Only yesterday I brought you Nintendo's most pompous claim yet -- that gamers were apparently bored until Nintendo rubbed the cobwebs from their eyes and introduced our messiah in the Wii. However, according to research, it is Nintendo that's the boring one.
A recent Japanese report revealed that nearly 75% of Wii owners haven't touched their consoles in a long time, and goes on to question why there hasn't been the same kind of excitement for software that we saw with Wii Sports. For all the millions of sales that Nintendo has had with the Wii, it seems the software attach rate is rubbish. Perhaps a case of people buying based purely on hype before realizing they have nothing to do.
The report came courtesy of Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura (whose company publishes Famitsu). He adds that DS sales are expected to ship over the 30 million mark by 2009. No surprise there, and well deserved for the little portable that could.
Back to the Wii, a similar report from IGN concludes that 67% of customers haven't gone near a Wiimote in some time. This makes me wonder -- when those caught up in the Wii fad finally have what they want, what's next for Nintendo? Right now the company can sit on its hands and watch the money roll in, but it's going to want to reel the fish it's hooked before we see more white waggle boxes on Ebay.

It just needs 3rd party developers to bother to do more than make shitty ports.
Anyway!
I'm excited about a couple of the 3rd party titles coming our way. Specifically Medal of Honor: Heroes2 and No More Heroes. However, I know MOH:H2 will struggle because of it's lack of voice.
Some will of course be crap, but I'm hoping for a few surprise gems
But yeah, Nintendo needs to start having some makeout parties..or something..
I fully disagree with you.
Get on the fucking ball, Nintendo. I swear I'll get my tattoo replaced with a piece of shit. You deserve it.
It happens with every console. Sometimes I haven't used my Wii in months, other times it's my 360. It's the nature of the beast. There is never a console that has me playing it from launch until their next generation, not even the PS2.
Oh SNAP!
-points and laughs-
hilariousness
I used the BEST clipart.
I don't play it much.
I play WoW more than Wii.
And my DS.
And my PS2.
I imagine that same would be true for my 360 and/or PS3, if I owned them.
meh.
I'm also not Japanese . . .
Yeah, I haven't been playing with the Wii a lot for new games, but I've been playing the crap out of some Virtual Console releases and dusted off Twilight Princess again because it's just that good. Also I just picked up Excite Truck which I love. I got a lot of joy out of Super Paper Mario. Then there is Dewy's Adventure which seems pretty neat. Plus Super Mario Galaxy is just around the corner, Zack and Wiki and NiGHTS are coming soon and then there's Brawl and Mario Kart Wii looks like it might be good. Oh and I've played Metroid Prime 3 and really liked it but haven't got around to picking it up yet.
So anyway, I'm not bored at all and I'm not seeing the problem. I think there's a decent bit of quality titles for a one year old console. The 360 seems to have about as much games that I'm interested in and it's a two-year old console. Either way I have both and I don't have the money to get every good game that comes out as soon as it comes out anyway. On the 360 side, finally picked up BioShock but then I still really want Mass Effect, The Orange Box, Halo 3 and Beautiful Katamari. Damn man, need more money.
btw i like watching nintendo press conferences :(
Meh.
Wii does need some more developers, though. Let's hope they get better next year.
I'm glad they're getting some pressure.
Seriously though, if you're looking for a new game to beat every month, Wii probably isn't the console for you. And it probably still won't be in another year or so either. To me, Nintendo has always been the party console. Whenever my friends would come over, we never touched my PS2. We'd always play things like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart on Gamecube.
Even now when I play my Wii, I'm not playing Zelda or Metroid. I'm playing Mario Strikers.
People are buying Wiis because it's the console that they can play with all of their friends and family. That's why Wii Sports was such a big deal(even though to me Wii Sports was more like a demo than a game). The games that will get people playing their Wiis and keep them playing are the games like Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Mario & Sonic, ect. I realise that it seems like it's taking forever for those games to come out, but it's not like Wii is the first console to not have a shit load of games in its first year. When those games come out, a lot more people will be playing their Wiis.
Brawl and Mario Kart alone will be enough to keep me happy for the next year.
Actually sounds a lot like the PS3...
A question I have is, does the study take into account how many people are playing the Wii solo or with friends? I've found out that if its just myself picking up a console to play I go for my PS3 rather than the Wii. But when I have friends over we almost always play the Wii. And with good games for the PS3 coming up, more that I'm interested in than the Wii anyway, I'll probably still be playing my PS3 more.
Now we just need 3rd party developers to start producing the good stuff too, No More Heroes looks good, Zack & Wii from Capcom looks awesome.
Unless we are talking about Dreamcast then every console takes a while to get going. The cool thing about the WIi is that any time there is a lack of Wii software you can always turn to the Virtual Console.
Are you waiting for Mario Kart on the Wii?
Check out Sin & Punishment on the Virtual Console while you wait.
Are you waiting for Super Mario Galaxy?
Well check out the Super Mario games on the Virtual Console.
Are you waiting for Wii Fit?
Go pump some iron at your local gym.
God, that sounded dirty.
Don't buy a Wii and then complain about the lack of single player titles coming out every month. That's like eating at a Chinese restaurant and complaining that they don't sell tacos. If you want tacos, you eat at a Mexican restaurant.
2) I also love how people think that Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros.: Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are going to make people realize that the system was hand-crafted by God Himself and handed to Iwata from on high. Get over yourselves.
I like my Wii, it's great, but I know there are other options out there. In the end, I just wanna play great games, and the Wii accomplishes that for me the same way an Xbox 360 would.
Y'know Jim, I really like you. At the very least, you try not to put an eternally negative spin on things.
I think you'll see a lot of people buying a PS3/360 as their main console, and buying a Wii to play when all of their friends come over. I don't really see anything wrong with that.
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2? Why? If I wanted a good WWII experience (which I don't and neither does anyone else) I'd just play Call of Duty 2.
And you can add me to that statistic because there is nothing on the Wii that I care about. After all those AAA titles for my 360 and some Live arcade games that I've downloaded...Nintendo what?
They only have their first party Nintendo mascots. 3rd party is a mess of tacked on crappy motion control.
Aside from that, I haven't played the Wii in a couple of months, since I beat Super Paper Mario, but I also have a DS, PSP, 360 and PS2. Between all of those I have plenty of games to tide me over until the next great Wii game comes out. I don't know about you guys but I don't have time to play through everything so quickly that I need a new game every week. I'm no longer a kid living with my parents anymore.
That being said, I wouldn't say there is a system I play the most, it just happens to be whatever game I'm playing at the moment. I haven't touched my PS2 or DS in months either. Does that mean they're "teh d00med?"
As long as I have as long of a backlog as I do, I don't think I will ever complain about a system of mine not getting enough play time (except for the PSP. The poor thing).
