Nintendo hints at 'fun surprise coming soon' (Update) photo

Here's one we almost missed into today's Wii Shop Update -- Nintendo is hinting at a "fun surprise coming soon." I don't do this often, but since my brain can't function fast enough to piece together this information, here's a copy/paste from the press release:

In other news, the Wii-kly Update has a fun surprise coming soon for all our fans. We can't tell you the secret just yet but maybe we’ll offer you some hidden clues. From AZ to NC, if you’re a fan, your applause could rattle your walls, windows, door. You might enjoy this news whether you live in a brick house or Vanderbilt dorm. Even people living along Route 286 in rural Pennsylvania ought to be excited. It’ll feel like a bunch of birthday greetings and, really, who could ask for more? But that's about all we can say for now, so be sure to check future Wii-kly Updates.

Based on those clues, what could Nintendo possibly be talking about? Is this a new WiiWare game based on an IP we should all be excited about? Will an oldie-but-goodie we've all been waiting for finally make its way to the Virtual Console? Or will we be met with crushing disappointment?

Start speculating in the comments below, Sherlock.

[Update: The dots have been connected, and all signs seem to point to Commodore 64 games coming to the Virtual Console. Yay? Hmmm ... check out the interesting evidence in the comments. Thanks, guys!]

Brick House is a song by the Commodores, Commodore is a city in Pennsylvania.

It could very well be Commodore 64 games.

It is a new mario game that is taking place in a real world with open gameplay. Tons of fun to be had! Mario starts out as a lowly mushroom dealer in Italy and has to work his way up to be the kingpin.

Commodore was based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia.

Another clue they could have used. QVC currently occupies the old Commodore building.

Vanderbilt University's sports teams are the "Commodores".

Commodore games are currently available to Wii owners in Europe, not the U.S. This announcement is clearly meant for us old farts in the U.S. who were gaming on the C64 when many Dtoid-ers were still itches in their daddy's pants. ;)

It is pretty funny that wii owners are more excited about C64 games coming then the actual games being made just for wii.

As long as good C64 games finally make it over to the VC (LucasArts SCUMM games, classic EA games like Archon and Mail Order Monsters, etc) then this is pretty exciting news.

Thus far though, only 18 C64 games have been released in Europe, and not many of them have been too good.

Bite your tongue, mister!

I can't wait for MadWorld, Fatal Frame, and a number of other Wii titles that are due out this year. But never underestimate the enjoying power of nostalgia.

Now, we need someone to come up with a way to attach the old C64/Atari 2600 joysticks to the Wii... :)

@atastysammich:

Only when Nintendo can come up with a way to give us those Virtual Boy games in 3D without giving us brain-splitting headaches and bleeding eyes will your statement cause any sadness.

@Jonathan:

Let's not forget games like

- Jump Man
- Castle Wolfenstein/Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
- Space Taxi
- Beach Head
- Airborne Ranger
- Arctic Fox
- Ways of the Exploding Fist
- International Karate
- [Summer|Winter] Games
- ... basically ANYTHING from Epyx
- Temple of Apshai trilogy
- Racing Destruction Set

... the list goes on and on. So many C64 games wasted thousands of my teenage hours, and I loved every bit of it.

Heh. Back in the day when Activision, EA, and Epyx ruled the gaming world with GOOD games...

Can't they just ship people pairs of 3D glasses? And then find some way to implement everything differently, blah blah blah.

@Johnny Justice:

I never had an Amiga, but that was one hell of a system! Good luck getting Amiga games on the Wii, especially because Amiga (with the same logo) is still an active company. They even use the famous checkered ball.
