intrested in at all.
i care more about good artstyle and polished games and are original and fun then technical amazing looking games which are generic.
Aside from the very very purdy graphics, what do the 360 or PS3 offer in the way of games that hasn't already been done on the previous consoles? I'm not saying that the newer games for those systems are bad. There are quite a few that are good, but do any of them really do anything differently compared to their older brethren? When I see most FPS games on the 360 or PS3, I think, "Golly, those graphics sure look pretty good, but is that it?"
This is what pisses me off about the 360 and the PS3: Beyond making everything look better, it's still all the same! In fact, the only reason I considered getting a 360 recently was because of Red Faction Guerrilla, and that's because I can actually interact with the environment! That's what I've been wanting to see in games with their higher processing power: More freedom for the player to interact with the environment and do things you couldn't do in the older consoles.
But I hardly see any of that on the PS3 or the 360. And that's why I'm really excited for the new Silent Hill, where the game is designed around letting the player interact with the game's world in ways that's not possible on the the other consoles. I'm not defending Nintendo, far from it. They have done things to piss me off, but on the other hand, the other two haven't done much to wow me with their graphical horsepower, especially when you don't do anything with it!
Anyways, what this boils down to is thus: I got a Wii, I got plenty of good games for the system. I got games that take advantage of the controls, and more traditional games that work just fine with the Wii Controls. So why buy a more expensive console with more expensive games, when I can get the same experience on a cheaper console, with cheaper games. If the only difference in the gameplay experience is graphics, then that's something I'll gladly sacrifice as long as I'm still having fun. Which is probably why my PSP and DS collection is extremely large right now.
You are right hardcore gamers won't play a game if it looks like crap. They will play a game if they want to increase their achievement score.
That is what Nintendo needs. An overall score system.
"Once those people buy into Wii, they'll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus."
Tiger Woods? Wii Fit Plus?, i'd sure love to know what old Reg smokes to come up with this level of insanity in his quotes. I think Nintendo has wooed the shot term (read: Casuals) long enough, problem is they won't stop until they actually start losing money with them, but by that moment, when they turn to their core audience for support they will already have been absorbed by either MS or Sony (which might have happened already). It's gonna be a sad, sad end for Nintendo, but certainly not an undeserved one.
@edgydude
too right, just what I was thinking. I know that I for one have let my wii gather dust in favour of my 360, and I even camped out for the damn waggle box. really though it's not surprising, as nintendo has been slowly circling the drain since gamecube, despite what their bankbooks say today.

Btw, I shall ask, you have PSN and LIVE, with friend list, status, game invitations, simple and clean way of getting in a game with some friends, so, you expect to change that with Friend Codes?! The Conduit's devs already said that they can't change that structure.
If I rented this game, I'd probably return it and keep playing Killzone 2.
@Pedrovay2003
EASILY. 4 player coop similar to L4D? Even if the game is a pile of shit, it'll still be a blast to play.
1)Horrible graphics (even for last gen level): Again, the main offenders are games like DR:CTYD from Capcom, i still can't believe they used the same engine as RE4:WE, i just can't, and if they did, they just did a crappy use of it, Smash Bros Brawl is a perfect example of awesome graphics that aren't HD.
2)Go core or go casual, but not both unless you do it right: I'll unleash the ire of many here, but an example of this is Madworld, yes, Madworld, how come? Madworld was marketed as a hardcore brawler for the Wii complete with gushing blood and limbs a-flying, so far so good, but if that is the case, then why the hell it takes a group of enemies around 30 secs to decide to launch a punch against you?, if you want to make casuals feel as cool as regular gamers, make a casual difficulty level and let people choose, don't force the rest of us to go through the whole damn game to actually unlock the real 'normal' difficulty level (which seems is now known as 'Hard' difficulty).
3) Stop resurrecting old IPs, resurrect GOOD old IPs or at the very least fix the original problems they had, example given: You know, i'd give my left nut to see MGS3 on the Wii, there are plenty of good IPs that can be properly brought to the Wii, so please stop bringing crap. As a counter example of this point i'll mention Rygar, not even the tiny details such as the arm sticking through the golden disc armor were fixed, just tacked some waggle and release, which brings me to my next point.
4)Cut the damn waggle over use: If anyone played RE4 Wii they'll know that not only it feels just as good as the original on GC or PS2, it actually feels even better on the Wii, why? because motion controls actually are properly used, not just tacked on as gimmicks or so poorly and unprecisely implemented that they are hindrances instead.
5)Stop releasing half-baked bug-filled games: Deadly Creatures and Tomb Raider Underworld are perfect examples here, anyone that played DC will attest to the level of bugs that happen when horned lizards appear, from epileptic seizures from said lizards to bugs so bad that you have to restart the whole chapter to fix it (not even loading a save will work, you have to restart the chapter). TR is even worse as the Wii version had a notorious bug on the Thailand ruins level where a missing lever prevented you from going further. I'll admit this is not limited to the Wii, but when you are taking risks on a console, it improves the odds for you not to release defective games.
I'm having some hopes with coming releases, but i'm also considering getting a 360, i'm just to damn tired of waiting for a decent third party release, next gen, i'm waiting at least a year before choosing a console, if it's certainly true that pretty graphics don't make up for gameplay, it's also true that bad graphics with crappy gameplay is much worse.
who the hell wants to play an online shooter thats already sloppy to begin
with on a wireless connection
'I got a Wii, I got plenty of good games for the system. I got games that take advantage of the controls, and more traditional games that work just fine with the Wii Controls. Err, the 360 is cheaper than the Wii and I don't know what country you live in but the games cost the same. True the PS3 is more expensive but it can also do a lot more. Also your points about pushing games with motion control is being addressed if you paid ANY attention to E3. So not only will the PS3 and 360 have more horsepower they'll have more accurate motion control too.
Don't get me wrong I like my Wii, if only for games like No More Heroes, Zelfa, Super Mario Galaxy and Trauma Centre but many of your points smack of fanboyism. Why can't the love be spread between all the consoles?
